Awkward And Rigid

She wasn't in the hotel room when I came back.

I sighed as I took off my shirt, running my hand through my hair. We really needed to talk about this.

This was a new country for her, somewhere she wasn't familiar with, and every time she stayed out without answering her phone, my mind went straight to the worst fucking places.

I picked up my phone, about to call her and hope to God it didn't go to voicemail when the door opened. I stiffened, my eyes glued to the door as I watched her step in, her hands once again full. And this time, there was a bottle of alcohol there.

I scoffed softly as I dropped the phone.

“Hey, you,” I said softly, my voice coming out rough for whatever reason.

“Jackson,” she said as she shut the door with her foot, turning to face me with her eyebrows pulled together.

This right here was a sight I could definitely get used to. Siri, coming back with her nose red with cold, looking too small in her big coat and thick gloves that swallowed her small hands. It was a comforting sight.

“Now, I know I'm late again, so please, save it.”

I scoffed as I turned towards the bathroom. “At least you know.”

I took off the rest of my clothes and stepped under the shower. I turned it on, grunting when the cold water hit me. I welcomed the cold, resting my head on the tiled wall, barely feeling the cold as I shut my eyes.

Things were… awkward between us.

Sure, she slept on my chest last night, I kissed her cheek when we woke up this morning, and we acted like we always did, but… but there was this unseen cloud hanging above our heads.

A cloud that made both our smiles look too forced. A rigidity that had settled between us, and the freedom we once shared was gone. I squeezed my eyes, my hands balling into fists and pressing into the wall.

It was all my fault.

I knew. Fucking hell, I knew if I pushed too hard, she would retreat. I knew if I asked for too much too soon, she would hide again. And yet I did it anyway.

For a second, I got impatient and greedy, and this is what it cost me.

Just… the way she had come to me that night, the way the walls were stripped between us, made me think maybe she was done hiding. It made me think that maybe she was finally going to stop pretending she didn't notice my feelings, and reciprocate them.

How foolish I was. And it hurts so fucking bad, and it was going to be hard to go back to the way we used to be.

Because now, I've gotten a taste of what it’s like when her heart was won. I’ve gotten a taste of that sweet side of Siri, and I would only want more.

And I couldn't count the number of times her teary face flashed in my mind. That had played a huge role in distracting me during practice.

Her eyes wide and red, her eyelashes wet with her tears, and that look in her eyes. It was devastating and so beautiful.

A fucked up part of me felt almost delighted that she had cried in front of me. Not because I enjoyed seeing her hurt—God, no—but because Siri didn't let people see her break, so the fact that she cried so painfully and beautifully in front of me, and knowing I caused those tears too, was doing something to me that I refused to acknowledge.

I sighed deeply and heavily as I turned off the shower and stepped out, wrapping a towel around my waist.

I froze when I stepped back into the living room and noticed something… different.

For one, the lights were off, and only a dim light was on. For two, on the floor near the TV, was a blanket with snacks and drinks. For three, Siri was standing too still beside the couch.

“Uhm…” she muttered as her eyes trailed over me, leaving heat in their trail. Her cheeks grew pink, her lips parted. She looked back at my eyes. “A movie… I thought maybe we could watch a movie and get drunk.”

I stared at her, my chest unbearably tight.

How? Someone, please tell me how I couldn't have been impatient. Please tell me how.

She was perfect. She was broken, sharp-tongued, and so fucking perfect.

I wanted to find that fucker Michael and punch a hole in his face for giving her this unseen scar.

I could see she wanted to try. No, fuck that. She was trying, and yet I also saw the hesitation in her eyes, the fear and the doubt.

But she… she was trying. Siri was trying, and it made me want to draw her into my arms and never let her go. To make her a promise and swear that I will never, not in this lifetime or the next, hurt her.

I would burn my tongue before I deliberately said something meant to leave another scar on her.

“Jackson?” she called softly when I just stood there and stared at her.

“Okay,” I said softly, my voice too rough. “Okay, baby. I’ll go get dressed.”

“No!” she said too quickly, taking a step towards me, and I paused, an eyebrow raised. Her face turned red, and she couldn't meet my eyes. “Uhm… I mean, sure. Go get dressed.”

I scoffed before I walked to the room, a smile on my face. She was trying. So the least I could do was be patient. She deserved that. She was worth it.

I picked up a pair of sweatpants but then paused. I dropped them, my smile growing, and picked up my boxer briefs instead. That was the only thing I wore as I stepped back into the living room. She was already on the floor, the remote in her hand.

“What would you like to–”

She cut herself off as her eyes turned to me and widened.

“Y-you said you were going to get dressed!” she yelled, her face redder than a tomato.

“And dressed I am, darling,” I said softly as I sat beside her on the blanket, her eyes following my every move.

“There’s nothing dressed about you, Jackson!”

I shove my hand into the bowl of popcorn, popping one into my mouth without taking my eyes off hers.

“Horror,” I said.

She blinked at me, her eyebrows pulled together as she swallowed. “W-what?”

“I would like to watch a horror movie, Siri.”

She scoffed as she looked back at the TV.

“Of course, you do. Horror and alcohol. What could possibly go wrong?”

Yeah, fuck Toria and her stupid advice. Fuck that happy ending nonsense. Sure, I do want a happy ending with him. I want a happy beginning, middle, and ending with Jackson. All of that and more! Damn it, I had even been thinking of the perfect future together with him. Yes—and fuck you—I’ve been thinking of going somewhere with him, getting a house, three dogs, and maybe one cat. We could live like that for a few years, then get married, and decide if we wanted kids. I'd already mapped out the perfect future, the perfect ending. So yeah… Use him? USE him? How on God’s green earth can I use him when I was in love with him? I was madly in love with that man, and it made me realize that I was never in love with Michael. No. No, I was just in love with the attention and the idea of love, the idea that someone finally wants me. But this painful shit with Jackson? This soul-crashing devastation? Yeah, this was love. This was love in its purest, fucked up form.So how was I going to us

  • Falling For My Hockey Stepbrother    Stay And Use

“I thought you might be gone already,” Toria said as we settled into my hotel room. “Jackson already booked my flight,” I said, opening a beer. “I leave in two days.”“Hmm. So what are you going to do till then? Stay cranked up in here?”“Probably.”“I could show you around, you know.”I thought about it for a second and shook my head, sipping my drink. “Thank you, but no.”I had thought about leaving and just going to tour on my own, but every time I thought about the possibility that I might run into him out there, I shook off that thought. Maybe I would have seen him with his hand around another woman’s waist, laughing with the boys and acting like that night didn't happen. But seeing him on screen tonight, I don't think any of that might have happened. I wanted to ask Toria what happened and why he looked that way, but then I might sound like I care, which I very much do, and I wanted to stay cool and keep up this nonchalant act until I was out of here. And so I sipped my drink

  • Falling For My Hockey Stepbrother    Play The Fool Again

SIRIHe… lost. I stared at the TV screen in my small hotel room, my eyes wide, hands squeezed together and pressed to my chest.“He lost,” I whispered it out loud like it would make sense if I did so. I told myself I wasn't going to watch the game, that I would stay away from my screen and just wait for my flight back home two days from now, but I couldn't. I couldn't let the chance of seeing him, even though it was from a screen, slip away. As soon as his team had skated onto the ice and the camera zoomed in on them, my eyes had found him immediately, and I knew something was wrong. His skin was too pale, his eyes looked too sunken, and he kept flexing his wrists over and over, to the point I was sure everyone in the arena must have noticed. And I could have sworn that he was trembling. The game started, and it was even worse. Everything about the way he moved, to the way he could no longer hide his trembling, was wrong. It filled my heart with dread and panic. I couldn't relax a

PRESENTThe smoke of that cigar, laced with a chocolate scent, burned into my nose even though he was across the street. The scent was the same: the cigar lit, resting on his lips, lifted in a smile. A small smile, soft and gentle. Not like that frightening smile he had on his face that night that still sends a chill down my spine. Elijah M’Call still looked the same even seven years later. His black hair was slicked back from his face, dotted with gray. His grey eyes were wrinkled at the corners from age. His shoulders were still broad beneath his tailored suit, and black leather gloves covered his hands. He still looked and dressed the same. Nothing had changed. After that night, I had cut every tie with this man. I made sure I never heard a word from him or received a single penny. I moved into Jacob’s house, and his mother accepted me without a single complaint, letting me stay until I could rent my own place. I didn't speak to my mother for two years after that. She came to my

CONTENT WARNING: This chapter contains references to domestic abuse and may be triggering to some readers. Reader discretion is advised. ~.~“I can think of a few things that can make you quit hockey,” my father said, his voice relaxed, but his face was filled with hell. He stood chest to chest with me, and I fought every instinct screaming at me to lower my eyes, to pull back. I fought them and stood perfectly still, not letting that dark look intimidate me.“What?” I spat. “Are you going to pay the coach to kick me out of the team? Then I'll just find another team to join.”“Jackson, please,” my mother whispered, and that just made my fists clench harder. Why was she calling me back and not her husband? He was the one threatening to take my dream away from me! My hopes for a better future, and still I was the one being called back? Did she really think I would just roll over and accept this bullshit? Bloody no. “That is way beneath me, Jackson,” he said in a low voice, acting li

  • Falling For My Hockey Stepbrother    Just A Little More

SEVEN YEARS AGOThe sun had long since set, and the neighborhood was dark by the time I strolled in through the back door, my shoes tied together by their laces and hanging around my neck, my hands shoved into my pockets. Hopefully my parents were asleep by now, and I wouldn't have to deal with either of them. It was exhausting to look into their eyes these days and act like everything was fine when I harbored a little bit of hatred for my father. Okay, maybe it was more than a little bit, but I won’t tell if you don’t. I spent time at Jacob’s house long after practice, then came home and lied through my teeth, saying the coach sucked us dry with practice, which is why I was so late. You can’t blame me. The atmosphere in this house was depressing, and hearing my father whistle while he smoked his cigar, acting like all was right and fair in the world, was pissing me off when I could see my mother was losing weight, when I could clearly see she was losing her shine. She just needed
