Cassian

I stepped into my private sanctuary, and the heavy oak door closed behind me with a dull, echoing thud that cut off the cold winds of the northern corridor.

That was when the storm inside me finally broke loose.

It wasn't a slow, burning ember that I could manage with willpower. It wasn't the calculated, terrifying dominance I displayed in front of the elders or the pack enforcers. It exploded inside my chest without a second's warning—sharp, violent, and utterly barbaric, crashing through my ribcage like an unleashed monster breaking free from its iron chains.

I couldn't even pinpoint the exact moment I had lost control, and that terrifying lack of grip only fueled the inferno raging beneath my skin. I had faced every form of resistance known to our kind before today. I had stared into the eyes of dying Alpha rivals who cursed my bloodline with their final breaths. I had weathered mockery, bitter resentment, and open defiance from captives, rogues, and political enemies alike. None of it had ever mattered. None of it had ever left a scratch on the armor of my mind.

Yet the moment that broken, bloodied girl looked up at me from the sand of the arena and spat those three poisoned words...

'I hate you.'

Something deep inside my soul snapped clean in half.

The sound of her voice echoed relentlessly through the cavernous quiet of my mind, repeating over and over again like a dark mantra, stirring emotions I had no name for and no desire to feel. Fury tangled violently with something far darker, heavier, and completely unrecognizable. It wasn't just raw anger at her refusal to submit to my judgment. It was the intolerable, sickening fact that her hatred had actually reached me. That her broken, rasping voice had pierced my Alpha aura and touched a place beneath my ribs where she had no right to tread.

I scoffed loudly, the sound harsh, dry, and mocking in the silent gloom of the master suite.

My hands flew up to loosen the tight silver silk of my necktie. My fingers worked roughly, violently, snapping the delicate thread as if the fabric itself were an enemy trying to suffocate me. I yanked the tie free and hurled it onto the dark stone floor, then grabbed the collar of my tunic, ripping the buttons clean off as I tore the garment over my head. I tossed the ruined leather onto the velvet coverlet of my bed.

My chest rose and fell in sharp, ragged heave. My bare skin buzzed with the static electricity of restrained, lethal violence.

"How dare she?" I growled under my breath, my voice dropping into an animalistic snarl as I paced the length of the marble floorboards. "How dare that Crest filth look at me with those golden eyes and speak to me like that?"

My wolf stirred instantly in the deep recesses of my mind. His presence was a towering, silver-furred shadow, firm and unyielding against the chaotic storm of my emotions.

Calm yourself, Cassian, Mura's voice echoed through our mental link, deep, steady, and insufferably calm against my internal turmoil. You are letting a half-starved rogue unbalance you. She belongs to us. Her body, her breath, her mark—they are ours regardless of the bitter hatred festering in her heart.

I clenched my jaw so hard my molars groaned under the pressure, the veins along my neck bulging like thick iron cords.

"I know that!" I snapped back internally, my heavy boots striking the marble in a rapid, restless rhythm. "I know she is bound to us, Mura! But I am the Alpha! I am the ruler of the Pearl Bridge territory! I am the only one permitted to harbor hatred in this keep!"

My hands curled into massive, bone-crushing fists at my sides, my sharp claws extending just enough to scrape against the skin of my palms.

"She is a captive. She is our personal maid," I declared to the empty room, my tone leaving no room for argument. "She is permitted to harbor only devotion for me. Only submission. Only love..."

The absolute certainty of it rang through my blood like a sacred commandment. There was no room for negotiation in that truth. No space for her bitter rejection. No allowance for her defiant spirit to stand against four Alpha quadruplets. She was meant to be broken, reshaped, and conquered until her past was erased and her heart beat solely for us.

I stopped dead in my tracks directly in front of the floor-to-ceiling gilded mirror mounted on the northern wall.

My reflection stared back at me through the dim ambient light of the room. My eyes were pitch-black, swallowed entirely by Mura’s dark shadow. My jaw was locked tight, every corded line of my face carved from decades of ruthless control, dominance, and unyielding authority. Yet beneath that flawless mask of power, something dark and restless moved—a dangerous, feral hunger that refused to be satisfied by fifty lashes or iron chains. I studied my own reflection as though searching for answers within the glass, looking for clarity amid the suffocating chaos boiling in my chest.

And then, in the suffocating quiet of the room, it hit me.

The realization slid into place so smoothly, so seamlessly, that it felt as inevitable as the rising of the moon.

A slow, terrifying smile tugged at the corner of my lips, cold, predatory, and absolute. The wild rage inside my blood didn't fade; it reshaped itself, condensing and sharpening into a singular, dark purpose. Absolute control settled back into my veins like liquid mercury, steady, intoxicating, and lethal.

"Watch yourself, Elena," I whispered to the dark glass, my voice dropping into a low, resonant rumble that vibrated through the floorboards. "You think your hatred makes you strong. You think your defiance will protect you. But I will tear that hatred from your soul... and I will force you to love me."

The promise lingered heavily in the quiet air of the chamber, thick, unyielding, and binding, as my dark eyes gleamed with cold, relentless intent.

I remained still, watching my own reflection in the mirror, my eyes fixed on the glass as the heavy iron mechanism of the double doors behind me disengaged with a long, mechanical hiss.

In an instant, the suffocating atmosphere of the room shifted.

A radiant, slender figure stepped through the threshold, illuminated by the corridor torches behind her. Her sudden presence was like a blinding burst of sunlight crashing into a pitch-black cavern. Looking at her through the mirror's reflection, I felt the sharp, jagged edges of my violent temper—the dark, suffocating frustration that had been tearing at my ribs only moments prior—begin to soften and melt away like ice over fire. The cold, lethal tension in my shoulders was replaced by a sudden, intense rush of genuine warmth that only one person in this entire fortress could ever evoke.

It was Vanessa.

To the rest of the pack, to the elders and the servants, she was merely Anabel's closest childhood companion—a high-born lady of a allied bloodline who shared our halls. But to my brothers and me, she was far more than that; she was the cherished sister of our hearts, a delicate rose blooming in a fortress made of war and iron. Ever since she was a small, laughing child running through the courtyards, she had been an inseparable fixture in our lives, clinging to my cloak and following my brothers and me as if she had been born from our very bloodline. In a life defined by betrayal, territorial wars, and endless political bloodshed, she had been the one pure, untainted constant in our world.

She didn't hesitate for a single second upon seeing me stripped to the waist and breathing heavy.

Without a word of caution, she hurried across the dark marble floor, her light, delicate footsteps making no sound against the stone, and threw her soft frame toward me. She wrapped her slender arms around my waist from behind, her embrace tight, fierce, and desperate, as if she were trying to anchor her gentle soul to my dark, towering frame.

As she pressed her face firmly against the muscles of my bare back, I felt the familiar, intoxicating sensation of her touch. It sent a sudden, electric jolt straight through my nervous system—a magnetic, primal pull that tested every single thread of my carefully masterminded self-control.

The dark temptation surged through my veins once again—that dark, primal, forbidden urge that had been tormenting me for months. The sudden, wild urge to spin around in the dark, wrap my heavy arms around her waist, lift her off her feet, and pull her underneath me on the velvet covers right then and there. I wanted to claim that pure, radiant light for myself. I wanted to devour her gentleness and make her mine forever.

But the harsh, unyielding reality of the pack law—and her innocent youth—held me back like an iron leash.

She was still seventeen. That singular, damning number felt like an agonizing, impenetrable wall standing between us—a legal and moral barrier I was forced to respect, no matter how fiercely my blood burned.

However, the agonizing wait was finally reaching its end. In just three short days, when the full moon reached its crest, she would finally turn eighteen. I could already feel the dark, feverish anticipation humming through every vein in my body. I was already coordinating with the pack stewards to host the grandest banquet the northern territories had ever seen in her honor; it would be a celebration unlike any other in our history—a massive, public declaration of her permanent, indisputable importance in my life and in this keep.

Yet, even as I lifted my hands and laid them over her delicate fingers, a dark, suffocating shadow crossed my mind.

For years, I had secretly harbored a desperate wish, praying to the Moon Goddess in the quiet hours of the night that when Vanessa turned eighteen, the ancestral bond would spark between us—that she would be revealed as my true, fated mate. But reality had finally crashed down upon me over the past few days with a cold, unforgiving clarity: she wasn't. The ancient, soul-binding thread I craved wasn't there. The universe had given my mate bond to someone else—to a broken, bleeding Crest rogue lying in the dirt of the servant's quarters.

I let out a heavy, ragged sigh, the crushing weight of that realization pressing down on my chest like lead as I stared at our joined reflections in the dark glass.

Vanessa's presence had successfully quieted the violent temper that Elena had ignited, but her soft embrace had inadvertently stoked a completely different kind of fire within me. The dangerous heat circulating through my blood—a volatile mixture of bottled-up Alpha frustration, possessive hunger, and the raw physical desire Vanessa's touch had stirred—needed an immediate outlet. It was a suffocating pressure that demanded to be unleashed, and as I gently unclasped Vanessa's delicate hands from my waist and turned around to face her, only one name flashed through my darkened mind.

Elena.

She was my personal maid. She was a rogue whose very existence in this keep was granted solely by my mercy. Her body, her life, and her breath belonged to me. It was only fitting, I reasoned with a cold, detached cruelty, that she should be the one to serve all of my needs. If the Goddess had denied me the gentle mate I had prayed for, then I would take my solace, my revenge, and my pleasure from the defiant, golden-eyed captive whose duty it was to obey my every command.

A sly, predatory smirk curved the corners of my lips as I smoothed Vanessa's hair and prepared to send her back to her chambers.

"Let's see how long you keep hating me now, Elena," I whispered silently to the dark room, my eyes narrowing as I prepared to claim what was mine.

I groaned, pulling a bruised arm up to shield my eyes, my breath coming in shallow, ragged puffs of frustration as consciousness dragged me back from the dark void.I sat up abruptly—and froze. The room was silent, crisp, and unnervingly precise. The mattress beneath me was firm and narrow; the stone walls rose in clean, gray lines that pressed inward, giving the space a controlled, clinical feeling. An unadorned wardrobe stood pushed tightly against the corner, and a single wooden chair sat perfectly centered against the far wall. There was no scent of mold or rot here. It smelled of cedarwood, ozone, and fresh slate.Memories flooded my mind in sudden, brutal flashes—the four monstrous wolves in the moonlight, the crunch of my spine against the tree, iron chains, and four dark brothers declaring me their mate and personal maid.I am in the stronghold of the Quadruplet Alphas.Panic rising
