Liam's POV

She finally said yes to going out with me and I drove home thinking about it.

Not in a complicated way. In the way you thought about something that had gone better than expected and you were trying to work out what to do with the gap between what you had planned and what had actually happened. The gap was larger than it should have been because I at least expected her to say no a few more times, making the chase worth it.

The plan had always been straightforward. Avery Nash was popul

Avery's POV"I heard them," I replied.Raven unscrewed her water bottle and drank from it and put it back on the counter. She was still in her bar outfit, which meant she had come straight from the floor rather than finishing her shift first, which she only ever did when she had something she wanted to talk about before the information got stale."Two groups," she said. "Girls came in first, maybe four of them. They were already on their second round before the guys showed up." She tilted her head slightly, thinking it back through. "Six guys maybe. Football types, the broad shoulder kind. Loud when they came in but they settled once they found a table."I kept my face still and reached for my makeup wipes."The two groups ended up together," Raven continued. "I don't know if they knew each other or if it just happened the way it does on a Friday. But by the time your set started they were all at the same table near the back left.""Sounds like a normal Friday," I said."Mostly," Rave

  • Falling for My Best Friend's Brother   143: Last set

Avery's POVI always swept the room during the last part of the set.It was something Raven had told me in my first month at Velvet Underground. 'Know your room', she said. 'Not just the front row. The whole room. You want to know where your energy is landing and where you are losing people.' So I did it every performance, a slow sweep from left to right near the end while my body was doing what it knew how to do and the thinking part of my brain had a spare moment to look around.I was midway through the final routine when I looked toward the far tables.I saw Tate first because Tate was tall and I had seen him enough times outside the club to recognise the shape of him even in low light. He was leaning back in his chair with a drink in his hand and saying something to Flynn, who was beside him. Then I saw Liam.He was at the same table, a little further in, and he was looking at the stage. Not the way people looked at a stage when they were waiting for their turn to talk again. The

  • Falling for My Best Friend's Brother   142: You know her?

Liam's POVZoey was watching the stage. She had not taken her eyes off Scarlett.I still did not answer her.Zoey did not push it. She just kept her eyes on the stage as the last note faded out and the room came back to itself, the crowd noise rising again to fill the space the music had been holding. Scarlett made a bow of thanks, easy and unhurried, and then stepped back from the light and walked off the side of the stage. The room returned to being a club.I picked up my drink and finished what was left of it and looked at the table and waited for the next thing to happen."That was genuinely good," Flynn said, to no one in particular. "Like, properly good.""She does that every Friday?" Kosta said."No idea," Tate said. He was not looking at me when he said it, which I appreciated. The conversation at the table picked up again, moving back toward whatever it had been before the set started. One of Zoey's friends had a story about something that had happened at her seminar that we

  • Falling for My Best Friend's Brother   141: Extraordinary

Liam's POVThe lights on the stage pulled into a single focused beam. And then she walked out.Scarlett.She was wearing something dark and not too revealing, and her mask was in place the way it always was, the one detail that never changed no matter what else did. She carried herself the way she always did when she came out, like she had already decided where her feet were going before she took the step, like the space was hers and she already knew it.She stepped to the centre of the stage and the room went quieter than I expected a room that size to go.I put my drink down on the table. The music came in, low and deep, and she started to move.I had seen her perform too many times before. I had come to Velvet Underground enough times over the past few months that her set was not new to me. I knew the way she controlled the stage, the way she used the space, the way she never rushed anything and never wasted a movement. I had sat at that bar and watched and gone home and told mysel

  • Falling for My Best Friend's Brother   140: The same room

Liam's POVI nodded back at Zoey from across the room.It was the least I could do. We were adults. We had ended things as cleanly as those things ever ended, and she had waved at me like a normal person and I was going to respond like a normal person, and that was going to be the entirety of the interaction.Tate appeared at my shoulder with two drinks. "You alright?""Fine," I said.He followed my eyeline across the room and found Zoey in about three seconds. He looked at her and then at me."Do you want to go somewhere else?" He said it without drama, just laying the option down on the table. I had told him about her earlier when she came in and joined my class and my project group with Avery."It's fine," I said. "She's here with her people, we're here with ours. It doesn't have to become a thing.""Okay," Tate said. "But I'm checking in again in twenty minutes.""You don't need to check in.""Twenty minutes," he said again, and handed me the drink, and that was that.I took it an

  • Falling for My Best Friend's Brother   139: Friday night

Liam's POV I thought about what Avery said for the rest of that week. Not the whole conversation. Just that one moment at the end of it, the way she looked at me after I said 'you already know' and did not argue with it. Did not pull back or laugh it off or find some way to make it smaller. She just looked at me and let it stay between us like something that belonged there, and I kept coming back to it in the in-between moments of the days that followed. On the walk to training. In the gap between lectures. In the twenty minutes before I fell asleep.I wasn’t used to that. Usually when I said something real, people pulled away from it or like Zoe made me feel bad for showing my emotions or something like that. But Avery never did. She stayed, listened, and I still didn’t quite know what to do with someone like that.Tate called on Friday afternoon while I was in the middle of trying not to think about any of it."Tonight," he said. "The guys are going out. Mulligan's first and then w

  • Falling for My Best Friend's Brother   032: Liking him more

Avery's POVHe did not answer straight away.I had asked about Jade like I was asking about a random stranger I didn't know. He was quiet as if there was an elephant in the room for a second or two before he picked it up. I lay still and waited and told myself I was just curious, that it was a natu

  • Falling for My Best Friend's Brother   029: The plot

Liam's POVI was three blocks from the library and still talking to myself.Who the fuck does she think she is?I kept walking with my hands deep in my pockets and my jaw so tight it ached. I had gone over it three times already and the answer was the same every time. Jade had stood on those steps

  • Falling for My Best Friend's Brother   025: Not your world

Avery's POVFor a moment nobody said anything.Jade stood two steps below us on the library steps with her shopping bag in her hand. I wondered how she knew where we were. Either way, the look on her face was not the quiet, contained version of hurt she had worn all afternoon at practice. This was

  • Falling for My Best Friend's Brother   009: Supposed to hate him

Avery's POVTwo seconds. The handshake lasted exactly two seconds and I was the one who pulled away first. He let me go without comment, and for a moment after I dropped his hand, he just looked at me. Not the polite, surface-level glance of a person being introduced to someone they do not plan to
