“Did he say 'the' Kian Lawley set you up?” Allison said, her words coming out breathless. I didn't reply. I ground my teeth, repeatedly counting my right fingers. “At least you won't be expelled. It's just a harmless prank, Natt.” “A harmless prank?! Allison, I was framed!” I said, slamming my locker shut. “Yes, but the frat boys always do this. Don't let it bother you so much. You could just get a forged prescription from the grocery store and you're off the hook.” I scoffed. “Seriously it's no big deal." "Kian's hot though, it's so unfair that he's -” I stopped listening, my brain taking me back to his annoying smile. I hate him. “What?” Allison echoed. It was then I realized I said that out loud. “I hate him, Allie." "Kian. He seems to think he owns this bloody dump of a school!” Allison's chuckles made me stare at her, my brows furrowing deeper. “I'm sorry, but he kind of does own the school. His father is the biggest donor of the school and he is the head of the biggest frat house, so yes, he does own this school,” She stated, raising her hands up in mock surrender. “It's not funny,” I stalked, trying to find my classes. Allison remained where she stood. “I guess that means you're not going to the party after school??” She called after me. Turning my head slightly, I flicked my middle finger at her. **************************************** As I walked back home, my mind raced with thoughts on how I could avoid this mess. Having a probe was too much of a big deal for a scholarship student. If I wasn't careful, I could be expelled. “They just had to rope me into their stupid pranks!” Pain shot up my legs, making me double over as I dashed my feet against a stone. “Fuck!” I gritted my teeth, and limped the rest of the way home. The area was eerily quiet. I walked over the lawn, skipping two steps to get to the door. It was slightly ajar. I paused, and looked around again. Taking in a deep breath, I opened the door further. “Mom?” I called out, dropping my bag on the worn out couch. No response. I listened for her usual groaning. “Mom! I'm back!” I called out again, then walked towards her room. A tiny groan came from her room. Once again, that familiar feeling of panic rose inside me. I quickened my pace, swinging the rickety door open, bursting into the room, to - “You took too long! Come help me find a dress to wear!” My mother sat in a heap of colourful looking dresses. Her hair was frizzy and sticking out in every which way. Her eyes were slightly unfocused, yet she had this glint of joy in them. “Mom, what's going on?” I sank down on her bed, shoving some clothes to the side. “I don't have time to explain now, just get ready! And help me get ready, we have somewhere very important to be.” She went back, digging through her pile of clothes. I looked around the room, and back at her. My eyes went down. “Today was the first day of senior year.” I whispered, then I lifted my head. She rolled her eyes, then joined her hands together. “Oh. Yes. Well, I hope it went well. You really need to get dressed.” Her voice tightened. “Mom, today is the first day of senior year, and I am already in trouble, and you have nothing to say to me?” My voice sounded shrill, and I hated it. I hated that I was still affected by her obvious lack of care towards me. She scoffed, then returned to the pile of clothes again “Aha! Look at this dress!” She held up a pink flowing dress, then threw it at me. “You could wear that. Our body size isn't so different. You do have a bit of a belly, so you-” “Please stop.” The fight went out of me in a sigh. “What are all these for?” She smiled, then stood up, swaying a bit. “We are moving tonight!” What? “What? Moving where?” “So, as you know, I am getting married soon so he-” I raised my hands and waved them furiously in the air. “Wait!!! Wait!! Wait!” The words coming fast. “Mom! You can not be serious. You're joking, you must be joking!” I paused, realization hitting me now. “Are you high again?” I asked, reducing the intensity of my voice. “I am not.” She snapped at me, stood up, and began pacing the room, kicking the clothes in her way. “Married to who? I've never met the man and now we are moving to his house? Mom, you must know how ridiculous it sounds!” I looked at her, my eyes following her every step, till she paused in front of me. "That's not my fault. He wants things done quickly so we are getting married this weekend. We're moving to his house today. This is final, and this discussion is over.” My eyes widened incredulously as I saw the glint of seriousness in her eyes. Silence stretched between us alongside the stubborn eye contact we held. “You must behave at your new home. Like I said, he is quite important, so you have to try to impress him.” She smiled again, then let out a squeal, clapping her hands like a child. I watched her in disbelief. “Who is this person? Who is the unlucky man willing to marry you?” Her head snapped. She shot me a venomous look. “Watch it, Natalie. I’m still your mother!” Barely. “Well?” I reiterated. “He is the CEO of Law's Pharmaceutical, and he-” I held up my hand, and let out a sharp breath. “Law's Pharmaceutical? So… he is…” “Yes. Joey Lawley.” My mother let out a content sigh. Fuck!!Natalie's pov The room spun.“And also, you would be introduced as the new member of the Lawley family in front of the press.”There it was.The way I died.I woke up with an overwhelming feeling of dread in my gut. It left a bitter taste in my mouth.I went through my morning routines robotically, not paying attention to any of the things I was doing.By the time I reached school, the feeling had turned into full blown terror.I couldn't tell if it was because of the engagement party happening tonight or something else. The second I stepped into the school hallway, I knew something was wrong. Deja Vu.Everyone was staring at me… just like last time.“Please just give me a break,” I whispered to myself. People were staring again, and it was not the casual kind of staring. It was full blown stares, quite different from the curious ones I got from the drug investigation. The whispers were louder as well, bits and pieces of conversations reached me, but they were not coherent enough
Natalie's pov “Yes… it is a merger.” I stood completely frozen. Those words... they hurt more than they should have, confirming what I always suspected. A merger. Not a marriage. What could Mr Lawley possibly want from my mother? The silence stretched, then Kian spoke again. His voice was quieter this time, soft like he was saying this to himself rather than the person on the other line.“...she's useful…”My throat tightened.I wasn't sure whether he meant my mother or myself.Neither possibility felt good. A few seconds later, he laughed again. That same cold laugh.“Trust me.”His voice carried clearly through the hallway.Something embarrassingly sharp settled inside my chest.Stupid.Stupid.Stupid.It echoed in my head over and over and over again. Kian ended the call and turned around.I stepped back immediately retreating into my room before he could see me, stumbling over my feet before going back to my previous spot on the bed.My pulse hammered, and my mouth grew bitter
Natalie's pov The folder sat on my dresser in the room that still felt too strange to be mine. I was at the edge of my bed, staring at it, and then at the message on my phone.‘If you value your scholarship, stop reading that file.’I knew exactly who it was from.It must be one of Kian's stupid pranks again. “He must think I'm a fool. If he believes this stupid text would scare me away, then he is mistaken.” I scoffed softly.Opening the folder, my eyes scanned through that strange page. I studied the shipment record, trying to make sense of the figures and what it meant.Nothing changed. The numbers remained numbers. The shipment codes remained just that - shipment codes. And the strange note scribbled at the bottom remained just as confusing as it had been an hour ago.I rubbed my eyes. Maybe I was overthinking it.Maybe it really was just some misplaced company document.Yet, I couldn't shake away the nervous knot that seemed to not want to leave my chest. My mind remembered K
Natalie's pov The shelf at the Dean's office was filled with awards and plaques… all in shades of brown and grey.I looked at the door, sighing inwardly to myself. My mind was already made up as to what to ask the dean.Where might he-“Quit acting like a trapped squirrel.” A voice snapped beside me.I clenched my jaw before turning to look at him. Kian was already looking at me, with a lazy smile on his face.“Ignore me, please,” I answered, rolling my eyes at him. An emotion flitted through his face, before it disappeared.“Trust me, I'd pay you to not breathe 5 feet close to me if I can,” he said, that aggravating smile still on his face. Before I could respond, the door swung open and in walked the associate Dean. His head was down, as he read a file he held.“Miss Mayers, Mr Lawley. Thank you for honouring my call,” he regarded us when he got to his desk, before sinking slowly into his chair.I decided to take my chances immediately with my request.“Can I change my partner?”
I scrunched up the letter, throwing it at the far end of my room.I was up and ready before 7am, not because I was heeding to the Kian's command. I was simply scared of offending Joey.Kian was bluffing anyways. I knew there was no way in hell that he'd be taking me in his car to school. When I stepped out of the mansion, Kian was there, leaning on his car, his face was a study in concentration, as he typed furiously on his phone. The moment he heard my footsteps, he looked up. That smug look returned.“Took you long enough.”I walked past him, heading towards the gates. There was no way I was going to school with him. Before I could take another step, he grabbed my arm, and pulled me close to him.My heart rate spiked, the thudding so loud I was certain he could hear it.“What are you doing?” I managed to let out, keeping my voice as steady as I could.“Behave. My dad is watching us,” he drawled, looking back to the house. I followed his eyes and truly, Joey stood there, at a balco
Natalie's pov That was it.I knew I wasn't going to let it slide this time.“Excuse me?” I asked, unable to help myself. My mother kicked me lightly underneath the table.I ignored her, I could feel my ears get hot. I clenched the spoon in my hands, trying to keep the emotion at bay.“You are well excused. Just as you'll soon be from the University.” Kian retorted. That lazy grin was back on his face. His eyes sharpened, as he watched me try and fail to control my emotions.“Big talk from the person who framed me. If I go down, you go down with me. I'll make certain of it.” I snapped. The dining room fell silent. My mother's fork clattered against her plate. Joey's eyes shifted between us slowly, yet there was no change in his expression.Kian merely leaned back in his chair. Relaxed, like he expected me to say that.“Interesting accusation.” He reached for his glass. “You usually threaten people before or after they're proven innocent?”“You know exactly what you did.”“Do I?”“Ye
Natalie's pov “Must I be there?” I muttered, my voice coming out small.True to her word, before the end of the day, I was roaming the halls of a building fit to be called a palace by the sheer ridiculousness of its size.My mother was also nowhere to be seen, and I was led into a room by a man wh
