Aurora’s POV……..

The glass bottle neck bit hard into my lower lip, tasting of sweet, bitter copper and cloying red wine.

"Drink it, bastard!" Victoria snarled.

Her knee slammed brutally into my hip, her full weight pinning me flat against the hotel mattress.

I choked. The dark liquid sprayed across my chin and collar, burning down my windpipe. I thrashed, my heels kicking uselessly against the duvet, but my wolf lay dead inside me—silent, dormant, useless. My heavy body felt like lead under the drug’s swift onset.

Victoria dragged my head back by my hair, forcing my face toward the glowing screen of her phone resting on the wooden nightstand.

A photo lit up the dark room.

My breath locked in my throat.

It was Tristan—my fiancé—sprawled half-naked across silk sheets. A text message sat right beneath his face, sent ten minutes ago: Is the pig asleep yet? Hurry back to my bed, Luna.

My throat seized shut. My vision blurred as cold air rushed into my lungs without making a sound.

Tristan. The man who had held my hand at dinner six months ago. The man who had looked me in the eye and swore protection under the sacred blood oath.

"See that?" Victoria whispered right against my ear, her breath hot and reeking of mint. "Six months, Aurora. Six months he’s been touching me while you sat downstairs waiting for him to call you pretty."

My hands went limp on her wrist. My fingers slid off her skin, dropping onto the sheets like dead weight.

"Why?" I croaked out. My lower lip trembled so violently my teeth clicked together. "The... the blood oath..."

"He despises you," Victoria sneered, her fingers digging deeper into my jaw until bone ground against bone. "He hates every inch of your useless, fat body. But he couldn't break the oath without looking like an unjust Alpha to the pack elders. So he needed a scandal. A reason to throw you out like trash."

She snatched her phone off the table and stood up, smoothing down her fitted silk dress without a single drop of wine on her own clothes.

"By midnight, Tristan will bring the Elder Council right through that door," Victoria said, tossing the empty wine bottle onto the carpet with a dull thud. "They’re going to find you disgraced in this bed. The oath breaks automatically under treason, and I take my place as Luna of Shadow Glint Pack."

A violent, unnatural heat suddenly erupted deep in my belly, rushing straight through my bloodstream like boiling oil.

My skin flushed deep crimson. My fingers twitched uncontrollably against the duvet, pulling at my collar as my chest heaved for air. I tried to drag my heavy legs over the edge of the mattress, but my knees buckled completely. I hit the carpet hard, shivering violently as the heat coiled tight in my abdomen.

"What..." I gasped, my throat dry as sand. "What was in... that wine?"

"Just a little aphrodisiac to make sure you put on a proper show for the man coming through the door," Victoria sneered, stepping right over my shaking hand. "Can't have you fighting back when the witnesses arrive."

"You... you monster," I gritted out, my nails digging into the carpet fibers as I tried to pull myself toward the bathroom door.

"Look at you," Victoria scoffed, taking two steps back toward the small entryway. "Dragging yourself on the floor like the dog you are. Right on schedule."

"Please," I whispered, my vision swimming with dark spots as my skin flushed crimson. "Victoria, don't do this to me. I'll leave. I'll leave Shadow Glint Pack. I'll never come back."

"You think I'd let you leave alive to tell your pathetic story?" Victoria spat. "You're staying right here until Tristan walks in with the elder council to catch you."

I squeezed my eyes shut, pulling my knees up to my chest as the heat tore through my muscles. Father... did Father know about this? Did he let them treat me like this all these years? No. He couldn't. He wouldn't.

"Is Father..." I choked out, swallowing hard against my dry, burning throat. "Does Father know?"

"Father gave Tristan the keycard," Victoria said smoothly, checking her reflection in the wall mirror with a smirk. "Did you really think anyone in that house actually cared about you? You were just an annoying mouth to feed until we found a way to use you."

The final illusion shattered inside my chest, leaving a cold, hollow void. No one is coming. No one was ever coming to save me.

Footsteps echoed down the corridor outside—heavy, dragging, and irregular.

Victoria checked the door lock, ensuring the handle was closed, but explicitly leaving the deadbolt unlatched from the inside so Tristan and the Elders could burst in unannounced later.

She turned toward the opening door, a cruel, triumphant smile spreading across her face.

"Enjoy your guest, sister," Victoria whispered, stepping out into the hall as the door handle turned downward.

"Come in," she said.

  • ECHOES OF THE MASKED DAWN    CHAPTER 13: HEAD HIGH

I am back on my feet, pacing the narrow length of my basement room—three steps and turn, three steps and turn. The thin white gown is crushed tight in one of my trembling fists, and the metallic echo of the iron gate bell is still ringing violently inside my skull like a striking anvil. Every strike of that bell feels like a slow, deliberate countdown to my own execution, rattling through the damp floorboards and vibrating up through the cold soles of my bare feet."He won't let me out of his sight," I whisper to the empty, shadow-draped walls, my mind racing in frantic, exhausted circles. Not to the town school. Not to the local market. Not even past the wrought-iron outer gates of the estate grounds. He stands by the window and watches the front entrance like a hawk the moment he returns home from pack council business. And yet Vivian can roam the territory as she pleases... and Victoria can do whatever twisted thing she wishes without a single word of reprimand or correction. "Beca

A soft knock raps against the wood, so quiet and restrained it could easily be a trick of the draft. My head jerks up from the edge of the bed. I cross the small room in three silent strides, yank the curtain aside with a desperate hand, and confirm the thin, accusing rays of morning light slanting across the courtyard. Then the voice cuts through the door panels, flat and devoid of warmth:"Miss Aurora. Open the door."It sounds like an absolute command, not a request."Who is it?" I whisper back, my throat tight."Open it," the voice insists.I hesitate, my heart hammering against my ribs. I smooth my hair down frantically with both trembling hands, double-check that the white shirt is buried safely beneath the mattress, and straighten my spine as much as I am able before turning the iron handle.I pull the door open to reveal Greta, Lady Victoria’s personal maid. She stands in the dim corridor with her hair a brilliant, immaculate red, her uniform pristine and unwrinkled. She looks

  • ECHOES OF THE MASKED DAWN    CHAPTER 11: THE LONGEST HOURS

I laid on my back on the narrow mattress, staring up at the stained ceiling tiles while my eyes burn from sheer exhaustion. A faint, dry scratch comes from somewhere above my head, rattling through the lath and plaster. I sit bolt upright, my muscles tensing for a fight. It is only a rat, or the metal of the old gravity pipes expanding in the damp basement chill. I lie back down, and my hand flies automatically to my throat, pressing flat against the pulse there.Still dark. Still dark.I turn onto my right side, the thin wool blanket scratching against my bare skin. The silence in the basement is absolute, heavy and suffocating. I turn back onto my left side, then onto my stomach, burying my face in the lumpy pillow before giving up entirely with a soft, frustrated sigh. I press the heel of my hand hard to my chest, then over my mouth to muffle my shallow breathing. My fingers drift to the edge of the cheap cotton blanket, picking mindlessly at the fraying hem until a long, grey thre

I pressed my back flat against the cold, damp wallpaper of the service corridor, my right hand planted firmly against the dark wood paneling to steady my shaking legs.Heavy boot steps and the sharp, static crackle of a guard's radio rounded the far corner of the subterranean passage. I stopped breathing entirely, locking my lungs.Don't move. Don't be big. Just blend into the wall.I hated that the humiliating thought even existed in my mind, but years of deep muscle memory under Victor's roof took over instantly. I pulled my arms tight over my stomach, trying desperately to make my heavy, plus-sized frame as small and invisible as humanly possible in the narrow, shadowed hallway."Keep walking," I whispered fiercely to the dark floorboards beneath my feet. "Please, just keep walking past me.""Nothing on four," a guard muttered into his handheld radio, his dull voice heavy with boredom as his heavy boots clicked past my hiding spot without a sideways glance. "Tristan can look for th

  • ECHOES OF THE MASKED DAWN    CHAPTER 9: THE GUARDS' TERROR

"We... we didn't know it was you, My Lord," the first guard stammered out, his rough voice cracking violently mid-sentence as the sheer, suffocating weight of the man's primal growl crushed down upon him. His eyes were blown wide with pure, unadulterated panic, locked entirely onto the tattooed black wolf and crowned crest stretched across the broad, powerful back right in front of him. "Forgive us! We had no idea you were quartered in this suite!""Wrong room! Completely wrong room!" the second guard squeaked out in sheer terror, stumbling backward into the corridor so fast his heavy boots caught on the wooden doorframe, nearly throwing him flat on his back in his frantic haste to escape the terrifying presence towering over them. They practically scrambled over one another to grab the handle and pull the heavy oak door shut, the latch catching with a sharp, desperate click that echoed loudly through the quiet suite like a gunshot.I stood completely frozen in the stranger's firm arm

  • ECHOES OF THE MASKED DAWN    CHAPTER 8: THE KING'S MARK

Aurora's POV.... "Search by order of Alpha Tristan!" a harsh, grating voice barked from the corridor outside, followed by two heavy, authoritative thumps against the wooden door that rattled my teeth. "Every single room on this wing!" I whipped my head around toward the tall, dark man standing over me in the shadows. His face was completely blank, an impenetrable wall of cold, unfeeling marble. His striking icy blue eyes were steady, sharp, and utterly detached. He didn't flinch at the loud noise echoing through the suite. He didn't even bother to turn his head toward the door to acknowledge the threat. "Open up for inspection, please!" the guard demanded from the hallway, his tone threatening. "I offered," I whispered, my trembling voice breaking as raw terror clawed frantically at the back of my throat. "You said... please." He said absolutely nothing in response. He didn't even offer me a passing glance to reassure me. My fingers twisted tightly into the damp hem of his white
