You are a nobody

                                                                Eagles quarters

None of them had memories, they were one, and their whole life was based on killing. Their eyes were empty, devoid of feelings, cold. They had no family, no friends, they didn’t know what love was – they had never experienced it. They were told they were special, one of a kind. They were like machines, marionettes obeying orders. They never hesitated, taking the lives of others. They had no right to make their own decisions.

“Who are you?”  asked a tall man dressed in a doctor’s smock.

“Nobody,” replied the young man standing in front of him without thinking.

The boy’s voice was devoid of emotion, completely indifferent. He stared with empty eyes somewhere in front of him in stillness. Both of his hands were lowered along his torso and hips with his elbows slightly bent, his palms touching the seam line of his pants. His feet were delivered one against the other, and the tips of his shoes were spread apart. Knees tightly joined together, and all muscles tightly tensed. He knew well how he was supposed to behave in their company. He knew his place.

“What’s your name?”   The doctor’s rough voice rang in his ears again.

The doctor intertwined the fingers of his bony hands behind his back and came even closer to the boy. The corner of his narrow mouth lifted slightly.

“One,” the young man replied, still standing at attention and looking ahead.

The Eagles' organization has been involved in training exceptional people for years. Any child with special abilities was brought to Headquarters, underwent a series of merciless examinations, after which they were returned to the laboratory and stripped of their memories. They were divided into groups, depending on their talents. Children who were a little luckier were placed in the First Section, but the rest wandered into the Second Section. Members of the Second Section were injected with mixtures designed to dull their emotions. They were taught self-control, forced to turn off their feelings, so they could take the lives of others without blinking an eye. Each child was subjected to rigorous training that lasted from early morning until late evening. Day in and day out, until the bosses decided that the soldier was ready. Each wound was answered with one sentence: no matter how severe the pain is, it is only a product of the mind. Upon completion of training, each soldier was obedient, disciplined and ready to carry out the most difficult orders. He was able to successfully cooperate with others in the group, and was loyal and discreet. Eagle’s young soldiers developed perseverance, self-control, and resistance to stress and work in difficult, dangerous conditions. They were willing to take risky actions, even at the cost of their lives. Excellence, meticulousness and perceptiveness were required of them. They were capable of handling weapons of various types and possessed hand-to-hand combat skills. They constituted perfectly functioning killing machines.
