Well, I don’t know why, but my heart was beating. I wasn’t sure if it was because I was afraid to hear the story of Mom or the whole politician thing, but I wanted answers, and that’s for sure.

I was now in the kitchen, making the woman, hold on, my aunt, a cup of tea. She was shivering, rubbing her arms so aggressively that I somehow pitied her.

Walking back to her, I handed her the cup and asked if she needed a cookie or something.

“Thank you,” she said, shaking her head before she took a sip of her tea. I nodded, then walked to the coat hanger and picked one of my coats, coming back to put it on her as she continued shivering.

“I wish this room could get warmer,” I said, as the room was cold.

“Believe me, I’m not shivering from the cold,” she said. I nodded, then sat down on the couch, my eyes on her.

“Your mother–”

“Oh yes. You said she was going to kill you?” I asked, and she nodded. Even though I preferred she calm down first, I couldn’t wait any longer.

Okay, it was still very early, and I had just put my daughter in a car; she was going to be miles away from me, so calming down now was for the best.“Oh wow, I mean…” I chuckled calmly, and don’t be surprised, I’ve done law, all those hours of reading, I mastered the game of calmness. “I haven’t run a campaign before.”“Well, I have faith in you, and I have no choice, so I’ll have my assistant call you to set up all the meetings, or, you know what, let me meet you at the firm.” I didn’t know why she was sounding so calm about this.“I would love to, but I’m on leave.”“Well, not anymore. Now I have an early meeting I gotta run.” And just like that, she took me in her arms, and apparently we were hugging—a brief hug—before she quickly broke it off and headed for the door without turning back.Well, I didn’t waste a minute either. As soon as I saw she was gone, I made it to the elevator, then up to my penthouse.“Honey, how are you?” I found Nona up, holding a cup of coffee in my kitch

There was no time to think or figure anything out. My mother was downstairs, probably hoping to kill someone, and I had to act fast. A woman who kills her own parents is a dangerous one to me.“You’re not coming up, Mama,” I said.“Oh baby, this is not how it works.”“Oh yes, it’s how it works. You’re going to go home, rest, and wait for me to meet you tomorrow so we can calmly talk.”“I am trying to protect you.”“I’m doing the same.”“But that’s not how motherhood works. See, I do the protecting, and right now—”“Right now it’s late, and you need to rest.” I cut her off, hoping on the small shred of what Nona told me—that she cared about me. I hoped it was enough to make her listen to me.“Baby…” she sighed. From her tone, I could tell it was working.“Please. I promise you, tomorrow we’ll talk, and if your reason is valid, I’ll let you do what you want.” I only said that to calm her.“Okay fine. Greet my granddaughter for me, okay? Take care.”“Goodnight to you too,” I said, and th

I remained still, my eyes glued to the TV as Pablo said Rodrigo was putting the children to sleep. Hearing that relieved me somehow, especially Parker’s squeals, which I guessed Rodrigo was making her laugh.“Sit. Now.” Pablo ordered, and remembering Presley’s advice, I sank into the couch, begging Mom in my head to leave the gun alone. “In a minute you'll see our mother make us proud,” he said, grinning. That made me wonder if he’d forced her to do this, but with what Presley told me and how Mom sounded on the phone, I was sure she was doing this on her own.“Why?”“Oh no, she’s acting on her own. I didn’t ask her to do that,” Pablo answered. The question was for Mom, but since he seemed in the mood to answer me, I decided to get some clarity.“Why me?”“Oh, I know where you've been. I know you met that lesbian detective. Do you know she has it hard for you?”“I’ll figure out a way, but I’ll give you everything. Just please, leave my daughter out of this.”“Your daughter is safe as l

The way mom spoke of him, how he helped her adopt Pablo because she was broken, how he supported her even when she loved another man, no, she couldn’t possibly do that to a man who loved her like that.“He had an affair with Nona.”“Nona?” The name sounded familiar. Presley nodded, and I tried to recall. Finally it came back to me. She was the reason mom left for Italy. “Oh yes, Nona. Wait, say what?”“Your mother was forced into a family marriage right after giving birth to you and giving you away. She never loved the man, but that was the condition of her parents. They adopted Pablo and then, since the man was never loved, he had an affair with Nona. You can fill in the rest.”“I can’t believe this.” My mother, a criminal? I mean, I should be happy now since she went to apologise, although that’s not the story she told me.“Nona has been in a wheelchair for years. Your mother put her there.”“Impossible, mom loves her.”“Well, she hasn’t forgiven her all these years, and if you ask

This was ridiculous. What did she mean Mom was hiding something too? What could she possibly be hiding when she just called me and confirmed she suspected Pablo? No, I couldn’t believe her but it was Presley, one of the smartest women I’d ever met. I still remembered how she fished out Christian’s trick, and denying her now would be like last time, when I left her on the side of the road only to later find out she was right. With that thought, I quickly reached down for my phone. Once I got it, I placed it on loudspeaker since it had fallen where people stepped. It wasn’t dirty, but still.“I’ll send you an address, we can meet there,” I said as Presley didn’t hang up.“It’s best I pick a location. Your brother probably has eyes everywhere,” she replied, and she was right. So I agreed and asked her to send me the address before hanging up.“There’s been a change. We’re going here,” I told one of the guards, since I had first given them the address of my penthouse.“Yes ma’am,” he said
