CHAPTER 12

ROB’S POV

All I could think about all day was Isabelle.

The way she laughed and clunged onto me got me excited to go home early.

She had been home all day and I’m sure she was probably bored to hell.

I walked into the cafe hoping to pick up Jenna and leave.

She was sitting with someone else, not like I cared but she’d told me she was shopping alone.

I increased my pace just to freeze in my tracks.

Was I hallucinating? My tie suddenly felt too tight I could barely swallow.

“Rob?” She called out my name in disbelief.

Her disappointed face made me weak in the knees.

She would never believe me now.

Jenna asked if we knew each other as she glanced back and forth between us.

Of course I knew her. It just happened to be bad timing that I bumped into my girlfriend having a latte with my supposed bride.

I’m Fucked.

“Yes,” I cut in fast. Too fast. “We—we went to high school together.” It’s been years” I faked a smile.

I’ve gone too fa

CHAPTER 28 ROB’S POV It’s been a day now I haven't been to the house. Given what happened I thought I’d give Jenna a little space. Which was why I decided to check on her today. The moment I stepped into the house, I knew something was wrong. “Jenna?” I called out loudly , as I walked past the living room. There was no answer. The thought of something possibly happening to her gripped my mind with fear. Hurriedly, I jolted to her bedroom, but her door was wide open. She never forgets to shut the doors. I walked in and that was when I saw it. Her drawers were half open and from the looks, they were empty. Hangers were thrown across the room in a crazed manner. A peek into the bathroom and the counter was cleared out. That's when it hit me—she was gone. My chest tightened. “Jenna?” I called out again, this time hoping some miracle would happen. Still nothing. How could she leave? There was no note, or a message. Rage swelled up within

CHAPTER 27 ISABELLE’S POV I stood by the window of my apartment, staring blankly into the glass in my hand. The thoughts in my head couldn’t compare to how much I was in rage. Rob didn’t pay as much attention to me anymore and it was all Jenna’s fault. All he thought about now was saving his marriage? Why would he suddenly own up to a marriage he detested? I clenched onto the glass tighter. I have no other option than to show him what happens when he pushes me too far. I picked up my phone. “Hi, Elijah. It’s Isabelle.” “Pardon, but do I know you?” The uncertainty in his voice was loud. “You don’t, but I do and that’s what’s important.” I continued. “I’d like to discuss something important with you—in private.” He gasped in a low tone, just enough for me to hear it. “What is it about?” “Oh, c’mon darling. Disclosing that over the phone wouldn’t be as fun as saying it to your face.” There was a long silence between us. It was expected for him to be

CHAPTER 26 ROB’S POV I’d left for the office the moment I served Jenna her breakfast. I knew that wasn’t enough, but that should atleast keep her at bay before I get back. I stood at the edge of the window, staring at cars zoom by, a phone pressed to my ear. “Hello.” The investigator’s voice came through. I’d hired a private investigator after the incident with Elijah. He was too much of a competition to just let roam around and destroy my marriage silently. I had to bring him down. “We’ve got something. It’s not solid yet, but it gives us a head start.” He continued. My pupils dilated right after he landed those few words. “What did you find?” “Rumors of abuse on his ex-wife—mostly physical, maybe emotional. There was no police report on it, and all we found was a sealed agreement right after the divorce. We think he paid her for her silence.” My fingers curled into a fist. This wasn’t enough. “I need solid proof, not rumors.” I muttered. “Cu

CHAPTER 25 JENNA’S POV I had stayed up all night thinking about what had happened. I was so angry at Rob, I’d planned to leave the house temporarily. When I woke up, I hadn’t expected anything else than the usual silence I always found my self in. But then, the continual clanking of ceramics caused my eyes to jolt open fully, while my nose traced the scent of coffee to where Rob stood. Rob? What was he doing here? He was standing by the doorway, with a tray on his hand and an apron tied to his neck. “Breakfast for the lady” he said, as he walked up to set it down on the small table beside me. Does he think this would make me forget about last night? Hmph. I scoffed at the back of my mind. “You didn’t have to.” I said, flatly, as I eyed the plate of eggs and pancakes. My stomach rumbled in hunger immediately. Damn! A smile formed on his lips. “But your stomach says otherwise” One part of me found this gesture thoughtful, but the other felt it was j

CHAPTER 24 JENNA’S POV Soft classical music blended seamlessly with the low murmur of conversations just as I stepped into the art gallery. Beautiful paintings hung in a line along the white painted walls which contrasted elegantly with the environment, The air lingered with fresh paint, and what smelt like a hint of roses. I turned scanning the room, my eyes darting between sculptures and different paintings until they landed on him. Elijah. He had invited me over the phone, it was a late invite, but after much pondering I decided to go. He currently stood in the middle of the gallery with a glass of champagne in one hand, while he talked to some people dressed in elegant suits and dresses. He hadn’t noticed me yet. He seemed to be guiding them. They moved from one canvas to the other, quietly murmuring as they stared. Rob stood by me, a grim look plastered on his face. He adamantly insisted on following me, when I informed him of the invite from E

CHAPTER 23 JENNA’S POV I walked into the house still deep in thought as I nearly acknowledged Rob when I passed him in the hallway. “ Can we talk?” His voice, low and soft. I said nothing, walking past him. He followed me to the room. “Jenna, please. You’ve been cold since we got back from the trip” his tone laced with desperation. “Look we can work this out—“ “Stop” I cut in. “Let’s stop pretending this marriage will blossom with time. Whatever this was…..it’s not working.” “If you just listen to me, we can save this before it even fails.” He pushed. I shook my head slowly. “No, Rob. Whatever it is you’re trying to do,Just give it up.” I turned, finally facing him. “I’m sick of you trying to please my grandfather.” He stood there stunned. ROB’S POV The way she looked at me— it was anger. Her mind was made up. But I couldn’t let it happen. I couldn’t lose her now. How long had she been thinking about this? This is bad. She wouldn’t even listen
