“MOM!”

My desperate scream tore through the room. The complete stillness of her body filled me with terrifying fear. Her hand felt heavy and lifeless in mine. Her chest wasn’t moving, and I couldn’t feel a heartbeat in her neck.

“Doctor! Please come in here!” Lucy shouted from the doorway, her voice filled with panic.

Footsteps rushed down the hallway, and Dr. Evans quickly returned to the bedroom with a small medical kit in his hand. He didn’t waste a second asking questions. He rushed past me

A male reporter cleared his throat.“Well, Mr. Paul, I must say that was quite convincing,” he said with an awkward laugh. “You certainly surprised us. I think acting might suit you.”Another reporter quickly joined in.“Yes! We were all shocked because we’ve never seen you behave like that before. Everyone knows you’re a calm, kind and generous man.”Luke smiled proudly.“Thank you. I appreciate that.”I wanted to ask them if they truly believed what they were saying. Had they not just watched him attack a woman?Had they not heard the hatred in his voice? How easily people could be fooled by a smile and a famous name.Luke waved at the reporters as if nothing had happened.“Thank you, everyone. We need to get inside now. I wouldn’t want to keep the priest waiting.”He took my hand again and led me toward the entrance. The moment we moved, the reporters began calling after us.“Mr. Paul! One last question!”“Ms. Leah, please tell us how you feel!”“Mr. Paul, can we have a picture of

I stared at the reporters. What could I possibly say? That I was terrified? That I had spent the morning wishing I could run away? That the man holding my hand had threatened me more times than I could count?I opened my mouth, but no words came out. Luke immediately squeezed my hand.It was a small movement, almost invisible to the cameras, but I understood the message.Be careful.“Of course she’s excited,” Luke answered before I could speak. “Today is a very special day for both of us.”The reporters laughed happily, and more cameras turned toward him.Another reporter pushed forward.“Ms. Leah, we heard you were kidnapped some time ago. Is it true that Mr. Paul personally rescued you? Many people are calling him a hero. Can you tell us what happened?”My heart nearly stopped. Those words sounded like a cruel joke.Luke had made sure the world saw him as the man who saved me, even though he had played a part in the fear and pain that had nearly destroyed me. Now people were standin

“Don’t you even dare think about laying a hand on her!” The voice cut through the air.My father froze, his raised hand stopping just inches from my face. For a moment, nobody moved. Even I stood still, trying to understand what had just happened. Then my father slowly turned toward the voice.Luke Paul stood a few steps away, staring at him with cold eyes. His face was twisted with anger, and his hands were clenched at his sides. There was no charming smile on his face. He looked like a monster ready to unleash his anger on anyone who dared challenge him.Luke walked toward us without saying another word. When he reached my father, he grabbed his raised wrist and shoved his hand away from me.“Mr. Steven,” he said through clenched teeth, “don’t ever make this mistake again.”My father immediately lowered his hand.Luke stepped between us, blocking my father from reaching me.“Leah will be my lawfully wedded wife in an hour. Do you understand what that means?” he continued, his voice

For a few seconds, neither of us moved.I held his wrist firmly and stared at him, unable to believe that he had actually tried to hit me on my wedding day.“Did you really think I would let you do that?” I asked in a low voice.“Let go of my hand!” he shouted.I pushed his hand away and stepped back.“No. You don’t get to raise your hand against me anymore.”His mouth fell open. I could see the shock on his face. He had never expected me to stand up to him, much less stop him from hitting me. But I was done being afraid.I was done begging for love from people who used my pain to get what they wanted. And I was done allowing my father to treat me as if I belonged to him.“How dare you—”“Keep it!” I cut in, raising my hand to stop him. “Keep every threat, every insult, and every useless speech to yourself. I have heard enough of your rubbish to last me a lifetime.”His eyes narrowed.“You little—”“Don’t finish that sentence,” I warned. My voice was sharp enough to make him pause. I

I turned toward the approaching footsteps and saw my parents walking toward us.For a moment, I simply stared at them. My mother was walking quickly, while my father followed behind her with his usual cold expression. The moment my mother spotted Adam standing beside me, her eyes widened with worry.“Adam!”She hurried toward us and grabbed his hand, pulling him away from me as if I were someone dangerous.“Adam, you scared us to death! Why would you run off like that without telling us? Do you know how worried we were? We have been looking everywhere for you!”Her voice was filled with concern as she checked him from head to toe to make sure he was okay. Not once did she look at me.I stood right in front of her in my wedding dress, about to marry a man I didn’t love because of the very people who were supposed to protect me. Yet, to my mother, I was no more important than a stranger standing on the street.I almost laughed. What had I expected?A hug? A kind word? Perhaps a motherly

I gasped and turned around, my heart pounding from the sudden pull on my wedding gown. For a moment, I was too shocked to speak. Then my eyes landed on the familiar face standing behind me, and all the fear inside me vanished.Adam! My little brother stood there, looking up at me with his arms crossed over his chest. His face held a stubborn frown, and his lips were pressed together as if he were trying very hard to stay angry with me.I couldn’t believe it.Adam was here!A wave of happiness swept over me, making me forget all about the reporters and flashing cameras. Thankfully, the limousine blocked their view, shielding me from their curious eyes. I lifted the front of my wedding gown slightly and hurried toward my little brother.“Adam!” I cried, my voice breaking with joy.I bent down and wrapped him in a tight hug, holding him as if someone might come and take him away from me.“I’ve missed you so much!” I whispered, pressing my cheek against his head. “Oh, Adam, you have no id
