Amelia

The subway always smelled like sweat and regret — but at six in the morning, medyo kaya pang tiisin. The doors creaked open, and a rush of stale air brushed past me. My coffee was lukewarm, my eyes burned from another sleepless night, and I was clutching a folder full of legal notes I couldn’t afford to forget.

Top of my class, full of dreams — I swore one day I’d be a lawyer. My name on shiny office doors, my voice echoing in a courtroom, commanding respect. Pero isang taon matapos ‘yun, ayan ako — twenty-one, paralegal lang, drowning in utang and hospital bills, fighting to stay afloat between two jobs na parang walang pake kung mabuhay man ako o hindi.

Pero give up? Hindi pwede.

My mom needed her meds. My brother needed a future. And I needed to keep that promise I once whispered sa basag naming salamin sa banyo: I’ll make it. No matter how ugly the road is, I’ll make it.

The subway screeched into Midtown. The men in crisp suits walked past me, cufflinks shining like tiny insults. I straightened my secondhand blazer, praying na ‘di halata ang maliit na punit sa cuff.

At my desk, I buried myself in contracts, scanning for loopholes like my life depended on it—kasi totoo, oo, nakasalalay talaga doon ang buhay ko. No one thanked me for saving them from million-dollar mistakes. Pero ako, alam ko. And sometimes, I’d imagine — maybe someday, someone important will finally see me.

By lunch, my stomach was practically begging. Habang ‘yung iba nagkukwentuhan over their ₱600 salads, ako lumabas ng building, bumili ng pinakamurang sandwich sa food cart, and ate it while staring up at the skyscrapers. Power looked so effortless from the outside — all glass, all steel, all control.

I wanted that. Not the money, not the glamor — but the freedom. ‘Yung hinga na hindi mo kailangang kwentahin kung magkano.

And I’d get there. Kahit gumapang ako, kahit masugatan, I’d get there.

That night, nasa Queens na naman ako. Apron on, smile plastered, habang naglilingkod ng pasta at cheap wine. “Another glass of Chianti, sir?” I said with a voice that didn’t sound tired kahit basag na ang tuhod ko. By ten, I caught my reflection sa bar mirror — dark eyes, sharp jaw, hair pulled back. Pagod, oo.

I kissed her forehead, then went to my room — full of law books, notes, and highlighters that were barely surviving.

One day, I told myself as I underlined a sentence I didn’t even understand anymore. One day, I’ll stand in that courtroom. One day, I’ll prove it was all worth it.

Adrian

The city never slept — and I liked it that way. From my penthouse window, Manhattan glittered beneath me. Lights. Power. Noise. The pulse of ambition.

At twenty-seven, I was the CEO of Blackwood Corporation — an empire built on precision, ruthlessness, and control. My father trained me to lead. My enemies trained me to win. And I never lost.

People called me cold. Arrogant. Ruthless.

They were right.

Compassion doesn’t build billion-dollar empires. Control does. Fear does. Power does.

But lately, everything felt… predictable. Every deal, every board meeting, every fake smile — all too easy. No challenge. No thrill.

Until this morning.

Another law firm was begging to represent me. Another room full of people trying too hard to impress me. I almost ended the meeting early — until a new voice cut through the noise.

Amelia Cruz.

A junior paralegal. Too young. Too underqualified. The kind of person no one notices. But I noticed.

Her voice was clear. Confident. Sharp. She didn’t stutter, didn’t shrink — kahit halatang kinakabahan. Everyone in the room went silent when she spoke.

For the first time in months, I felt something I hadn’t in a long time — interest.

Her file was thin, but impressive. Top of her class. No connections. Self-made. Scrappy.

A fighter.

Exactly the kind of person who shouldn’t exist in my world — and yet, I couldn’t stop thinking about her.

The fire in her eyes. The way her hands trembled but her words didn’t. She wasn’t fearless — but she refused to bow.

Dangerous. And interesting.

I wasn’t used to being challenged. Especially not by someone invisible to everyone else. But Amelia Cruz? She reminded me of myself. Before all of this. Before the empire. Before the billions.

She would cross my path again. I’d make sure of it.

And when she did — I’d find out whether she was just another ambitious dreamer… or the one woman who could break my control.

I poured myself a glass of scotch, the burn tracing down my throat as the city lights reflected in the crystal. Somewhere out there, Amelia Cruz was fighting to survive.

She didn’t know it yet.

But soon, she’d be fighting me.

  • Empire of Desire   Curiosity and Control

AdrianCuriosity is a dangerous thing.Sa negosyo, it built my empire — asking the right questions, digging deep until every secret was mine.Pero ngayong gabi, that same curiosity turned against me.Because the question wasn’t about profit margins or merger clauses. It was about her.Amelia Cruz.Sinabi ko sa sarili ko, it was just business — gusto ko lang malaman kung sino ang representative ng law firm bidding for one of Blackwood Corporation’s biggest contracts.Half true, maybe.Pero habang nakaupo ako sa opisina, past midnight, staring at the city lights, alam kong may iba pa.“Sir?”Si Lucas, my assistant, stood by the door — always efficient, loyal, never asks more than he needs to.“You asked for a background report on Ms. Cruz?”Tumango ako. “Yes. Everything public — education, employment history, family. Nothing invasive.”He hesitated. Just a second.“Of course, sir.”

  • Empire of Desire   The Arrogant CEO

Hindi talaga siya natutulog nang maaga, lalo na kapag alam niyang OT na naman ako.> Maya: “Tell me you’re out of that office, woman.”Me: “Just left.”Maya: “Good. I’m heating leftovers. You’re coming over.”Napangiti ako kahit pagod.

  • Empire of Desire   Residual Heat

AmeliaBy Monday, nagsimula na talaga.Yung mga tingin. Yung bulungan. The truth was strange enough — isang twenty-four-year-old paralegal, biglang nire-report direkta sa pinaka-ruthless CEO sa buong siyudad.

  • Empire of Desire   The Observation

AmeliaFor the next two days, I tried to disappear.Every time someone mentioned that meeting, my stomach twisted like hell. Apparently, balita sa buong office na may “bagong paralegal na nag-correct kay Adrian Blackwood in front of his entire executive board.” Overnight, naging urban legend ako.Half ng office looked at me like I’d just ruined my career. So I kept my head down, buried in paperwork, pretending I was invisible. Maybe, if I was lucky, the CEO of Blackwood Corporation would just forget I existed. Surely, he had better things to do — mergers, deals, millions of dollars, actual important people.Except… hindi pala.Kasi exactly 11:13 a.m. that Thursday, may pumasok na email. From: Executive Office — Blackwood CorporationSubject: Summons.Summons. As in, sino ba gumagamit ng ganung word sa totoong buhay?> Miss Cruz,Mr. Blackwood requests your presence

  • Empire of Desire   The Challenge

AmeliaDumating ang email ng 7:42 a.m. sharp.> Mandatory attendance: Blackwood Corporation Strategy Review, 9 a.m. — Conference Room 12.Binasa ko ‘yung email dalawang beses. Akala ko glitch.Kasi hello—paralegals don’t attend strategy meetings. Overdressed. At kunwaring confident. The room was huge — glass walls, skyline view. Kita mo buong city sa baba, parang ibang mundo.Sinubukan kong huwag ma-starstruck. Kaso ang hirap.Tapos… pumasok siya.Si Adrian Blackwood.Even surrounded by suits and senior partners, siya pa rin ‘yung center ng universe. His presence demanded attention. Parang ‘yung hangin mismo nag-a-adjust pag dumating siya. Sharp. Controlled. Lethal calm.“Let

  • Empire of Desire   The First Glimpse

The morning light filtered through the boardroom’s floor-to-ceiling windows, tumatama sa glass table at nagre-reflect sa mga pader. Lahat kumikintab—chrome, glass, power. Kahit ‘yung hangin, parang may presyo. The partners were already seated, talking in low, rehearsed voices. Halatang tense lahat. Kasi hindi lang basta meeting ‘to. This was the meeting—the kind that could make or break careers. And for some reason, pakiramdam ko, kasama doon ang career ko.Then the door opened. And he walked in.Tahimik bigla ang lahat—so quiet na rinig mo pa ‘yung mahinang ugong ng aircon.Adrian Blackwood didn’t just enter the room. He owned it. Every step was calculated—calm, confident, commanding. Hindi siya nagmamadali.
