LEAH

“Get packing. We’re leaving in an hour.”

I froze with a Cheeto halfway to my mouth and turned to face my mother, certain I’d misheard.

“What?”

“You heard me. Get moving or I’m leaving without you.” She repeated.

My mouth opened and nothing useful came out. “But I thought—I thought—”

“You thought what?” She crossed her arms, hip cocked against the doorframe. “That I was joking last month when I told you I was getting remarried? Your father is out of my life. We’ve been divorced four years, Leah.”

She turned and dragged a suitcase into the living room like the conversation was already finished.

I set the Cheetos down. My appetite had gone somewhere else entirely. “So it’s really over? No talking things through, no—nothing?”

She stopped and looked at me, and something in her face went flat, the way it always did when she thought I was being difficult on purpose. “People move on Leah. I moved on. Your father moved on—he’s seeing someone, I guarantee it and I am in love with someone else.” She said the last part like a door closing, then vanished down the hallway toward her room.

I stood there a second longer than I needed to before I made myself walk to my room.

My wardrobe doors stuck the way they always had. I yanked them open and started folding clothes into the open suitcase on my bed, movements automatic, like my hands knew what to do even though the rest of me hadn’t caught up yet.

Four years. It had been four years since the judge signed the papers and ripped our family completely down the middle. When the split happened, my twin brother had chosen to stay behind with our father in New York, keeping the roots we had spent our entire lives growing. I had chosen to be with my mother, packing our lives into boxes to move across the country. Through every single day of the silence that followed, a small stubborn part of me had deeply hoped that the distance would make them remember what they lost, that they would find a way to come back together. But I had been completely wrong.

“Don’t forget anything.” She appeared in my doorway, watching me fold a sweater with more force than the fabric deserved.

I stopped folding a sweater, keeping my back to her as I tried to swallow the lump in my throat. "Who is he?" I asked, the question slipping out before I could lose my nerve. "This lover of yours."

Her whole face changed. A smile broke across it, soft and a little embarrassed.“Mr. Romano. Dario.” She said his name like it tasted good. “He’s Italian. A billionaire. I am so lucky to have found him, Leah.”

I studied her face, taking in the sudden youthfulness in her expression, the complete absence of the exhaustion that usually shadowed her features. If this monumental shift was what it took to make her happy, then I would force myself to swallow the bitter taste of my own resistance.

“Well. Whatever makes you happy mom.”

I meant it. Mostly.

“Does he know he’s inheriting a daughter with the marriage?” I asked.

She laughed, actually laughed, like the question itself was silly. “Of course he knows. I’m hardly going to hide my own children from the man I’m marrying. He knows all about you. And can’t wait to meet you.”

Something cold slid down my spine. “Can’t wait to meet me?”

She nodded, already turning to leave. “I told him about your artwork. He thought it sounded wonderful.”

I went back to folding, because there wasn’t anything else to do with my hands, and an hour later I was sitting in the passenger seat of her car, watching the neighborhood I’d grown up in shrink in the side mirror.

“Anything you need before we get there?” she asked, eyes on the road.

“Nothing.” My voice came out thinner than I wanted it to. “I’m fine.”

I wasn’t. My knee wouldn’t stop bouncing.

She glanced over, caught it, and laughed softly. “Don’t be nervous.”

Easy for her to say. She wasn’t the one about to move into a stranger’s house and call him something close to family.

The car turned up a long paved drive, and the house came into view, I didn’t have time to process it, a white stone, columns windows tall enough to fit two of me stacked on top of each other.

My mouth actually fell open.

“Close your mouth baby,” she said, laughing again, delighted with herself.

Men in dark suits that weren’t quite suits met the car before it had fully stopped, greeting my mother by name, already reaching for the luggage before either of us said a word. She led the way inside like she’d been walking these halls for years instead of weeks.

“Isn’t it beautiful?” she asked, arms spread like she owned the place already.

“It’s beautiful,” I agreed, because it was, and because there wasn’t anything else true to say yet.

“Go look around. I’ll get the bags sorted.”

She disappeared down a hallway, heels clicking against floor, and I stood alone in an entryway bigger than our old apartment’s living room, kitchen, and hallway combined. My goodness.

I made myself move. Traced my fingers along a bannister that curved up toward a second floor I hadn’t seen yet, past rooms with furniture that looked like nobody had ever actually sat on it.

A wall of framed photographs stopped me near what looked like a study.

The first one held a man in a dark suit, silver at the temples, a smile that looked practiced. I muttered it under my breath without meaning to. “Mr. Romano.” For sure he had to be the one.

I moved to the next frame, expecting more of the same — some formal family photo, maybe an old wedding portrait.

My breath left me before I understood why.

The face in the second photo wasn’t Dario Romano’s anymore.

It was Asher’s.

Our school’s star hockey captain. The boy every girl in that building had memorized his biography without trying. The one I’d spent years pretending I hadn’t noticed, because noticing him had never once ended well for anyone who tried.

I stood frozen in front of the frame, his name falling out of my mouth on nothing but air.

“Asher?”

LEAHI walked away from the corridor, my heels clicking against the polished floorboards as a tight, sickening knot pulled together deep in my belly. So truly, Abby was Asher's fiancée. Holy hell.A cold, bitter sting settled behind my ribs, making my breath feel uneven. Wow. So much for wanting me. So much for every low, breathless word he had whispered in the dark of his bedroom last night. "Leah!"Emilia’s voice called out my name, breaking through the static in my head. I stopped in my tracks and turned around to face her as she trotted up the hallway to catch her breath beside me."Did you hear about the flying rumors?" Emilia asked, her eyes searching my face with immediate concern.I gave a silent, indifferent shrug of my shoulders and turned back around, keeping my feet moving toward my locker.Emilia quickened her step, matching my pace along the row of lockers. "Are you fine?"I nodded my head once, my lips pressed into a thin tight line.Just as Emilia opened her mouth to

ASHERMy muscles locked up instantly at the sound of the word slipping from Abby’s lips.*Baby.*I snapped my head sideways, my dark eyes cutting straight toward Leah. The moment my gaze landed on her, she flinched slightly, her chin jerking away as she looked somewhere else quickly, fixing her eyes firmly on the lockers down the hall. A tight, suffocating knot pulled together in the center of my chest.I turned my head back to Abby, my jaw clenching so hard my back teeth ached against the strain. "I want to talk to you privately," I said, my voice dropping low, Abby glanced over her shoulder at Leah, offering a sweet, dismissive wave. "I will see you later, Leah."Without waiting for Leah to respond, I forced my injured leg into motion, limping past the open hallway. Abby fell into step right beside me, the click of her heels echoing against the polished floorboards. I kept moving until we rounded a quiet corner near the stairwell, completely cutting us off from the main corridor and

LEAH"Oh—uh, um... my name is Leah," I stammered out, forcing the words past the thick knot tightening in the back of my throat as I introduced myself to her.Abby reached out, her slim, manicured fingers wrapping around mine in a brief, bone chillingly cool handshake before she released her grip almost instantly."Apparently, rumors have it that you are Asher's girlfriend," she said, her voice dropping into a smooth, dripping cadence of polite distaste that made the hairs on the back of my neck stand straight up. She tilted her head, her eyes scanning my face as if dissecting a minor inconvenience. "Which really doesn't make any sense."I stood frozen right beside my open locker."I... I am not aware of any rumors," I said, my voice pitching up slightly as I scrambled to regain my footing under her oppressive stare. I forced my shoulders back, trying to project a confidence I did not feel. "Don't mind anything going on in this school. People just talk."Abby nodded very slowly, her g

ASHER"Careful with the leg," Caleb said, his voice dropping as he matched my slow pace down the hallway.A sharp, throbbing spike flared through my left knee with every step, but I gritted my teeth and kept moving. "Do not create a scene," I growled, keeping my shoulders squared despite the weight dragging me down. Caleb rolled his eyes, letting out a breath of pure exasperation, but he stayed close to my side.We made our way down the corridor and pushed through the doors into the locker room. The familiar scent of leather, sweat, and floor wax hit us instantly. Michael was sitting near his stall, tying his laces, but the moment he caught sight of me, he stood up immediately."You do not look alright, man," Michael said, his forehead creasing as his eyes swept over my rigid, uneven posture.I leaned heavily against the wooden locker behind me, my jaw clenched tightly. "I am ok, seriously guys.""You shouldn't have even bothered coming to school," Michael countered, stepping closer

LEAHA knock on the wooden paneling made me freeze, my brush halting mid stroke in my hair.I set the hairbrush down on the vanity table and walked over to the door, pulling it open. Asher was standing right outside, his large frame filling the threshold. He had both hands shoved deep into his front pockets, his posture rigid, his dark eyes sweeping over me with an unreadable intensity."Are you ready?" he asked, his voice low and a little husky in the quiet morning air. What happened yesterday flash through my mind and I flushed crimson. "I am ready," I replied. I turned back for a split second, dropping my comb onto the dresser, then stepped past him into the hallway to follow him outside. When we stepped through the front entrance and onto the driveway, Asher’s friend was already waiting. He was leaning casually against the side of a massive Rolls-Royce Cullinan, the dark paint gleaming under the morning sun. What the hell were they up to? Why the big car?As we approached, his fr

LEAHAsher’s mouth moved down to my neck, his lips burning against my skin as he kissed me with a desperate, overwhelming heat. The heat flared wildly, but then his fingers moved to my towel, loosening the knot tucked above my chest. A sharp gasp tore from my throat. My hand shot out, clamping around his wrist to freeze his movement before he can loosen it and expose my body, and I shook my head frantically against the mattress.Asher lifted his weight, pushing himself up on his forearms to look down at me. His chest rose and fell against mine, his dark eyes searching my face in the dim light."What is wrong?" he asked, his voice rough and breathless.I couldn't find the words. I just shook my head again, my fingers digging tightly into his arm, holding the fabric of the towel firmly in place. His eyes narrowed slightly, taking in my rigid posture, the way my breathing rattled in my chest. A sudden realization seemed to settle over his features. "Have you done this before?"My eyes w
