Danielle's POV.
I wore a frown, glaring at him as his gaze narrowed towards me. I could see there was concern in his eyes but I was in no mood for his sympathy.
"Hand me my coat," I said to Fred who did as I asked. I slid my hands into its pocket and retrieved the divorce papers. I had it with me since the day of the accident, waiting for Jayden to come by.
I signed my name without a second thought, handing the document to him. "Here, Jayden. We are done. That's the divorce."
Jayden looked at Fred and I with no despicable emotions for a while. He was utterly shocked by my actions and couldn't react.
I turned again towards Fred. "When can I start work at your company?"
Through the corner of my eye, I could see Jayden's jaw drop in disbelief. The concern in his face vanished and he was instantly furious. Fisting his hands and shooting a glare at Fred who smiled calmly, unflinched.
"Why did it take you so long to come, anyway?" I turned to face him.
"I could have come earlier, Danielle." He moved towards me, attempting to sit on the bed. "Her health has been really bad and I just had to make sure she was fine before coming over."
"Of course." My throat was dry. "It's always about her."
“Danielle, I’m so-” Jayden made another attempt to sit but Fred put my coat on the bed. He glared at Fred and the concern on his face disappeared immediately.
"...so what?" Jayden dismissively said. "I don’t care about you." I guessed he was angry because of Fred's behavior and I could sense that he felt slightly guilty.
I was frustrated by his arrogance. There was no genuine remorse in his tone. "fuck you jake!" I flared at him. Jayden recoiled in shock.
"I think I have to leave for a moment," Fred said. I wanted to argue, but it was pointless. He was gone before I could part my lips. I sighed and looked at Jayden, still burning with rage.
The nurse got ready to leave as well. "Please make sure that she doesn't leave her bed. Give her whatever she needs, it's important that she rests well. Keep a close eye on her. She needs to be hydrated. And if she tells you that she is hungry, start with something light."
Jayden nodded that he understood her, gulping a lump.
"Are you comfortable sitting? I think you should be resting." He slowly lowered his butt to the bed.
"I'm good."
He nodded. There was guilt on his face as he leaned in to slide a strand of hair that lay on my face behind my ear. "How do you feel?" His muscular arm brushed against mine, sending a touch-sent rush through me. I flashed a glance at him, feeling my pulse quicken.
"I'm good," I responded, almost losing my voice. I shifted away from him. "What about you?" The room smelled just like his cologne, the same fragrance I smell everytime he fucked me, every time I slept and woke up on his arm I hated to admit that I had indeed missed him.
"I'm good, too. I guess we should uhm. Talk about the divorce."
That made my heart skip a beat and I didn’t know why I pressed my thighs together. Was he about to plead that I change my mind? I wasn't going to do that.
"Go on..." I looked at him.
"Well," He swallowed. "We should discuss the logistics, post divorce arrangements, the baby and everything else you consider necessary."
I heaved. "About the baby..."
He reached out to take my hand, rubbing me softly, "I know. I heard and I'm sorry."
Well, He did sound like he was sorry. His face showed so much guilt.
"Maybe we should talk about the division of our assets, Jayden. I wish to hire a lawyer and secure a settlement."
He shrugged defensively, "That's okay."
"I don't want any more fights, Jayden. Let's just do this cleanly." I responded, surprised by the way he handled the situation.
"I understand." He said with a sad smile, looking at me for a while. "Do you hate me now?" His voice was somewhat hoarse. His gaze lingered on me longer than usual. His eyes tracing down my face with an intensity that made me feel tense.
I swallowed, feeling the weight of his question. Turning to look at him once more, I said, "I don't have the energy to hate you, Jayden." I looked up at the clock. It was almost six in the evening. Jayden had been with me for four long hours.
"I suppose I'll leave now.” He leaned closer to tidy up the quilts for me, “Can I… Hug you?” it appeared he hadn't thought it through because he immediately pulled away, anxiety laced in his eyes. “You don’t want me to be here. I-I’ll get Cindy to look after you. Rest well."
"I understand," I replied calmly, trying hard to not smell his cologne and resisting the urge to ask him for the hug,"Have a great evening." As I watched him leave, I wondered if he was going home—to her.
The moment he left, I stared at the door, feeling a pang of regret. I still loved him but I knew it was time to let go. Tears welled up in my eyes as I drew in air. This was the right decision.
My thoughts were interrupted by a sudden vibration. It was my phone on the bedside table buzzing. I peered into it. The caller was Cindy, Jayden's sister. She was my closest friend.
"Hey, babes. How are you?"
"I'm awake now," I responded. "I don't feel much better. Jayden just left and to be honest, I'm having second thoughts."
"Do you want to go back to him? That asshole. Fuck him."
"It's not the best thing for me to do, so I won't."
"I know how you're feeling, babes. But I'm with you through this. Stay strong."
My phone beeped. A notification had popped in and it’s from Katherine. I checked it immediately.
"Guess whose baby he is." She sent me a picture of her child.
I zoomed in closely, feeling a pang of jealousy towards the child. Many questions ran through my mind. When did this happen? Katherine had only just returned. So, she wasn't sick like Jayden had said, she was pregnant! It was all coming together.
How long has this been going on? I felt my hate for Jayden returning with a wild intensity as I continued to look at the child. I could see a slight resemblance between the baby and Jayden.
And then... Something tugged at my memory.
What. the. hell.
Not only was the child familiar, the babysitter was familiar. It was the baby from earlier and his babysitter. A gasp left my lips. Was it mere coincidence?
"Are you okay, babes?" I had forgotten that Cindy was still on the phone with me.
"Yes. I'm good. But I'll never forgive Jake and Katherine." The child was Jayden's as it seemed and Katherine was rubbing that on my face.
"I wouldn't forgive him if I were you, so I'm solidly behind you."
After I hung up, I rang for the nurse to come. "When will I leave this shit hole?" I didn't mean to sound so rude, but the frustration I felt got the better part of me.
The nurse seemed to understand. "Four more days, ma'am. Don't worry too much."
I dialed the number of Fred almost immediately, holding my breath until he picked up. "How did it go with Jayden?"
I had no time to answer, so I went straight to business. "I have decided not to take the job."
"What?" Fred seemed to take it personal. "This is about him, right?"
My fingers tapped softly at the back of my phone as I exhaled slowly. "No. I got a settlement for the divorce. I am thinking of launching a cosmetic line, and with your luxury clothing brand, we could create a powerful synergy. What do you say we partner to create something unbeatable?”
Katherine's POV*Two Years Later*The air felt thick and heavy as I stood by the window of the rundown motel. The curtains were thin, barely hiding me from the outside world. Every sound made me jump—a car door slamming, the shuffle of footsteps on the gravel outside. My world had come crashing down, and I had nowhere left to turn. For weeks, I’d been dodging police, hiding in places I never thought I’d have to set foot in. My once-loyal allies were gone, every single one of them scattering like rats when the ship started sinking. The life I had built, the power I once held, was nothing but ashes now.I stared at the duffel bag on the bed. It was all I had left—some cash, a fake passport, and a change of clothes. It wasn’t much, but it would have to do. I couldn’t stay here. The net was closing in, and if I didn’t leave soon, I’d be caught. Again. A knock on the door startled me. My heart leaped into my throat, and I froze, listening. It came again, louder this time.“Katherine,” a v
Danielle's POV The day started like any other. I was sitting in the living room, flipping through some documents for work, when my phone buzzed on the coffee table. I reached for it, not thinking much of it, but when I saw the name on the screen, my heart stopped for a moment. It was my adoptive mother.I hadn’t spoken to her—or my adoptive father—since everything came to light about my biological parents. Their reaction to the news had been cold and distant. They had accused me of being ungrateful, of turning my back on the life they had given me. I had tried to explain that finding my biological parents didn’t mean I loved them any less, but they hadn’t wanted to hear it.Now, months later, seeing her name pop up felt strange. My thumb hovered over the screen, debating whether to answer. But curiosity won out, and I pressed the button.“Hello?” I said, my voice cautious.“Danielle,” she said. Her voice was soft, almost hesitant. It was so different from the sharp tone I remembered
Jayden's POVThe house was finally quiet. The chaos of the last few weeks was settling down, and for the first time in a long time, I felt like I could breathe. Danielle had put our son to bed, and now we were alone. Just the two of us. It felt like the right moment—no interruptions, no lingering danger. I had been waiting for this, for a chance to talk to her without the weight of the world pressing down on us.I sat on the couch, staring at the soft glow of the lamp in the corner. I could hear her moving around in the kitchen, putting away dishes. Every little sound she made seemed to fill the room, making it harder to focus. I had been thinking about what to say for days, rehearsing the words in my head, but now that the moment was here, everything felt like a blur. When she finally walked into the living room, she looked surprised to see me sitting there. Her hair was loose, falling in soft waves around her shoulders. She wasn’t wearing any makeup, and she looked tired but beautif
Danielle's POVLucas asked to meet up after work so we could have a drink or two and talk about ‘Stuff’ he didn't bother to explain. When I arrived, Lucas was already sitting by the window, his profile outlined by the soft glow of the street lights outside. He wasn’t drinking his coffee—he just stared at it, his hands clasped tightly around the cup as if it were the only thing anchoring him. I hesitated for a moment, unsure of what I was walking into, before finally approaching the table.“Hey,” I said, sliding into the chair across from him. “You okay?”He looked up at me, and for a moment, his green eyes didn’t reveal anything. Then, slowly, his expression softened into something I couldn’t quite name—sadness, maybe, or determination.“I’m fine,” he said, his voice low. “Thanks for coming, Danielle. I know it might not have been convenient.”“Of course,” I replied, leaning forward slightly. “You’ve been there for me more times than I can count. What’s going on?”He didn’t answer ri
Katherine's POV I sat in the corner of a damp, crumbling room, listening to the faint hum of the city outside. My crew—what little of it remained—was scattered, arrested, or hiding like rats in the walls. Everything I’d built was gone, torn apart piece by piece by Danielle’s real parents.I had not seen it coming. Everything happened all at once and too fast. It had moved from Zeddy withdrawing his support and my Mafia colleagues asking what was wrong and why it was hard to fund them and fund myself, to being a scapegoat for Danielle's new parents.Everything I thought I had was an illusion. Perhaps, I never really did have anything. How had I been foolish enough to agree with Zeddy each time he said that I had everything was one thing I didn't understand. Perhaps, I didn't get enough from him when I could. I hadn't thought he'd leave so abruptly and now there was no way he was ever coming back. What if he was right and it was true that I'd never be able to get the revenge I wanted
Katherine's POV I sat in front of the mirror, the harsh lighting of the room illuminating every detail of my face. It had been a long time since I’d looked at myself this closely, and the reflection staring back at me no longer seemed like my own. I had to do this. I had to be unrecognizable when I returned to the town, to slip in without anyone knowing who I was. The police were still searching for me, and Danielle and Jayden were getting closer and closer to destroying me. I couldn’t let that happen. I couldn’t let myself be caught. Not now, not when I was so close to winning.I had made the decision. Plastic surgery. It would be painful, yes. But it would be worth it. I would erase every trace of the old Katherine, the one who was once seemed to adore, love, and respect. The one who had been so close to having everything. But now, I would return as someone new, someone no one could recognize. And I would bring Danielle and Jayden down.I had already scheduled the procedure. Ther
Katherine's POV Danielle found her real parents. Billionaire philanthropists. Nothing stung more than this new revelation.I was still going to strike. It wasn’t just about getting Jayden back. That ship had sailed a long time ago. It was making them see what they thought they had and losing it.Zeddy had been more than helpful in getting me started. His connections were wide-reaching, and his wealth was an endless source of potential leverage. I had already started assembling a new crew—people who could do what needed to be done, without hesitation. There was no room for weakness in this world. I needed to strike at the heart of Danielle and Jayden's lives, tear them apart piece by piece.I was sitting in one of Zeddy’s private meeting rooms, the faint hum of the city below us. I leaned back in my chair, arms crossed, my mind already running through all the ways I could make this work. Zeddy was sitting across from me, his expression unreadable. He had been helpful, but I could sens
Danielle's POV had been waiting for this moment for so long that it almost didn’t feel real. The text from Daniel earlier that day had confirmed everything I’d been hoping for: my biological parents had agreed to meet with me. They’d found me, after all these years, and now, everything was about to change. It was a quiet morning when I left the house, my stomach a mess of nerves. I hadn’t told anyone but Jayden about the meeting. It felt too big, too private to share with people. I hadn’t wanted to put any pressure on the situation, but now that I was on my way to meet them, everything seemed so uncertain. The restaurant they had chosen was tucked away in a corner of the city, a small, upscale place that didn’t draw too much attention. I felt out of place the moment I stepped inside, the atmosphere too quiet, too refined. But it wasn’t the setting that mattered—it was what I was about to face. The parents I had always imagined in my head, the ones who might love me and accept me for
Danielle's POVI was sitting at the kitchen table, trying to focus on the stack of paperwork in front of me. It had been a long, exhausting day, and there was still so much to get through. The files I was sorting through seemed to blur together, all the words merging into one long, unending line of text. I could hardly concentrate. My thoughts kept drifting, spiraling back to what I had learned about my biological parents. The private investigator had sent me a lead a few days ago, and it was almost too good to be true.I couldn’t stop thinking about that message from Daniel. I wanted to get all the details he had available and I wanted to also share with Jayden. The progress was commendable and it made me jittery. I stared at the stack of paperwork that I'd volunteered to take home and shook my head. Work was usually my one escape. It was one way I could actually forget about everything. The phone buzzed on the table, pulling me from my thoughts. I grabbed it quickly, my heart racin
