My work is my priority

Adam

I drove my Lexus RX car into the compound as the gateman opened the gate for me. I skillfully parked at the parking lot without making noise. I stepped out of my car with a black briefcase at the left side of my hand. I smiled as I stared at the mansion building in front. It looks so nice and good to me. I wonder why I find it nice now after so many years or months. Maybe because I'm occupied with a lot of work that I don't have time to observe my surroundings which is really bad. It shouldn't be like that. It isn't good enough.

I walked into the house with the briefcase in my left hand. I looked up as a sweet and beautiful aroma hit my nose. It was so mouthwatering that I had to sniff every ounce of the scent that wafted the atmosphere in the room. My heart flutters knowing it's my mum cooking in the kitchen. Maybe I should go surprise her. I'm very sure she would be surprised to see me at home by this time of the day. I can't wait to see her priceless expression. I didn't inform that I'm going to come early because I want to catch her off guard.

Getting to the kitchen, I walked into the kitchen, the door was pulled open because of the food she was cooking. I glanced at her with a sigh. She is yet to notice my presence. She is carried away with the food she is cooking.

I shook my head with a sigh. She is the best mother ever. I tiptoed behind her, and blindfolded her with my hand. She wasn't able to see my face.

"Honey stop, you know we're in the kitchen. We can do it after the food is ready," she said, and I burst into laughter. She turned her back, and gasped out in shock as she saw me. She was really acting both surprised and shocked. She doesn't know what to say. I couldn't tell what's going through her mind. Why is she shocked? Maybe because I came early. Or maybe because of what she said earlier.

"What do you want to do mom after dinner?" I asked with a wink, staring at her into the eyes.

She avoided staring at me, she looked away with a flushed face. Her cheeks were red. I smiled as I stared at the priceless look on her face. It's indeed priceless.

"Keep your mouth shut you silly boy," she said as she turned back to the food she was cooking. I let out a soft laugh.

"What! Am I silly?" I asked, but she didn't bother to reply to me. She checked her wrist watch and let out a soft gasp from her lips.

"What's wrong mom?" I asked as I noticed something strange. She has a glimpse of shock in her eyes.

"I can't believe this. You came at 8 o'clock. Well you came right at the time now because we're about to have our dinner together finally," she said, and I nodded my head gently. She was really happy, singing and dancing to the beat of her song.

We're having dinner early because of my father— he was told by a doctor that he should take his dinner early so that he'll be able to take his medicine on time.

The dinner was really a lovely and nice one that I wish would happen every day but I know within me that it can't be possible because I'll always be occupied with work. I'm just lucky that I came early today, I don't always return home early. The chatting between me and my father is really nice and cute— that my mother had to interfere in the talk.

We all dropped the cutlery, and cleaned our mouth with a white and clean napkin. She stood up, and made to pick the dishes but I had to stop her— rendering her the help to take it to the kitchen. "Don't worry about it. Lemme do it," I said, and she nodded her head gently.

I stood up from the chair, and packed all the dishes from the table and took them to the kitchen. She followed me from behind to the kitchen. I looked up as she called.

"What's the secret? How come you came so early today?"she asked with a confused look. I let out a chuckle from my lips as I stared at the look on my face. I shrugged, but she was less concerned.

"I gave two projects to my staff for punishment. My other work has been completed early in the morning, and I don't have any meeting schedule today,"I said, and she frowned a little. I could tell she wasn't satisfied. She wanted me to tell her that I found an assistant that helped me with the work.

"Oh! I see the reason why you came early,"

"So have you found your love?" she asked, and I groaned with a frustrated look on my face. Must she bring this up?

"I don't have time for any love right now. My work is my priority,"I said.

" I know but you know you aren't getting younger again. You're ageing each day," she said, and I nodded my head gently.

" Can you drop this?" I asked, and she nodded her head gently. We talked for a while, and the conversation was really sweet and nice.

"I'm going to bed. I think you should do the same," she said, and I nodded my head gently even though I'm not sure if I would be able to sleep.

We both retired to our rooms. I walked toward my wardrobe after having a shower. I pulled out a black night pyjamas, and closed it back. I slumped hard on the bed, closed my eyes and drifted to sleep.

Since I'm finding it hard to sleep, I twisted and turned on the bed in an attempt to wake up all to no avail. I turned to my left side, and turned on the modern lamp beside me. I stood up from the bed with a groan since I couldn't sleep. I shook my head with a sigh.

Instead of waiting much time, I reached for my laptop on the nightstand. I opened it, and operated on it before browsing to the interviewer's private website that I'm aware of.

I peeked at my laptop screen as I opened the list of the final applicants which had been decided from which I would have to choose the assistant of my choice. I checked the documents of the first four applicants then my gaze went to the last one. Kathie Patterson, I was surprised to find the name of the girl who has been messing around me lately. I couldn't help but imagine what would happen if she became my assistant. Trouble!

But for some reasons, she was approved by the interviewer, of course, because she has all the qualifications required for the position that others didn't have. Also the achievement that she had at her young age.

Everything was perfect and nice in her CV but one thing doesn't seem to look right. Why hasn't she done any internship yet? If she was this talented as stated in her CV then she could have easily found a job. Or was it because of her childish nature because it's a thing to talk about. I continued to read her CV to know more about her.

I found something about her, though it was a little details. She used to live in the countryside, and came to the city three days ago in search of a job. It was the same day she fell down from the sky or maybe a building. The poor girl had to experience bad things on her arrival to the city. I felt bad and sad for her but why? I shouldn't think about this. Maybe because my head is hurting. I closed my eyes for a while to relax, but I accidentally slept off with my laptop beside me.
