Gripping her umbrella until her knuckles were white and her fingers going numb, Alyssa Hart tried to walk at a normal pace, acting as if nothing was wrong. However, through the pattering of the rain drops above her head, she swore she could hear the light thrum of footsteps behind her. She was sure they were coming for her. They knew her secret and wanted her dead because of it.
To be sure, she quickened her pace slightly, just enough to make it seem like she was trying to escape the rain and not alert the person behind her that she was on to him. She paled even more as she heard the footsteps quicken as well.
It was 11pm on a Thursday night. Because of the rain, the streets were empty, which was a rarity for Los Angeles. She glanced frantically ahead: should she continue on the open street or sneak into the adjacent alley and hope to encounter some homeless people who may serve as her protection?
Aware that time was running out, Alyssa veered sharply into the next alley. Her breath came faster as she feverishly scanned her surroundings, desperate to spot anyone, any sign of life that might offer safety.
But the alley was empty.
The sickening realization hit her like a blow to the gut. No witnesses. No help.
Only her, the darkness, and the footsteps growing louder behind her.
Cole
Cole Donovan stepped out onto his balcony, the rain misting against his skin. He barely noticed. The city stretched out before him in a blur of lights and shadows, but to Cole, it all felt empty and meaningless. He looked down at the marbled flooring of the balcony at his reflection. His dark brown eyes lost their golden liner years ago and his brown hair lost its shein. When you go too long without a mate, you start to lose your essence, everything that gives you substance.
Life had begun to lose its flavor long ago, and now, even the routine of running his security empire, a business he had built after two centuries of dabbling in countless other dealings, felt hollow to him. He took over the company when it was small and technology was just starting out. His father left it to him when he passed away, and he had turned it into a multi-million-dollar empire. He had been waiting a lifetime for his mate, and the longer he waited, the more he withered inside.
His wolf, Zodiak, had gone silent years ago, retreating deep within him, refusing to speak. Cole could still feel him there, a dormant presence buried beneath layers of resignation. But neither of them had the strength or hope to search anymore. Sure, he had dated women, but nothing ever panned out, nothing ever felt right.
The longer Cole stood, leaning over the railing, the stronger the scent became, the wind brought to him a rich, sweet, almost sinful, like vanilla warmed by honey smell. It invaded his senses, igniting something primal in him.
Zodiac stirred, a low growl rumbling through Cole’s chest as his head jerked from side to side, hunting for the source.
Then in the shadows he saw her.
She moved down the slick, empty street like a vision pulled from his deepest, most desperate dreams, radiant even under the cold drizzle, fragile yet fierce. His mate.
The mate he had waited a lifetime to find.
For one breathless second, the world narrowed to only her, every light, every sound, every thought fading into nothing.
Then a nightmare shattered the dream.
A shadow followed her, creeping closer, and in the dim light, Cole caught the gleam of a blade, a long, wicked knife, nearly a machete, gripped in the stalker's hand.
She turned into an alley and vanished from sight.
Fear exploded inside him, fierce and wild. Zodiak roared for freedom, and Cole didn't fight him. He finally found the person he had waited his whole existence for and was not about to let anything happen to her.
With a snarl that ripped from the depths of his soul, he let the wolf rise, bones cracked, muscles stretched, skin rippled as Zodiak surged free, a massive wolf with jet-black fur and burning gold eyes.
The pain was nothing compared to the terror slicing through him, the desperate need to reach her, his mate.
Nothing, not rain, not darkness, not death itself, would keep him from reaching her.
With a powerful leap, Zodiak vaulted over the balcony railing, landing silently in the soaked alley below. Rain sheeted off his thick coat as he sniffed the air, locking onto her scent, vanilla and honey, now tainted with fear.
He raced after it, paws pounding the slick pavement, a silent ghost in the night.
Blake's POV I stood in front of the altar watching her walk over to me. This time around, I was certain there would be no Isabella to crash the wedding, nor my father to make silly scheming plots. This was just me and Helen, saying our vows and tightening the bond that held us together. My mom, her dad, Dominic, Elizabeth, and Felicia were all in attendance. It was a small ceremony composed of all the people that mattered. This was exactly what she had envisioned and I was super glad that we had managed to bring it to life. "Hey." She beamed at me as soon as I clasped my hands in hers. "Hey," I replied to her and led her up to the altar. We both faced each other and even though we were surrounded by quite a few people, she was the only one I could see right now. God, my entire world is composed of her. It was so interesting how I had gone from not caring about any woman at all to caring about one woman so much and the little life she was growing within her.Yeah, you heard that ri
Blake's POV I quickly parked in front of the shelter Jeffery had sent me the location of. The police were still on their way according to their last report. I was advised to stand down and wait until they got here, but I just couldn't. This was Helen we were talking about for God's sake. I was not ready to let any harm come to her. My private security was with me, and that was all the protection I would need. I could hear the sounds of gunshots, and I was certain it was Jeffrey and the small team he had brought here to work. "Sir, I would need you to stay here in the vehicle while we go out there and assess the situation. As soon as it is safe for you to come out, I will let you know." The head of Helen's bodyguards said. I shot the man a harsh glare, reminding him that all of this was half his fault. If only he had ignored all her silly warnings and stayed with her, none of this would be happening. "Fine, you can come with us, but you need to stay behind me at all times." He wa
Helen's POV "Please just let me go. I promise you that I would not say a word about this to anyone." I said after the bodyguard was done tying me up. "Unfortunately, that is not possible. Blake and all the security agencies are already looking for you. If they find you, they would hound you for the truth and you would sing like a canary. I can not afford to have you rat me out to the police." The old man said. "I won't mention your name. Look, we can pin it on Isabella. I will tell them I managed to escape from her and that will be all. Please, just let me go. Remember that I am your son's wife." I said and quickly regretted that. He hated the fact that I was Blake's wife. I was supposed to be a constant source of irritation for Blake and not the woman whom he loves with his all. It was crazy and annoying all at the same time. "Well, I never wanted you to get married to my son in the first place. Moreover, with what you have done to Isabella, I think it is only fair that you suff
Helen's POVI fretted as I watched my sister go unconscious beneath me. I grabbed her hand and tried to wake her up, but she wasn't responding. I could not tell if I had killed her or not and I felt really bad. "Helen, you need to get a hold of yourself. You didn't kill her. Even if she is dead, it is not your fault. You are simply trying to escape." I said to myself, trying to calm my racing heart down. How quickly everything had changed was still a surprise to me. Who would have thought that the reason why my sister hated me so much was because I was pretty and good? All my life, I had thought I was not good enough and it was the reason why they all hated me. Well, now I know the truth and if I managed to escape from here today, I would never listen to her again. "You would not have been in this situation if you had just listened to Blake," I said to myself as I walked towards the door that led out of the bunker. The path leading to it was slant, helping to make it easy for on
Isabella's POV I rolled my eyes in anger at Helen's friend. The bitch just couldn't keep to herself. All the suspicious glances she had been throwing my way all day hadn't gotten lost on me. She had a vendetta against me, and it must be because of what Helen had said to her about me. I was lost o
Helen's POV I was all set and ready to go to the studio when my phone pinged with a message from my sister. I picked it up and read. 'Hey, do you mind if we spend some time at the set today? I would really love to watch you work. If yes, text me the address to your studio.' A bright smile lined
Helen's POV "Where the hell have you been? I just got off a call with Elizabeth who told me that you left the studio earlier in the day and moved your shoot to the next day." Blake said to me as I walked into the house. He was already off his work clothes and I could tell that he had been back ho
Blake's POV My phone vibrated on the table, pulling my gaze away from the computer screen. I have been up all morning working. A glance at the phone showed that it was my private investigator calling and I quickly took the call, hoping he had some update on the activities of that bitch, Skylar."T
