CHAPTER 41 JENNA’S POV My head throbbed before my eyes opened. The air was thick with something far from the scent of a hospital room—it was musty. I rubbed my eyes in circles as I tried to adjust to the dark room. I looked around, no windows. A dim light flickered above me, it was more or less useless at it barely shone bright enough to even see around the room. When I tried to get up, the pounding in my head doubled, so I retreated back to my previous position. “Hello? Is anyone there?” I blurted loudly, using my hand as a guide around the dark room. Silence. I continued to yell until my voice gave out, my throat became patched. I had to reserve the little energy I had so I kept quiet. I curled myself into the corner, shaking from cold and hunger. After waiting for what felt like a few hours, I began to drift into sleep from exhaustion. And then. Two clicks. I jumped up, startled as I turned to see where the clicks came from. Beneath the shad
CHAPTER 40ROB’S POVI sat at the corner of the lodge waiting for when it would be time for visiting hours. After what had happened the previous day, I knew I had to be here always. ‘Rob’ I could still remember the way she called out my name, and the sense of recognition that lingered in her eyes. She was beginning to remember, yet what I didn’t understand was how her condition worsened. Was that a bad sign? Or had I walked into her at a bad hour. I couldn’t get answers except to see her again, no matter how long it took. My feet tapped continuously against the floor as I glanced up to check the huge clock hanging at the reception. Just a few more minutes, until I get to see you, Jenna. It was finally time and I walked towards the nurses station to check into the visitors book. The hallways were quiet as usual. The only footsteps that resounded were that of mine and the nurse in charge of Jenna’s ward. “How’s my wife doing?” I asked the nurse. “She’s fine sir, but I advise
CHAPTER 39JENNA’S POVMy eyes lids fluttered, heavy like they’d been stitched for days. The rhythmic beeping of the monitors kicked in my sense of awareness. I was still at the hospital. Just as I shifted my body to sit up right, I caught a blur of a shadow slid through the doors before it shut closed. Probably a nurse or a janitor. My eyes drifted around the room, taking in objects I’d become familiar with until they landed on something else. A photo frame. I turned my body, ignoring the light growing ache in my back and reached for it. My fingers curled around the wooden edges, lifting it up slowly. Two people smiled back at me. Standing in the photo was me and a man whom I thought looked familiar. “Oh good! You’re awake.”I flinched on hearing the voice, but when I looked up, the voice came from the doctor who’d just walked in, a soft smile plastered on his face and a clipboard in hand. “How are you feeling?” He asked, dragging a seat closer to my bed side. “I really d
CHAPTER 38 ISABELLE’S POV It’s been a whole week now since Rob had walked out of my apartment. No calls, no text, just silence. That one week felt maddening. All I could only think about was having Rob back into my arms again. But time—it was of the essence. I need not rush things at this vulnerable point in time. Jenna herself hadn't gotten better, rather she got worse with every dose I administered. I tucked away a few strands of hair that hung out from the edge of my nurses cap and pulled the mask higher over my face. It was evening now and I walked past the nurses station, wheeling across a cart of medications, which only made my role seem realistic. After visiting hours most nurses on duty never bothered to check the patients rooms after they’ve administered their doses for the day and luckily I knew the schedules by heart already. I knew the exact time and hour a nurse was supposed to come in and go out, else I’d be in a greater trouble if I ever got
CHAPTER 37 ISABELLE’S POV I stood by the edge of the window, phone still in my hand, while my heart leaped for joy. Rob had agreed to come over. A small grin formed on my lips. He was finally coming back to me. Everything now was falling back into place, just like I’d imagined. My fingers traced the frame of the glass absentmindedly as my mind drifted back to that night. The way Rob called her the mother of his unborn child. It rang in my ears like a slap. He got her pregnant and he didn’t deem it important to inform me, not even after I’d called him out. Everything faded to a blur until I saw her. The image of her and Rob together with a child pricked me dearly and before I even had time to think, instinct kicked in. I followed behind her quietly, unnoticed. There was no exact plan, just me following my body like a puppet. By the time she’d reached the top stairs, she paused. She noticed someone was behind, I didn’t think, my arm instantly reached
CHAPTER 36ROB’S POV The doctor stepped out from Jenna’s room some minutes after I stepped out. “What happened to my wife?” I questioned, not bothering to peer up at him. “She seems to have suffered temporary memory loss, which is mostly common with the severity of that kind of fall.”“And how long is that supposed to last?”“It varies, could be a few days to some weeks, but faster recovery is dependent on the patient. In the meantime, it’s best to take some time away from her, giving her reaction towards you.”“What do you mean I should stay away from my wife?” I stood up in rage.He sighed. “I understand, but that’s the best option right now—for both her and the baby’s safety.”Filled with rage, I walked away. I didn’t stop until I reached the car, yanked the door open and slammed it shut behind me. I pulled out my phone and dialed into it. “I need you to fill me in how’s she’s doing while I’m gone” I ordered coldly. “And she shouldn’t leave your sight! Not even for a second.”
