Chapter 2

Author: Amber Vine
Blaire's face darkened, her jaw tightening as she glared at me.

"Stop using that as a pathetic excuse! My uncle signed that suspension order, and I can have him revoke it right this second!"

She pulled out her phone and frantically dialed Vincent Donovan, screaming, "Uncle Vincent, Asher is refusing to budge. Talk some sense into him for me!"

She shoved the phone in my face, switching it to speakerphone.

Vincent's voice boomed through the speaker. "Asher, the hospital only penalized you to appease the patient's furious family. As a doctor, you ought to be the bigger person.

"Malcolm is in critical condition right now. Get back to the department and take over the patient immediately. If you manage to pull off a flawless surgery, I'll have someone revoke the suspension notice first thing tomorrow morning."

I looked into Blaire's bloodshot eyes.

"Dr. Donovan, the suspension period is officially two weeks," I said calmly into the phone. "If I stepped foot in an operating room right now, it'd be illegal."

Vincent's voice rose at once. "Asher, I'm the executive vice president of this hospital. If I say you can operate, you can operate! The hospital will take the fall if anything goes sideways. Don't push your luck when I'm being nice!"

"Alright." I nodded. "Draft an official letter right now. Have it stamped with both the hospital's official seal and your personal signature, stating that you assume sole personal liability for everything. Have it delivered to my house."

There was silence on the other end of the line.

Getting a bureaucrat to take accountability was like trying to pin jelly to a wall.

I slapped Blaire's phone away from my face and gripped the doorknob. "Until that document is in my hands, don't bother me."

With that, I slammed the door shut.

The roaring curses outside instantly doubled in volume and intensity.

That burly relative of the Pierces began kicking the door like a madman, making the old metal frame groan under the strain.

I returned to the living room, picked up my mug, and took a sip of cold coffee.

Just then, my new phone buzzed with several texts from Cole Barrett, an attending physician in cardiothoracic surgery.

"Asher, they brought a bunch of people over to your place. Whatever you do, do not open the door! Malcolm has an aortic dissection that's already torn into his brachiocephalic artery. He's in terrible shape."

"Ms. Sutton just lost her mind in the department, trying to force Dr. Aldridge to perform the surgery. He took one look at the angiogram and said that even if specialists flew in from Jorvia overnight, there's only a ten percent success rate. You're the only one in the entire state who can pull this off."

I quickly responded, "Do not touch that patient."

Cole immediately replied with a sighing emoji.

"Dr. Aldridge wouldn't even let him set foot in the operating room. He just issued a critical condition notice. Blaire's uncle is rushing to the emergency department. I think they're planning to drag you back by force."

Staring at the screen, I scoffed.

Drag me back by force? They really had some nerve.

Suddenly, the violent kicking outside stopped. It was instantly replaced by the roar of an electric drill.

Blaire's men were actually drilling out my lock.

Two minutes later, the lock cylinder was destroyed, and the door was kicked open.

Several men in black suits swarmed into the apartment, instantly blocking the entire entryway.

Blaire stepped inside, her heels crunching over the metallic debris scattered on the floor. A mocking sneer curled at the edges of her lips.

"Did you really have to make things ugly, Asher?" she said. "I couldn't care less about tearing this dump apart, but Malcolm doesn't have time to waste."

With a wave of her hand, two of the men stepped forward and seized my arms.

Margaret rushed in behind them, her eyes bloodshot as she pointed a finger at me and cursed, "You heartless animal! If anything happens to my son, I'll make the rest of your life a living hell!"

I didn't put up a fight.

"Coercing medical personnel through physical violence… Ms. Sutton, you truly have a knack for landing your uncle in hot water," I remarked.

Blaire scoffed. "Take him straight to the emergency department!"

He was facing charges for abuse of power, illegal authorizations, and a long string of financial crimes. What awaited him now was a long prison sentence.Blaire, on the other hand, was left to face the absolute fury of Malcolm's family. After losing their son, the Pierces channeled every ounce of their hatred directly toward her. They camped outside her apartment daily, vandalizing her walls, shattering her windows, and leaving creepy, ritualistic puppets right in her hallway. The police formally opened a criminal investigation against her for

Blaire's grip on my leg loosened. She stared blankly at the body inside the resuscitation bay as the nurses drew a white sheet over it.Vincent collapsed heavily onto the floor, his face ashen. He knew it, too. After a catastrophic medical incident like this, his days as executive vice president were as good as over.Over on the corridor bench, Margaret slowly came to. The very first thing she heard was Spencer announcing the time of death."My boy!"Margaret let out a ragged scream, rolling off the bench onto the floor. Her eyes swept the room, instantly locking onto Blaire, whose face was already smeared with blood. All of a sudden, Margaret charged at her like a furious mother bear, catching Blaire by the hair. "You! You killed my son!"Her palms struck Blaire's face over and over again."If you hadn't insisted on suspending Dr. Whitlock, my son would've been in surgery hours ago! You brought this curse on us! You're a murderer!"Blaire couldn't fight back. Her nose bled h

Blaire frantically shook her head. Then, she let out a piercing, ragged shriek, lunging at me like a lunatic. "You did this on purpose, Asher! You intentionally hid your skills from me just so you could sit back and watch me make a fool of myself today!"Looking at her manic state, I found the entire scene incredibly pathetic."I hid my skills?" I asked, my gaze stone-cold. "If you had bothered to look at the hospital's wall of honor even once, if you had asked a single doctor in cardiothoracic surgery, if you had shown even a shred of interest in the man who was your husband in name for the past two years, you would've known there isn't a single chest in this state I can't crack open and fix."Beside me, Cole let out a sharp scoff."Ms. Sutton, Dr. Aldridge told you about Asher's skills months ago. Do you remember what you said back then? You said he was just a brainless drone who only knew how to cut people open. Without your uncle backing him, he wouldn't be worth a damn thin

Vincent looked as if he had just been struck by lightning, freezing completely in his tracks.Blaire's face was entirely drained of color, her eyes practically bulging out of her head as she stared at William."W-What did you just say?" Her voice cracked, pitching into a panicked shriek.I slowly rose from the shadows where I had been sitting. Step by step, I walked into the light."Professor Grant," I said, looking at William.William whipped his head around toward me. Seeing me in my everyday clothes, radiating the pungent smell of liquor, his eyes widened in sheer disbelief."Asher? Why are you dressed like that?"Furious, he pointed his cane at me. "A patient is dying in there, and you're standing out here like this? Why aren't you scrubbed in? And have you been drinking?"Facing my mentor's anger, I straightened my back. I pointed at Blaire, who was still paralyzed on the floor, and then shifted my finger to Vincent."Professor Grant, I can't operate. Five days ago, w

Blaire sprinted out of the resuscitation bay and collapsed to the floor in front of Vincent."Uncle Vincent, where's the specialist you mentioned? When will the specialist from Jorvia get here?" she demanded.Vincent wiped the cold sweat from his forehead. "I got hold of him. Professor Grant happens to be in town for a conference, and he's already on his way by car. He'll be here in 20 minutes."It was as if Blaire had been thrown a lifeline. She scrambled to her feet, whirled around to face me, a fresh spark of hope reigniting in her eyes."Asher, did you honestly think Malcolm was a dead man just because you refused to operate? Professor William Grant is the best cardiothoracic surgeon in the country, and he'll be here any minute. Compared to him, you're nothing!"She smoothed her messy hair, thrusting a finger in my face."Once Professor Grant saves Malcolm, I swear to God I won't just get your license revoked. I'll make sure you end up in prison."I leaned back in my chair,

I tipped my head back and drank the remaining liquor in a few heavy gulps, then let go, letting the empty bottle shatter into a million pieces on the floor. Everyone froze in shock.Cole's jaw dropped, Spencer's eyes widened, and even the two men in black took a synchronized step back."You…" Blaire gasped, her finger trembling violently as she pointed at me.I wiped the residue from the corner of my mouth and looked at Vincent's face, which had gone pale."Chapter Four, Article 12 of the Code of Practice for Surgeons," I said. "Doctors are strictly prohibited from performing surgery or other high-risk medical procedures while intoxicated. Anyone who violates that rule will have their medical license revoked and may face criminal charges."Dr. Donovan, does your emergency authorization include a clause that allows a doctor to operate while drunk?"Vincent stumbled backward, his finger trembling as he pointed at me. But for a long moment, he couldn't form a single syllable."Yo
