Cassie's POV

It seemed I had bitten a lot more than I could chew. I had underestimated just how famous Ledger was. Everywhere I turned, whispers followed. My name was on people's lips, but never in ways I liked. Maybe getting involved with him, even fake involved, was not worth it.

This could ruin everything I had worked for. As a journalism student, I could not afford a scandal. I could not afford to be another girl in a hockey player’s story.

“What are you thinking so hard about?”

The sound of his voice snapped me back to the present. He had been watching me pace back and forth for a while now. “Nothing.”

“Nothing,” I replied, too fast.

Ledger hummed, clearly not buying it. “That’s obviously not true. Why don’t you tell me what’s running through that pretty brain of yours?”

I exhaled, pinching the bridge of my nose. “I never should have played along with you last night,” I muttered. “I should have shut you down the second you opened your mouth and called me your girlfriend. This whole thing was a mistake.”

Ledger frowned. “If you’re worried about the rumours…”

“I am worried about the consequences of the rumours,” I snapped. “Not all of us walk around campus with a fan club and a get-out-of-jail-free card.”

I folded my arms, pacing again.

“This could wreck my reputation. My career. You get to joke through it, but I am the one who gets branded.”

“It won't.” He responded almost immediately. The certainty in his voice gave me pause. I looked up, watching him intently.

“You cannot promise that,” I said.

“Actually, I can,” he replied, full of that annoying confidence. “Rumours like this fade. People get bored. But if they don’t, we handle it.”

I raised a brow. “Handle it? How exactly?”

Ledger tilted his head, grinning. “Well, I have not thought that far ahead.”

I rolled my eyes.

“But my offer from last night still stands,” he continued, suddenly serious. The teasing smirk I had come to expect was gone. “If you are that worried about your reputation, maybe you can stick around just long enough to get a front-page exposé.”

The corner of his mouth tugged upward again.

“How about it, Monroe? Use me to get your revenge. In return, you make me look good, and I get to clean up my image.”

I paused. It was a bold suggestion, but not a terrible one. We both stood to gain. If we did this right, he would impress the scouts, and I would have the byline of the year.

“Well, since Otto never told anyone about us, it means someone who knew started the rumour,” I said, narrowing my eyes. “Jade was the only one I told. Did you tell anyone?”

Ledger nodded. “I told my best friend, Freddie. And I trust him. So it is between the traitorous ex and the fake bestie.”

I laughed before I could stop myself. The sound came out light, too light. Ledger’s grin widened like it was the first win of the day.

I cleared my throat, instantly regretting how easy it had been to slip.

“Anyway, I would not rule out Freddie,” I said.

Ledger’s brow creased. “Why not?”

“Because if Jade could betray her best friend, then no one is off-limits.” I said. Though I was bitter about it, I didn't want Ledger to go through the same thing I had.

“He's different, but as you wish.” He said with a shrug. “I’ll include him to the list of suspects if only to clear his name.”

I nodded. It made sense.

“So?” Ledger prompted. “Will you accept my offer?”

I hesitated.

If I ignored everything, the whispers, the risks, the knot in my chest, I could admit that the idea was solid. Practical, even.

I gazed into his eyes, trying to read them. But, it was a mistake. The intensity within his eyes was too much and I found myself turning away in an instant. “Fine. I’ll do it. But we keep it clean. No surprises.”

Ledger beamed, and it was the brightest smile I had ever seen. Suddenly, he leapt forward and I was in the air. He had lifted me by my waist and was spinning me around the rooftop. “Hey, cut it out!” I yelled, annoyed.

He simply laughed. After another spin, he set me down, his hands on my waist.

But Ledger didn't let go immediately. I knew it was totally harmless. He was just holding on till I was stable once more, but I couldn't help but notice just how close we were. Our noses were almost touching. Heat seeped through his hands where he held me.

“Are you alright? You looked a little flushed.” His voice was quiet.

I looked up and he had that teasing smile in place. It was enough to snap me out of it. I placed my hand on his chest and shoved him backwards, trying not to dwell on how firm it was.

Ledger stumbled backwards with a chuckle. Ugh, what an insufferable ass.

“We’re done here, right?” I turned to leave without waiting for a response.

“Wait, where are you going?” He called after me.

“Anywhere without you in it!” I replied.

“That defeats the purpose of our relationship, Monroe!” He pointed out. “We need to plan ahead, get our stories straight.”

I stopped, my hand pausing on the door knob. I didn't want to admit it, but he was right.

“Fine.” I answered, turning on my heel. I didn't want to spend any more time than necessary with Ledger, but we had to cover our bases. “Let's get this over with. I have classes to attend.” Nevermind that I was already tardy.

Judging by the smug look he shot me, Ledger already knew that, but he said nothing.

“Alright, first of all… We need a story that covers how we first met…” He began.

And that moment marked the beginning of my fake relationship with the Captain of our prestigious hockey team. Nothing could have prepared me for the roller coaster ahead.

  • Fake Dating With The Playboy hockey Captain   Chapter 30

Cassie's POV Ledger tensed up beside me. I wasn't expecting the absolute look of devastation that appeared on his face. He looked as if someone had stabbed him and twisted the knife. What had his Dad meant by that?“Ledger, are you okay?” I asked softly. Before he could respond, his sister spoke up. Dorothy, if I remembered correctly. She had the kind of presence that didn’t wait for permission to speak.“What are you looking so red faced about?” His sister commented. “Shouldn't you be used to his manner of speaking by now?”Ledger blew out a breath. “You're right.”“As usual.” Dorothy added with a smirk. “Nothing new there.”The Rivers family was certainly filled with peculiar characters. “In any case, you've got quite the mouth on you.” She said, shifting her attention to me. “Cassie Monroe, right? Looks like baby bro picked the right girl this time.”“Ugh, you and Alison need to stop calling me that.” Ledger said.“Sure, sure. Anyway, see you around, guys.” Dorothy said with a wav

Ledger's POV Cassie had barely stepped out when the air in the room shifted. Heavy. Cold. The kind of silence that weighed on your chest.I kept my face unreadable. Couldn’t afford to look weak. Not now.Gary, Noah, and a few others had quietly stood, falling back to give space at the table. My family didn’t need an invite—they moved like they owned the place. Probably thought they still did.Liam looked around with his usual sneer. “Such a warm welcome, wouldn’t you say, Dorothy?” he said, voice dipped in sarcasm. “Feels more like we broke in.”Alison didn’t even flinch. “Maybe if you called ahead, your welcome wouldn’t feel so... invasive.”His jaw tensed. “How dare you—”“That’s enough,” Dorothy cut in, cool and sharp.Of course, Liam backed off. He always did when she spoke. Dorothy was the eldest, the one he listened to—when he listened to anyone at all.Speaking of Dorothy, she had her usual blank face on today. Her silence coupled with Father's silence only served to intensify

Cassie's POVLedger was much faster than I thought he would be. Not to mention the annoying moves he made to get away from me, like sliding on the tiles and leaping over tables and couches. In the end, the aroma of the food had gotten so strong that I had almost given up on chasing him. But then he let me catch up to him.“Jeez, you're a hard one to catch.” I said, panting slightly.“Now that I'm here, what are you going to do with me?” There was a teasing smile on his face as he said this. In an instant, Ledger covered the distance and wrapped one hand around the spatula. With a sharp tug, he pulled me for a kiss. He deepened the kiss and I couldn't help but melt against him.“You guys, the food is gonna grow cold at this rate.” Kylian said in a loud voice. We pulled away slowly. “We should go join them.” I whispered.“Yeah…”Suddenly, my stomach growled, interrupting the moment. I rolled my eyes while Ledger laughed lightly. With our hands linked, we walked back to the dining roo

Cassie's POV “Here.” Whitney called, holding out a steaming cup.I gently took the cup from her. “Thank you. What's this though?”“Peppermint and ginger tea.” She answered with an easy smile. “Should help with the hangover.”“Oh, thank you.” I repeated, bringing the cup to my lips.“Ah, don't drink it just yet.” She cautioned. “Let it cool a little.”“Yes, ma'am.” I said, lowering the cup and placing it on the counter. My gaze flickered towards Ledger who was busy cooking with his sister's help. He was wearing nothing but an apron and boxers. I couldn't help but stare and keep my gaze lingering on him a little longer.“I can't remember the last time Ledger stepped into this kitchen.” Whitney stated, causing me to reluctantly pull my gaze away from Ledger's toned arms. “I don't think he's ever made a meal for everyone either.”“Really? He seems to know what he's doing though.” I pointed out. The way he moved around the kitchen was as though he'd done so several times.“Ah, that's pro

Cassie's POV I shifted my attention from Ledger's hand to his face. He wore a look of curiosity. “I—I don't know…” I admitted.“Think about it.”I pressed my lips together. Let the silence stretch for a second. Maybe two. “I guess… I didn’t want our time to end just yet.” I finally said. “And since I decided to just do what I want, I did just that.” He paced around for a bit.“I see…” Was all he said. “I should do the same.”I raised a brow, snorting. “Please. Like you weren't already doing just that.”Ledger shook his head, his countenance serious. “Not really.” His voice was lower now. Serious. “Not when it comes to this.”He turned to face me fully.“I’m gonna give you a chance to walk away,” he said. “You can leave. Go home. Call it off. Whatever you want.”“Ledger—”“Because if you stay,” he cut in, “I won’t be pretending anymore. I won’t be fake smiling or playing a role. Everything I do, everything I say… it’ll be real. From this point on, it’s all me.”“What are you saying?”

  • Fake Dating With The Playboy hockey Captain   Chapter 25

Cassie's POVI would have laughed if I didn't think his house keepers would misinterpret it. Though taking care of his bruises was just a ruse, it occurred to me that I had offered help to someone who had so many people who could do so.“You're welcome, Miss Cassie.” One of them said, it was a woman that seemed to be in her mid thirties. She…Huh? “Whitney?”Whitney chuckled at the surprised look on my face. I looked from her to Ledger, then back to Whitney, piecing two and two together.“Yes, I'm one of Ledger's house keepers.” She said kindly. “I've worked here with the Rivers for years and was one of those that chose to remain when Chairman Rivers and others decided to leave.”Ah… Whitney turned to Ledger. “You must be pretty serious about her if you brought her here.” Whitney said with a grin.“Of course, I'm serious about her. What do you take me for?” Ledger retorted, looking offended. She laughed. “You don't need to be so defensive, Sledger. It was just an observation.” She rea
