My heart beats hard. Alpha Lukas lets go of me, but I can feel his eyes lingering on me.
“Smile,” he leans down to whisper like he hadn't just threatened me, his lip grazing my ear. I shiver, looking up at the audience gathered.
There are at least a hundred, filling the small room, beta enforcers lined at every door, and everyone is watching. I feel lightheaded. Lukas's hand rests on the small of my back, cold and grounding as he leads me forward.
I force a smile on my face. He nods at Malric and Calista, who grin and clap like they're on the moon. Seated next to Malric, surrounded by beta wolves, my eyes meet the Alpha King, Eldan Montclair—Lukas's father. Our gazes lock. Something in me shifts, a feeling like he's someone I should know… someone dangerous. He gives me a cold smile.
I quickly look away, fear pounding in my chest. I should run, my insides scream. This is a trap.
Lukas's hand moves to my waist, like he can sense my thoughts. “Relax,” he mutters in a low drawl.
“...relax.”
The word sounds familiar. I picture the stranger from last night, the blurred kid running through a field. The memory hits me again like a boulder.
It's all I can do to keep my feet under me. Lukas's hand tightens around me. Murmurs pass through the crowd.
“Get your act together, or someone is going to pay for it,” this time, his voice is harsh.
I gulp, the air suddenly feeling cold.
We reach the altar, where an old gamma wolf in a white robe is waiting to bound me to Lukas forever.
“Today, we witness the mating ceremony of Alpha Lukas and our future Luna.” The pack elder, Avenor, steps forward.
He has a scroll in his hands. The vows. The elder clears his throat, and the pavilion falls deadly silent.
“Under the gaze of the Bloodmoon, alpha and mate are bound. Let the pack witness.” His voice carries across the grand hall. Malric and Calista are literally at the edge of their seats.
There's nothing romantic about it, only a deadly chill. I want to close my eyes, to run, but I lost that chance last night.
The elder steps forward, opening the scroll. “Alpha Lukas, do you claim this mate before the pack?”
Lukas's gaze doesn't leave me. I don't dare breathe under his intense stare. When he speaks, it's a cold and commanding seal to my fate. ‘I claim her. Her voice, her scent, her silence. All mine to guard and command.”
“Elena Graymoor,”
My head reels.
“Do you accept the alpha's claim?”
“I…” I hesitate. The pack watches. Lukas's hand tightens on my waist.
I go over the countless times I rehearsed this with the tutor. Everything I needed to be a submissive alpha's mate.
“I accept.”
The rest of Avenor's words are drowned out by the loud ringing in my head.
I feel like a ghost through the rest of the ceremony. I don't take note of anything. I remember Alpha Lukas leading me out after the congratulatory messages.
My fingers tremble as we step into the car. I know what's next.
Alpha Lukas will mark me, sealing our vow under the full moon.
Tonight, I will belong to him.
We arrive at the Montclair mansion. Lukas steps out, not sparing me a glance. I stumble out of the car. The mansion feels cold and deadly. The three omega wolves from earlier meet me in the halls. I spot Lukas, some few feet away, talking with his beta wolf.
“Take her to her chambers,” he turns, instructing the omegas. His eyes lock on mine, scanning me head to toe.
His beta whispers something in his ears and he nods before walking off.
“This way, Luna,” one of the girls bows, leading me forward. I follow behind them. They're not much older than me. Half an hour ago, we were all omegas.
My chambers are huge, opening into a huge bedroom. I can't bring myself to appreciate the grandeur. Not when everything has already fallen apart. They leave a white nightgown on the hanger and a cup of hot chocolate on the table.
“The alpha will send for you,” one of them says as they file out, closing the door softly after them.
I sit at the edge of the bed, clutching the cup of chocolate with both hands. It's supposed to calm me down, to bring down my nerves, but all I can feel is the chill creeping up my spine as I wait.
The minutes pass by. The door stays closed. No one came to summon me.
Slowly, my eyes grow heavy with drowsiness. My stomach felt empty. Maybe he isn't coming... It feels too good to be true, but relief floods through me either way.
Maybe he didn't care enough to consummate our bond. Those are my last thoughts as I drift off to sleep.

When morning comes, however, it doesn't make sense. I sit up, staring at the other side of the bed, the sheets unruffled. Alpha Lukas didn't show up.
A knock sounds on the door.
“Come in.”
There's only one of the omega wolves this time. "Luna," she stands at the door, her head lowered.
Under the bright light, or perhaps with my mind more focused, I notice the servant's uniform: a white apron over a deep blue gown, her hair held back in a ponytail. I make out her name tag quite clearly. Bianca.
“Breakfast will soon be ready. You're required to come down.”
“What happened last night?” I ask, standing up.
She doesn't reply.
“Please,” I move closer to her, watching in horror as she steps back. “Please, I need to know.”
She hesitates. “The mating ceremony ended. A few important families were here to congratulate the alpha.”
“And after that?” I probe.
“Alpha Lukas added some names to the selection for the rogue mission.”
My blood runs cold. Dread fills my stomach. I swallow hard. “Who?”
She doesn't meet my gaze. “Tess Hale.”
Damien’s POV“What can I do for you? Are you sure royalty like you should be in a dirty place like this?”The man says again, clearly trying to get on my skin. But I’m past that stage in my life where silly words get the best of me.I smile. “I’m here to discuss business.”He smirks. “Business? From how I know it, I believe you’ve lost your fighters and your brother’s army is onto you, trying to cut you down. Are you sure you’re still up for business?”My jaw tightens. Words related to travel first because how the hell did he even hear something like that?“Well, not everything you hear is true. You should know this by now.”He comes closer to me. “While that may be true, I would also like you to know that I’m not an idiot. I mean, I know you see me as one. A strong good for nothing idiot. But trust me, I’m much more than that.”I squint my eyes. “ And what makes you think that I see you like that?”He smirks. “It is written on your face. You’re only here talking to me because you hav
Damien’s POVWith Vale and Tess gone, the leadership and management of the group falls solely on Elena and me. This makes me realize how sharing duty actually makes life easier for everyone. Not that the people are difficult to manage alone but there’s a lot of factors that make you realize sharing is the most important. The meeting day with the rogues finally and Elena and I made our way over with a few guards leaving Taren in charge.“How do you think this is going to go? Do you have any hope of positivity?” Elena asks.I turn to her, looking blankly.“Honestly, I have no idea, but I hope it turns out well. We really need it, Elena. If we are going to have any chance, we need their help and compliance.”She sighs. “At least you’ve got hope. At least you’re not being pessimistic.”“What do you mean?” I ask, squinting my brows. She let out another sigh. “I’m trying to control it, Damien. I swear, I’m really trying to control it, but I can’t help but feel none of this is going to wo
Damien. I find myself at the foot of the mountain, overlooking the ocean below. My mind sub travels back to what just happened a few minutes ago. Vale, declaring his love publicly to his woman. I am beyond happy for him. In this line of life, every opportunity of happiness has to be taken because it is not every time we are fortunate to experience things like that. And to think it is my best friend of all people, it makes everything so much more interesting. I hear footsteps behind me and I don’t need to look back to know who it is. Him. “Hey, man,” he says, shoving me on the back. I turn slightly, smiling. “Hey, lover boy” I draw teasingly. He smiles. “Yeah, whatever. I know you’ve been dying to say that.” “And I know you’ve been dying for me to say that.” We both laugh. “But thank you, love is a beautiful thing. Now I know what you’ve been feeling with Elena.” As soon as it says this, I go still. My mind goes back to that short moment we shared in the hall. “I think i
Elena’s POV As we prepare for the meeting with the rogues, we still have a few hours left so we continue to use it to just catch up. Then, Vale rises to his feet, face looking serious as if he has something important to share. “Man, what’s up?” Damien asks. He smiles. “I have something important to say.” This draws everyone’s attention, including Tess. Then, his eyes turn to her. She quickly looks away and I notice the shyness on her face. I nudge her shoulder. “Girl, you’re so red. Will you calm down?” I say teasingly. She rolls her eyes jokingly. “Oh, Elena, stop teasing me.” I smile. “You know I’m not teasing you. The guy literally has his eyes on you and you’re burning red. What conclusion do you expect me to draw?” She looks at me. “Just stop. He probably just wants to talk about the meeting with the rouges.” “Yeah, right. You really expect me to believe that, don’t you?” “Well I expect you to stop thinking about it. It’s nothing,” she replies, still smiling. I drop
Damien’s POVWe travel for a few nights, some of us always break to make sure no strange person is following our movements. So far, we have nothing like that and I just hope it continues to remain that way.As we travel, I can’t help but to notice the little body language between Vale and Tess.I have been suspecting that there’s something there but the man is literally being secretive with me. Until now because I can’t take it anymore. When she goes back to Elena, I shove his shoulder a little, drawing his attention.“Okay, man, do you have something to tell me?” I ask quietly. He looks at me, squinting his eyes, as if trying to understand what I’m saying.“Oh my goodness, don’t you dare pretend with me? I know you have something to say.”He shakes his head. “I really don’t know what you’re talking about. If you have something you want me to say, why don’t you just ask?”The question comes out genuinely so I know he really probably doesn’t know what I’m on about. I decide to just as
Elena’s POVAfter the pleasantries, five of us sit at a round table to discuss everything that has happened so far.“But when we came here, no one came out,” Taren says.Vale nods. “Yes. It was because we didn’t hear any familiar voices.”“Oh.”“So what really happened?” Damien asks.Vale sighed. “It’s a long story. We were all just sitting around when we heard the noise.”I squint my eyes. “Noise? What noise are you talking about?”He stares at me. “The Bloodmoon guards. They followed us down here.”My breath catches mid-air.“What?” Damien quickly asks.“Exactly. We are also surprised. It had been at least a few days since our last battle, and they never showed up after that. Not even during our trip down here. So we were very surprised when they caught us unaware.”“Wait, are you suggesting that someone ratted you guys out? Like there’s a mole amongst us?”We all look around each other before I speak up. “I don’t think so. We all know what we are doing, we know what we are going th
