CLARK’S POV

For a full second, I stood still just staring at her.

Eva.

In a hotel robe too big for her.

Barefoot.

Eyes soft with worry and something that looked like fear or maybe longing.

And her voice…

“I can’t sleep.”

It hit something deep and unguarded inside me.

I opened the door wider.

“Come in.”

She stepped inside slowly, like she wasn’t sure if she was allowed.

She shouldn’t be allowed but I closed the door anyway.

Her fingers tugged nervously at the robe belt and she wouldn’t look at me.

I took a slow breath.

“Nightmares?”

“A little.”

“What else?” I asked as she hesitated.

Her chest rose and fell quicker.

“I don’t… I don’t like being alone in a strange place,” she finally whispered.

“It makes my mind noisy.”

Her voice cracked on the last word.

And that was it….that tiny crack…that tiny vulnerability.

It broke every barrier I had left.

“Sit,” I said gently.

She lowered herself onto the edge of the bed, legs curled under her, robe falling loosely around her knees.

Her skin glowed under the warm lights, hair messy from tossing and turning.

I sat in the chair opposite her, putting a deliberate distance between us.

“Do you want to talk?” I asked.

She shook her head.

“Not really.”

“Do you want silence?”

She nodded.

And so we sat…just breathing the same air.

The silence wasn’t empty…it was thick, heavy, charged.

Her eyes kept darting to me, then away.

My own restraint felt like a rope burning in my palms.

After a long stretch, she finally whispered,

“Thank you… for earlier.”

“For debunking the rumor?”

“For not letting me panic.”

I leaned back.

“I told you….It won’t be your fault. Ever.”

She looked at me…her eyes were big and soft and full of something I didn’t want to name.

“Why do you get so… protective?” she whispered.

Because you’re trouble for me in ways I can’t explain….because your sadness affects me..because I care more than I should.

I badly wanted to say it but I swallowed hard.

“You’re under my responsibility,” I said carefully.

“It’s natural.”

She scoffed.

“You’re lying.”

My jaw tightened.

“Eva..”

“People don’t look at their soon to be sister in laws the way you look at me,” she said quietly.

That pulled the air from my lungs.

Her voice… her honesty…

It disarmed me.

“Eva,” I said low,

“you’re misunderstanding…”

“No,” she cut in gently,

“You are.”

Her courage startled me every damn time.

She moved slightly closer on the bed…barely an inch, but I felt it like gravity shifting.

“I know when someone cares,” she whispered.

The room felt smaller, hotter and unbearably intimate.

I forced myself to stay still.

“You should sleep,” I said finally, voice tight.

“It’s late.”

She nodded slowly but didn’t move.

“Can I stay here for a bit?” she asked.

It was a simple question but yet a dangerous one.

“Eva…”

“I won’t come close,” she whispered quickly.

“I just… feel safer here.”

The irony wasn’t lost on me.

I was the one she needed protection from.

Still, I nodded.

“All right…for a little while.”

She gave a small relieved sigh and curled on her side, still at the very edge of the bed, facing away from me, hugging a pillow.

I remained in the chair, watching her breathing slow… steady… peaceful.

Minutes passed.

There was something strangely calming about it.

Her vulnerability.

Her trust.

Two things no one ever gave me easily.

Eventually, her voice floated into the quiet.

“Clark?”

“Hmm?”

“Are you ever lonely?” she asked as my heart stalled.

What kind of question was that?

I opened my mouth to deflect but for once, I didn’t.

“Yes,” I said softly.

“Sometimes.”

She shifted under the blanket.

“Me too.”

“Go to sleep, Eva.”

She didn’t reply.

But after a few minutes, she whispered so softly I almost missed it,

“You don’t have to be lonely.”

My head snapped up.

“What?”

But she was quiet.

Breathing deep.

Slow.

Fast asleep.

I stood, walking toward the bed slowly, even though I had no reason to.

Her eyelashes lay softly against her cheeks.

Her lips slightly parted.

Her hand rested near the empty space beside her.

An ache formed in my chest.

I brushed her hair gently away from her face.

She didn’t wake.

She only sighed and curled into the pillow like she wished it was something..or someone else.

I stepped back quickly.

I knew I needed sleep, I needed distance and I needed….

A soft buzz cut through the silence.

My phone lit up from the desk.

A message.

From Rachel.

Eva’s sister.

Rachel:

Are you awake? We need to talk….It’s important….It’s about Eva.

My stomach dropped.

And before I could even respond, another message came in.

One that froze the blood in my veins.

Rachel:

Don’t tell her I messaged you….Just answer me..Does she seem… attached to you?

I looked toward the bed.

At Eva.

Sleeping in my room.

In my bed.

In a robe.

After saying I didn’t have to be lonely.

My throat tightened.

Another message appeared instantly.

Rachel:

Clark, please.

I need to know before I do something I can’t undo.

Undo?

Undo what?

Before I could type a single word, she sent one more message.

A short one.

A terrifying one.

Rachel:

She can’t fall for you….Do you understand? She can’t because you are mine.

My hand froze around the phone.

My heart rate increased….as my heart thundered in my chest.

What was Rachel thinking and why the cryptic messages.

Then Eva shifted slightly in the bed, her voice soft, unconscious:

“Clark…”

I turned sharply toward her.

And everything inside me twisted.

  • FORBIDDEN DESIRES    CHAPTER TWENTY SEVEN

CLARK’S POVThe room felt too small after Rachel’s words.Eva is engaged.I sat there, staring at my desk, my eyes unfocused. The broken pen lay between my fingers, ink slowly staining my skin, but I barely noticed. What made me more angry was the fact that she was extremely excited about the news which she just shared.Rachel was still standing in front of me, watching my face like she was waiting for permission to breathe.“Clark?” she called softly. “Did you hear me?”I looked up at her...as a matter of fact, I glared at her.She was still smiling….that polite, practiced smile she always wore in public. The one that said everything is fine, even when it clearly wasn’t.“You said Eva is engaged,” I replied slowly.“Yes,” she nodded. “Daniel proposed…Isn’t that… good news?”Good news.I stood up abruptly, my chair scraping loudly against the floor as Rachel flinched."Rachel??" "Yes baby." “Why are you still here?” I asked. Her brows furrowed. “I came to talk to you….About the

  • FORBIDDEN DESIRES    CHAPTER TWENTY SIX

CLARK’S POVThe first thing I felt was anger. Not the loud kind but the quiet one that sits in your chest and burns slowly.Eva’s face kept replaying in my head as I walked out of the restaurant… the shock, the restraint, the disappointment. She didn’t yell, she didn’t cry as she simply chose herself. That hurt more than the water she poured on me and to be honest, I really didn't know what came over me.Seeing her together with that sorry excuse of a man she called her boyfriend made me extremely jealous and furious.I didn’t know where I was going when I stepped into the night. My phone buzzed several times…Rachel, my assistant, even my driver but I ignored all of it.Immediately Eva walked out of the restaurant, Rachel started her usual tantrums and I was definitely not in the mood for that and so I just got up and walked away. I walked until my legs hurt even when I knew very well I had a car and then I saw a bar.The sign flickered like it had lived a hard life, and something

  • FORBIDDEN DESIRES    CHAPTER TWENTY FIVE

EVA’S POVThe click of the bathroom lock echoed louder than it should have.I turned slowly, my heart pounding as Clark leaned against the door like he owned the space and maybe, in that moment, he did.He didn’t rush me.That was the dangerous part. His eyes travelled over me slowly, lazily, like he had all the time in the world. The corner of his lips lifted in a faint smile. The least I expected to enter the bathroom with me was Clark.…a female bathroom as a matter of fact was Clark.“What are you doing here Clark?? Get out!!!" "Why should I??”"Because first this is a female bathroom?? Are you a pervert??!!”"Oh trust me if I was a pervert you would know.”“Clark, what are you fucking doing here??!! Get out!!!" “So,” he said calmly, breaking the silence.“That’s the kind of man you choose now?”I folded my arms. “Open the door, Clark.”He chuckled softly. “You didn’t answer my question.”“Because it doesn’t deserve an answer.”He straightened and took a step toward me. “Dani

EVA’S POV"You are out of your damn mind!!”My heart was still racing when Clark said those words.“I am not Eva…I know what I want and I don’t want to marry Rachel anymore.”I stared at him like he had just spoken in another language. As much as I cared more than I should for Clark, there were some certain things that were never meant to be or happen as much as I badly wanted it.“Clark… no,” I said immediately, shaking my head. “You can’t say that.”He stepped closer. “I just did.”I took a step back. “You shouldn’t even be here saying this to me……you are to get married soon..what are you saying???.”“I had to.” he replied. “I’m tired of pretending.”“That doesn’t change anything,” I said firmly. “In fact, it makes everything worse.”He frowned. “Why?”“Because I finally realized how serious this is ” I said. “Your mother invited Rachel…That alone tells me this is bigger than feelings.”“My mother invited her but you came along!! And besides she doesn’t even like Rachel,” he

  • FORBIDDEN DESIRES    CHAPTER TWENTY THREE

EVA'S POVI thought I was dreaming. That was the first thing that crossed my mind when I saw him on his knees in front of me.Daniel.My ex-boyfriend.The same man who once promised me forever and then disappeared from my life like I meant nothing. The same man who blocked me on every social media platform, ignored my calls, and pretended I never existed after breaking my heart.I blinked once.Twice.He was still there.“Eva,” he said, his voice breaking. “I still love you.”My heart pounded violently against my chest. For a brief second, I truly believed I had finally lost my mind. Maybe exhaustion had finally caught up with me or maybe loneliness had decided to play tricks on my heart. But when he reached out and held my hand, I knew this was real.I pulled my hand away immediately and suddenly burst into laughter.I was so sure that at that moment, I looked like a maniac laughing like that.“Why are you laughing Eva??? Are you that excited to see me??" “No,” I said sharply. “

  • FORBIDDEN DESIRES    CHAPTER TWENTY TWO

CLARK’S POVThe trip ended quietly.Too quietly. No scandals..No headlines and no pictures.Just the kind of silence that follows chaos when everything looks calm on the outside, but something underneath is already cracked. As soon as we landed back home, I felt the weight return to my chest. Work waited, the wedding waited, Life waited. And Rachel followed. She didn’t even ask.I noticed her car behind mine the moment I left the airport. At first, I told myself it was a coincidence but by the third turn, I knew it wasn’t.When I finally pulled into my house and stepped out, she was already getting out of her car, arms folded, lips pressed tight.“What are you doing here, Rachel?” I asked, keeping my voice low.“I followed you,” she said plainly, like it was nothing.“That much is obvious.”She frowned. “Why are you talking to me like that?”“Because you had no business following me to a business trip.” I said sharply. “And you have no business following me home unannounced.”Her
