"Instructor Renna." Sera's voice came out barely above a whisper, disbelief and horror tangled together in equal measure. "You're the one who was in that stairwell."

Renna's face, illuminated fully now by pale moonlight through the chapel's broken roof, looked older than Sera had ever seen it, lined with something that might have been guilt, might have been exhaustion, might have been both combined into something she'd been carrying silently for far too long.

"I did not set that fire." Her

"Who's pulling it? Somebody has to be pulling it, a bell doesn't just ring itself!""Mira, keep running.""I'm running! I'm just saying it out loud so it counts!"The chapel bell tolled again, and the sound rolled across the academy grounds like a stone dropped into a very deep well. Windows were flaring yellow in every dormitory. Students in nightclothes spilled onto the lawn, clutching blankets, whispering and pointing. A first year girl stood barefoot in the grass with her hands over her ears, crying without making a sound.Sera ran past her and hated herself a little for not stopping.Faster, the ancient voice said inside her head. It was tight and urgent, stripped of every drop of humor. The hand on the rope is pulling harder. I can feel it in my teeth, Sera. I can feel it in the crown.I'm going as fast as I can! Then go faster than that.Dorian caught up with her at the gate, breathing hard, his coat torn at the shoulder from a low branch. Oren was right behind him, then Elena,

  • Ember Academy    Chapter 97: The Empty Hand

"Move, move, please, move!"They tore across the academy grounds in the moonlight, skirts and cloaks flying, scattered festival lanterns dark and ugly behind them. Dorian ran at her shoulder, Oren a step behind, Mira and Elena pelting after with their gowns hiked up to their knees. The guarded wing sat at the north end of the grounds, a squat stone building with narrow windows and a heavy oak door. A pair of summit guards were supposed to stand at it day and night.Only one was standing."Halt, who goes." The guard's words slid into mush. He swayed on his feet, blinked at them blearily, and sat down very slowly on the step with his helmet crooked."Same poison," Oren muttered, kneeling beside him. "A lighter dose. He'll wake in an hour with a headache. Go. Go on, I'll sit with him."The door was already ajar.Inside, a single oil lamp burned low in the corridor. The second guard lay slumped against the wall with his chin on his chest. A cup had spilled beside him, and the smell of som

"Stay behind me. All of you, behind me, right now."Oren's voice cracked across the orchard like a whip, and every one of them obeyed. Mira dragged Elena back by the arm. Dorian stepped in front of Sera. A little flame bloomed in his open palm, small and steady, and it lit his jaw and the hard line of his mouth.Around them the lanterns went out one by one.Not all at once. That was the worst part. They died in a slow ripple that started far down the orchard and crept closer, tree by tree, rope by rope, until the last warm glow over the cider press shrank to a thread and winked out.The fiddle had stopped. The laughter had stopped. Somewhere beyond the trees a child started to cry and was hushed.Moonlight lay over the grass, thin and silver and cold."Is that, did somebody, is that someone walking?" Mira whispered."Quiet," Oren breathed.Footsteps. Slow, uneven, dragging through the long grass. A shape came out of the dark between two apple trees, bent over, wrapped in a vendor's ap

"Elena, wait! Please!" Sera pelted between the apple trees, skirts bunched in one fist, lantern light flickering past in streaks. "I'm not angry, I swear, just stop!"She found her beside the old cider press, a rusted iron thing at the far edge of the orchard, half buried in tall grass. Elena was hunched against its side with both hands clamped around the pendant, shaking so hard her teeth chattered."Don't," Elena said hoarsely. "Don't look at it. Don't look at me.""Okay." Sera slowed, then crouched a few steps away, keeping her hands visible. "I'm not looking. Not if you don't want me to.""You felt it. Everyone felt it.""I felt something." Sera swallowed. "It's all right. You're not in trouble.""I'm always in trouble." A broken laugh. "It does this. It's done it since I was twelve. Whenever there's a strong fire nearby, it, it wakes up. At Calder, in my first fire lesson, it flared and the frost went everywhere. I wasn't even casting. I swear on my gran's grave, I wasn't even ca

"Stop wiggling, Mira, I swear I'll stab you with one of these." Elena spoke around three pins pressed between her lips, crouched at the hem of Mira's gown with the grim focus of someone defusing a bomb."I'm not wiggling. I'm, okay, I'm a little bit wiggling." Mira bounced on her toes anyway. "It's just that Oren's going to see me, and he's going to say something gruff and sweet, and I'll die. Actually die.""You won't die," Sera said from the window seat, where she was losing a private war with her own hair. "You'll go red and say 'thanks' in a squeaky voice. Like last time.""That was one time.""It was the gala, and the dance, and the walk home."Mira groaned and covered her face with both hands. Elena sat back on her heels, plucked the last pin from her mouth, and surveyed her work with narrowed eyes."There. Done. If you tear it, I'm not fixing it again.""You're a genius." Mira threw her arms around her, pins and all. "A frightening, pin wielding genius."Elena stiffened for hal

  • Ember Academy    Chapter 93: Quiet Conversations

He seems genuinely kind, the ancient presence observed quietly within Sera's consciousness later that evening, as she settled into bed, exhaustion from the day's ordinary demands finally catching up with her. The new boy, I mean. Theo. You're paying attention to my social life now, Sera thought back, something wry coloring the observation despite her surprise at the presence's unprompted commentary.I have little else to occupy myself with, bound here as I am, the voice replied, something almost like dry humor carrying through the ancient weariness. Forgive me if ordinary teenage drama proves considerably more entertaining than centuries of silent imprisonment did.Sera found herself smiling despite the strangeness of the exchange. Is that what this is for you. Entertainment.Among other things, the voice said, more serious now. I confess, Sera, these weeks of quiet coexistence have proven considerably more bearable than I expected, watching your life unfold from this strange, intimat
