The stench hit my nostrils before the man even crossed the threshold. It rolled into the room in a thick, suffocating cloud—stale sweat, wet earth, and the foul, copper tang of dried blood.

I pressed my cheek against the carpet, gagging as my stomach heaved against the burning wine.

A heavy frame ducked through the doorframe. Hair matted with grease and dried mud hung in filthy strands over his brow, almost hiding a thick white scar that cut through his left eyebrow. His beard was patchy and caked with grime, framing a split lip that exposed yellowed, decaying teeth. Torn, stained leather draped over broad, hunching shoulders, and mud-encrusted boots left wet streaks across the hotel carpet.

"Don't bolt the lock," Victoria’s voice echoed from the hallway outside before her heels retreated down the corridor. "Leave the latch free so the elders can walk straight in at midnight."

"Got it, miss," the man grunted, his voice sounding like two grinding stones. He let the door click shut behind him without throwing the heavy deadbolt.

His bloodshot eyes swept over me, lingering on the way my shirt sat tangled around my shoulders and the feverish flush painting my skin.

"Soft," he muttered, his lips pulling back into an ugly grin. "Tristan paid well for this."

Hearing my fiancé’s name from a filthy vagrant’s lips broke something deep inside my chest. A dry sob tore from my throat, but no sound came out—only a ragged rasp.

They picked him on purpose, my mind screamed, panic clawing at my throat as my vision blurred. The dirtiest, most frightening thing they could find in the dark. Tristan sat across from me at dinner yesterday. He looked me in the eye... and he set this up.

"You brought a rogue?" I croaked out, my hands scraping against the carpet as I tried to drag myself backward. "Tristan... Tristan agreed to this?"

"Agreed?" The rogue—Dorn—cracked his knuckles, the dark dirt caked deep under his thick fingernails. "He paid for half of me, girl. Said he wanted to make sure there wasn't a single soul in Shadow Glint Pack who would take your side when this gets out."

He took a slow step forward. "He told me to leave my mark deep on your shoulder. Said the elders need to see rogue blood on you."

My pupils dilated in sheer terror. A traitor's mark. If a rogue marks me, pack law dictates immediate exile or execution. They aren't just stripping my dignity—they are signing my death warrant.

"I've never been so disappointed her wolf is asleep," Victoria’s parting scoff echoed in my memory. The wolf I never had. I've been ashamed of my silent wolf for years. And now they're using it to destroy me.

"Don't come near me," I forced out, my voice trembling as my hand blindly scraped backward against the low wooden nightstand runner, my fingers frantically searching for anything to anchor myself against the heavy haze of the drug.

"Don't be scared, pretty thing," Dorn said, taking another heavy step forward. "I'll give you a real good time."

My breathing came in fast, shallow gasps. I remember the maids whispering at the Manor... when we were cleaning the back halls. They said rogue males fight over anything they can catch. They said when a rogue gets a female alone, they are rough. They release everything at once.

What does 'rough' mean when it's him? No. No, I won't let him touch me.

My shaking fingers hit something cold, smooth, and extraordinarily heavy resting on the corner of the wooden table. I didn't look at it. I didn't dare pull my eyes off his face.

Dorn took his final step, his massive shadow stretching long across the floorboards, completely blocking out the overhead light. He reached out his filthy hand, his black-caked nails clawing toward the neck of my shirt.

Now!

A sudden, blinding spike of pure defiance surged through the thick haze of the drug. I didn't hesitate. I didn't give him time to react.

My fingers locked around the heavy base of whatever object lay on the table. With the absolute last reserve of strength left in my poisoned body, I screamed—a raw, guttural sound of pure defiance—shoving myself upward and swinging the heavy object with everything I had straight at his face.

"What the—" Dorn started, his bloodshot eyes widening in shock.

The heavy, solid base connected straight against the side of his skull with a sickening, shattering CRACK.

I pressed my back flat against the cold, damp wallpaper of the service corridor, my right hand planted firmly against the dark wood paneling to steady my shaking legs.Heavy boot steps and the sharp, static crackle of a guard's radio rounded the far corner of the subterranean passage. I stopped breathing entirely, locking my lungs.Don't move. Don't be big. Just blend into the wall.I hated that the humiliating thought even existed in my mind, but years of deep muscle memory under Victor's roof took over instantly. I pulled my arms tight over my stomach, trying desperately to make my heavy, plus-sized frame as small and invisible as humanly possible in the narrow, shadowed hallway."Keep walking," I whispered fiercely to the dark floorboards beneath my feet. "Please, just keep walking past me.""Nothing on four," a guard muttered into his handheld radio, his dull voice heavy with boredom as his heavy boots clicked past my hiding spot without a sideways glance. "Tristan can look for th

"We... we didn't know it was you, My Lord," the first guard stammered out, his rough voice cracking violently mid-sentence as the sheer, suffocating weight of the man's primal growl crushed down upon him. His eyes were blown wide with pure, unadulterated panic, locked entirely onto the tattooed black wolf and crowned crest stretched across the broad, powerful back right in front of him. "Forgive us! We had no idea you were quartered in this suite!""Wrong room! Completely wrong room!" the second guard squeaked out in sheer terror, stumbling backward into the corridor so fast his heavy boots caught on the wooden doorframe, nearly throwing him flat on his back in his frantic haste to escape the terrifying presence towering over them. They practically scrambled over one another to grab the handle and pull the heavy oak door shut, the latch catching with a sharp, desperate click that echoed loudly through the quiet suite like a gunshot.I stood completely frozen in the stranger's firm arm

Aurora's POV.... "Search by order of Alpha Tristan!" a harsh, grating voice barked from the corridor outside, followed by two heavy, authoritative thumps against the wooden door that rattled my teeth. "Every single room on this wing!" I whipped my head around toward the tall, dark man standing over me in the shadows. His face was completely blank, an impenetrable wall of cold, unfeeling marble. His striking icy blue eyes were steady, sharp, and utterly detached. He didn't flinch at the loud noise echoing through the suite. He didn't even bother to turn his head toward the door to acknowledge the threat. "Open up for inspection, please!" the guard demanded from the hallway, his tone threatening. "I offered," I whispered, my trembling voice breaking as raw terror clawed frantically at the back of my throat. "You said... please." He said absolutely nothing in response. He didn't even offer me a passing glance to reassure me. My fingers twisted tightly into the damp hem of his white

I turned around slowly, every movement deliberate and measured as I finally faced her in the dim light of the suite. She was standing right there in the pale moonlight filtering through the window, framed entirely in my oversized white shirt, shaking so violently that her knees knocked together beneath the wet linen. Her hazelnut eyes were wide, completely drowned in pure, unadulterated fear as she stared up at me, waiting for the axe to fall."Do you know who I am?" I asked, my voice dropping into a low, dangerous rasp that filled the quiet room and vibrated in the air between us."No," she breathed out, her pale lips trembling as she held my gaze despite her terror."Are you so utterly desperate that you'd throw yourself at the mercy of a complete stranger you found hiding in the dark?"Now she'll cower, I thought, watching her intensely for the inevitable sign of weak submission that every desperate she-wolf displayed when cornered. They always break under pressure. She hesitated,

Valen's POV....... "Every room on this floor!" Alpha Tristan’s voice barked through the heavy wood of my suite door, sharp and impatient. "She can't have gone far, not in that state." I stood frozen in the bathroom doorway, my jaw set, my palm pressed flat against the doorframe. The small fruit knife sat motionless on the marble counter behind me. The girl was behind me, shivering violently, her wet dress dripping onto the tile. "Sir, this floor's been cleared once," a guard muffled from the hallway. "Clear it again," Tristan snapped. Not in that state. The words lingered in the quiet room like smoke. Someone had drugged her. They hadn't just tried to take her; they had set a trap. Whoever it was, it was a man who wanted her shamed, exposed, and stripped of whatever little dignity she had left. Stay away from her, I told myself, tightening my grip on the doorframe until the wood groaned. Whatever this mess is, it isn't yours. A quiet rustle came from the marble room behind me.

Valen's POV……The splash echoed off the marble walls, cold water soaking my sleeve to the elbow. In my right hand, the thin cut across my palm stung like fire. I had squeezed the hidden fruit knife until the steel bit deep into my own flesh, using the sharp, biting pain to force my wolf down. I stared down at the drenched, shivering girl gasping in the tub, my expression cold and unreadable.Four minutes earlier."Alpha. Have you eaten? Slept?" Marcus’s voice came through the line, protective and steady."Marcus," I said, pacing the dark floorboards of the suite."Did you find anything in the lower hall?" Marcus asked. "Any proof of the coup?""No," I replied, staring out the window toward Victor's territory. "I..."A faint scrape sounded outside my door—a shoe dragging against the carpet."Marcus, I'll call you back.""Watch your back, Alpha," Marcus warned before hanging up.I shoved the phone into my pocket, my eyes tracking the brass handle as it slowly turned downward.Only an ho
