Why Is It You

[Briar’s POV]

“Why is it you?”

The words are leaving my lips before I can stop them, but honestly, I don’t care if he gets offended.

“I thought you would be happy to see me.” Jeffrey cooes, leaning back on the black leather sofa that he lounges on. “Especially since we haven’t seen each other in months.”

“For good reason,” I point out, crossing my arms. “When I broke up with you, I told you to not come find me.”

Frowning, I examine the man in front of me, noting that his wavy brown hair is styled in a new way and he has grown a goatee that I can only assume he thinks makes him look sexier. I mean, it does, but I’m not going to give him the satisfaction of knowing that. Not when we were no longer together.

“Come on, baby,” he sighs, standing to his full six-foot-five height and walking toward me. “I told you that I had a momentary lapse in judgment and that it would never happen again.”

Grimacing, I remain in place, watching as he continues to close the distance between us, and when he is mere inches from me and reaching for me, I smack his hands away.

“Don’t touch me with the same hands you touched her with.”

“Baby.”

“Don’t call me that.” I growl, my anger getting the better of me. “I’m not your baby.”

At my words, Jeffrey’s look of ease begins to slowly darken, and I know that he isn’t pleased with not getting his way.

This was the thing about him: he was a spoiled prince who grew up in a wealthy family and inherited his father’s company when he became of age. Of course, he wasn’t so bad in the past, and that was the reason I fell in love with him, but since becoming company president, he began to change.

It was subtle at first, with him making snide comments about the friends we both shared, then putting down people on the streets, especially those who looked less than upper class. However, like a fool in love, I ignored it, pretending that it wasn’t even happening because he was still kind to me.

But soon his comments moved onto me. Sometimes it would involve things I wore when I went out with him; other times it would be about my makeup just not being up to his standards.

I think it was around then that the love I felt for him began to slowly dwindle, but even then I still held on. Maybe it was because I wanted to believe that things would get better, or maybe it was because I didn’t want to be lonely anymore. I still didn’t know, but when he started staying out late, I knew that we just couldn’t keep going like we were.

It was after that that I began to build the courage to break up with him, but before I could do it, fate intervened, and I found him together with his secretary in the bed that we were together in so many times.

After that, he would continuously call me and text me, begging me to give him another chance. He insisted that it was a lapse in judgment because I made him feel lonely since I was becoming distant, and even when I felt that maybe, just maybe, I could give him another chance, I continued to hold onto my resolve, and eventually the calls and texts became less until they stopped altogether.

Fast forward six months, and I was moving on with my life, sleeping with new men, flirting with whoever I wanted, and continuing my investigation to find the people responsible for my brother's death. Everything was going great; I was doing great and even thriving, so why, why was he standing here in front of me acting like nothing ever happened?

“Briar.”

My name leaves Jeffrey’s lips like liquid honey washing over me and making my weak heart waver ever so slightly. But I continue to stand tall, refusing to give in and make a fool out of myself.

“How many times do I have to say that I fucked up before you’re willing to forgive me?” He continues when I don’t respond. “Do you know how hard these past six months without you by my side have been? You’re everywhere I look, you’re all I think about, and even though I told myself that I would leave you in the past, I just can’t.”

Frowning, I take in his words while wondering whether or not he thought about any of this when he was cheating or when he was insulting me because he didn’t think that I was up to his new standards.”

“If you cared that much for me, why did you do it?” I ask, wondering if he would give me an actual answer or if he would continue with the same excuses. “If you loved me as much as you are saying, why would you even seek out another woman?”

“That,” he begins, his gaze shifting, a telltale sign that he was about to lie. “She seduced me.”

“Seduced.” I laugh. “By seduce, do you mean she twisted your arm behind your back and forced you to fuck her in the bed that we shared so many times? Or did she get some type of leverage against you that left you with no other option but to fuck her?”

Growing quiet, I wait as he considers what I’ve said, and when he doesn’t respond, I know that he doesn’t have any excuses.

“Enough of this,” I sigh, grabbing the door behind me and pulling it open. “You coming here was pointless, and it would be best if you never came back again.”

Finished speaking, I fix my gaze on Jeffrey and wait while he stares at me, his expression neutral, his gaze dark, and when his lips twitch down into a frown, I feel a chill race down my spine as the room around us starts to feel almost icy.

“Are you really going to continue to reject me?” He asks, moving forward like a predator. “After all the trouble I’ve gone through to try to bow down and act meek and pathetic to try to get you.”

“What?” I hiss, shock rushing through me. “What the hell are you…AH!”

I don’t get to finish my words before his hand is shooting out and wrapping around my throat so he can push me against the wall while the door I was just holding open begins to close.

“Do you know who I am now?” He continues as my eyes widen. “Do you know the things I can do if someone doesn’t do exactly what I want?”

“I don’t care who you are.” I rasp, my heart beginning to hammer in my chest. “You could be the king of fucking England, and I still wouldn’t…AH!”

Jeffrey’s hand connects with my cheek, stopping me before I can finish speaking and making my head snap to the side as pain shoots through me due to the force he used.

“Shut up,” he growls, leaning so close his breath tickles my skin. “Just shut the fuck up before I make you shut up.”

“Who are you?” I whisper, not taking his warning seriously. “Who are you really?”

“Who,” he chuckles, his eyes beginning to glow a devilish red. “Do you really want an answer to that, baby? I don’t think you would believe me even if I said it, but since you asked, I guess I will answer you before you die.”

  • Falling Into Ruin.   His True Purpose

[Briar’s POV]“Asshole. This is a piece of shit. Tease.”The words escape my lips as I head toward the street to hail a taxi. If Ciaran thought I was going to forgive him for making me crazy and then leaving me dry, he had another thing coming.“Keep an eye out for a delivery.” I huff in annoyance, raising a hand to hail a taxi. “Like hell I’ll do that.”What the hell was even wrong with me? Why was I so angry? Was it because he basically rejected me after another man called? Was I really acting like some clingy girlfriend who didn’t get what she wanted from her boyfriend?Fuck. No. This wouldn’t do. I wouldn’t let that gorgeous beast string me along. Instead, I would make him the one who became a fiend for me, and I would start by not contacting him or coming to see him again for the time being. But you’re now working together. The small voice in the back of my head reminds me, only pissing me off further.Whatever. I would keep it strictly business and do as I please. There was no r

  • Falling Into Ruin.   An Interruption

[Ciaran’s POV]I stare down at my little mate, getting lost in her sex-crazed eyes, her flushed, sweat-soaked skin, and her beautiful body that moves against me. It’s all so fucking alluring and maddening, and it makes something in me begin to awaken, spurring me to stand up all the while holding her against me so that my dick can stay buried in her tight little cunt.“What are you doing?” She gasps as I lay us down on the couch.“Whatever I want.” I smirk. “Didn’t you say I could?”“I did,” she whimpers, locking her legs around my waist. “Just for tonight, use me as you please.”Only tonight, I think, starting to move in her. Like hell this would only be for tonight. Now that I knew what she tasted like, what she felt like, and how she looked, there was no fucking way I was going to let her get away from me. But this was just the start. Maybe vanilla sex felt fine because of our bond, but I was going to introduce her to the world that I thrived the most in.“Say it,” I husk, leaning

  • Falling Into Ruin.   His To Command

[Briar’s POV]My eyes widen at Ciaran’s command, and for a moment I don’t move.“What?” He asks, his golden eyes growing dark. “Don’t tell me that you’re going to stop now. You’ve already been such a good girl and come this far. If you want to try to seduce someone like me you should have the courage it takes.”“I’m not afraid,” I snap.No. I wasn’t afraid. I was more shocked by how hearing those words made me feel. Just the thought of doing such a thing in front of him actually excited me.“Then show me you aren’t afraid,” he rumbles, keeping me trapped in his gaze. “Show me how much you want this.”As he speaks, he begins to undo his pants until he can pull his fully erect dick free.Instantly, I feel my core throb in anticipation of being able to feel that thing inside me again.“So, you want me to do this.” I purr, leaning back and spreading my legs so I’m certain Ciaran has the perfect view of my pussy. When a low rumble of excitement escapes him, I touch my chest with my fingers

  • Falling Into Ruin.   His Command

[Briar’s POV]What am I doing? What the hell am I doing? Why am I here? These thoughts repeat themselves again and again as I stare up at the large, foreboding shadow that watches me like a hawk.He has seen me. I think inwardly, knowing that those golden eyes are taking me in and probably wondering the same thing as me.“Damn feet.” I hiss, looking down at them as if they moved on their own even though I was the one in control. “What the hell were you thinking?”As the words leave my lips, my phone begins to ring, and when I pull it out of my purse, I’m met with a number that I’ve never seen before.Frowning, I stare at it, wondering whether or not I should answer it, but something in me screams to do it, and when I hit accept and bring it to my ear, Ciaran’s deep rumble of a laugh attacks me.“What do you think you’re doing?” He asks, his voice especially low and dangerous. “Was dinner with me not enough for you?”“That,” I begin, snapping my gaze up to find that Ciaran is gone. “I

  • Falling Into Ruin.   Meet

[Ciaran’s POV]I watch as my little mate slowly moves away from me, her friend close to her side. Even if he was getting a bit too close to that which belongs to me, I was going to turn a blind eye for the time being. I wasn’t worried about him taking her, not when she was meant for me, but if I so much as found him trying anything funny, well, that was a different story. Keeping my gaze on them, I wait until they’re out of sight before turning and heading back home for the evening. There was no reason for me to remain in the heart of the city since my business was complete, and even though everything in me screams to follow my mate and then wait until she is alone to have my way with her, I don’t listen. When I return home, I head straight to the shower, washing the scent of human and alcohol off of me and then wrapping a robe around me. Still dripping, I head to the kitchen and prepare to have a drink but stop as the sound of wings rustling reaches me.Ryu. Why was he here again wh

  • Falling Into Ruin.   Guarded

[Ciaran’s POV]“Eat and drink what you want; it’s on me.” I announce, keeping my gaze fixed on my little mate, who looks like a terrified rabbit that could hop away at any given moment. “Money is not a problem.”After a bit of convincing, I managed to get my little mate and her companion to come out with me to have a meal and a drink. Of course, I wished that it was only my little mate and I, but I was pretty positive her friend wouldn’t allow us to be alone, or maybe he would since he let me steal her away the night before. However, I wasn’t going to push my luck. Not yet, not when we were still in the early stages of our relationship.“Just a water and salad for me.” My little mate announces, pushing her menu away.“That isn’t a proper meal.” I point out, knowing there was no way that was all she eats given the perfect amount of fat and curves on her. “If you won’t order something more, then I’ll order it for you.”“She’s a picky eater.” Her friend offers, causing my annoyance to fl
