The Special Gift

Alice's point of view:

It was dark, still; I wasn't thinking of going back.

I know, Evan was right calling me not the smart type. I should cherish my life in a better way than to sleep under the stars in the exact era when I was attacked with Josh by vampires.

Why would I be here in the middle of the night? Well, I don't know. Perhaps because I'm a werewolf, and I shall not fear the night. I own the night actually, and if those bloodsuckers showed up in my way, I wouldn't mind trying the taste of their flesh.

Well, there's also another reason. The red eyes guy. Didn't get the chance to thank him for saving my life. Perhaps he might show up here again.

I know Evan warned me about him, but still, I can't stop myself from thinking about him. His red eyes are what I see whenever I close my eyes. I wonder what sort of eye color they hid behind.

Lost in my thoughts I was when I felt someone watching. Didn't freak out because his scent was familiar to me.

" Wanna join, or you'll keep watching from there!"

" Thought you would never notice me!" Teased Tristan, and I was like.

" Dude, I'm not that bad." I started, and he said while joining me on the ground.

" Yes, I know. You just put a necklace that was made to kill you around your neck."

" You guys are never going to let this off?" I wonder and he simply says. " No, never!"

" What are you here for?" I asked him.

" To watch the stars. Isn't that obvious?"

It was clear that he was joking, it's just that I didn't find the joke funny.

" No seriously, what are you doing here?"

" What's between you and my brother?" He answered my question with another question. I kind of hate that type of answer. Yet, can't deny that it makes him look smart.

" Nothing." I wasn't sure if I was lying or telling the truth. " We're not friends and we're not enemies."

" You guys really look like each other. No wonder you are destined for each other."

He wasn't looking at me while talking, his eyes were facing the stars in the sky. He seems sure from what he was saying, and denying would do me no favor. It might even make me look childish. So instead, I decided to keep quiet.

" He's not a bad person. He's just under too much pressure."

I rolled my eyes, causing him to stop talking.

" I've been serious..." He began, and I cut him off.

" He's a prince. The type that does nothing but give orders. I can see how this can be hard for his majesty."

" That's not true. He has been always working hard only to prove that he deserves to be the next king. Hard training, too much studying, and hours of protocol lessons aren't easy things to deal with since you were born. And as an added perk, he had no right to choose the person he wanted to spend his life with..."

"... Wait!" I cut him off again. Repeat that last one again.

" He had no right to choose the person he wanted to spend his life with."

So that's it, this was the answer I was looking for. He's not with her because he doesn't want me, he is with her because he has to. Thinking about it for a quiet part of the time, it ended up not making sense.

"That makes little sense!" I remark. "A king has all the rights to be mated to his destined mate, and no one else's."

I lecture about the law that we all know. Still, Tristan seemed to be not into what I said.

" For me, yeah, but it's not the same for him." He started explaining, and I started wondering again.

" How's that?"

" Well, while my mother is father's mate. His mother isn't the same."

Even when I feel too close to understanding what is happening, I end up finding myself not.

" You guys don't have the same mother?" I wondered when he ended up shaking his head, denying that he shared the same mother.

" I'm more illegitimate for the crown than my brother is. The reason why he needs to mate with Megan, one of our highest nobles. Only then he would stand equal chances to mine." He explains, which causes him to conclude.

" In brief, he prefers the throne to love. Sort of makes sense."

" No, it doesn't!" He shouted a bit, being tense." He's losing himself, and you are the one to save him from himself."

Well, I kind of built another theory about that Tristan guy.

" You don't want me to tear him away from that so-called Megan, only so that you remain the one with the highest chances..."

I stopped, not because he interrupted me, but only because he started laughing.

" That was the finest thing I've heard during a week. Oh my goodness, you both really fit together."

" What's the funny thing I've said?" I wondered not knowing which part of my speech was that funny.

" No, what made me laugh wasn't what you said. It is actually you. You are too paranoid, and you can't trust people around you no matter how close they are to you, the same as Evan. He is totally like you."

" That's not being paranoid," I corrected him," It's called collecting facts, and using them to objectify. In a more simple way - thinking."

" I don't want the throne, and neither my mate. Eternity is a long time to spend in one seat. We want to be more like free spirits. I'm sick of schedules, of rules, of limits. I want to be free. Unlike me, my brother seemed to find his happiness in those silly things. That's what he thinks."

I don't know what was wrong with those Lycans, but the more I tried to understand them, I ended up not understanding them at all.

" That's what he thinks?" I repeated after him, then he started explaining.

" He can have the entire world in between his hands, but he will never be happy. Happiness is to find someone who shares with you everything, goodness, and badness. Happiness is to find the only person that can take away your pain. Happiness is to be in love, and no one can provide him with love but the person destined for him - you."

He was quite right, no one can be happy on his own. The more we believe that we are invincible on our own, the weaker we get.

I want to help him, he's my mate after all, but I don't know how to do it. Lost in my thoughts I was when Tristan spoke again.

" What are you thinking about?"

" I want to help but I know how?" I told him honestly." I rejected him the day I met him, yet, he never accepts my rejection. He kissed me, then called it a mistake. He told me that he can't take his eyes off me, yet all I see is him ignoring me..."

" Claim what's yours - that's the only way you'll get all the answers you 're searching for."

" Claim what's mine - How's that?" I asked, hoping to receive an answer, hopefully, that's what happened.

" We're hiding back at the palace tomorrow, we can't keep her anymore. Let's make a deal, you come with us and give yourself and my brother a chance. In exchange, I will provide you with everything you need to know about yourself. Also, I can guarantee for you the best training you could get as both witch and wolf."

" For how long?" I asked since I can't deny it, this seems like a lifetime deal for me. I won't ever be never able to learn about myself without the help of the witches that refused to find me as one of their own.

" Six months!" He informed me, and I found it sort of logical.

" Deal!" I told him, then he stood up and excused himself.

" See you tomorrow then. As for now, I need to go. " He vanished after that, and I kept watching the stars about an hour after him. Think about the new upcoming chapter in my life. I was going to give my mate another chance, and I won't leave what's mine to any sort of female Lycan.

When I felt exhausted, I decided to go back home. Well, that's what was decided, not what happened.

When I was up on my feet, and before leaving. My eyes met a pair of familiar red eyes.

The vampire who saved my life was facing me with a charming smile on his face...
