He is obviously in love with Ava but he never realized it because in his way he thought he had to remain faithful to the love he felt for Emma. He blamed Ava for what happened between them and for that he was always rejecting her. But I guess after so many years he felt for her without knowing it.

Emma is hiding something and I think it has to do with what happened with Ava and Rowan. Maybe she drugged him to sleep with him but instead he ended up with Ava. However they only blamed Ava because she wanted Trevor since young age. Trevor married her as taking responsibility for what he did.
