Liam's POV

I knew Raina was starting to get agitated with me for being so pessimistic, especially with how little progress we were making.

I could feel it—the stiffness in her movements, the edge in her voice. Even her will to keep searching was fading. That’s why I did what I did.

Hiding the truth had begun to look like a terrible idea, not when I saw how much stress it was putting her under. So, I left clues for the Sheriff, led them to the body after making sure no one would trace back my involvement in it, and waited for Raina to get the news.

What I hadn't expected was how much effect the mangled body of her dad would have on her. I thought finding him—dead or alive—would put her at ease. But I was starting to think I'd made a huge mistake.

“How can this happen?” I heard her scream. “Look at him! Something did this. Don't give me bullshit about it being a wild animal, Sheriff, ‘cause I know even you doubt that.”

“Raina—” her uncle started, but the Sheriff beat him to it.

  • Fangs of Windshade   Chapter 25

Raina's POV The low murmurs of sympathizers and hypocritical well-wishers were what I woke up to. As you might’ve guessed, today wasn’t one of those days I woke up on the right side of the bed. I was pissed.I didn’t want their pity. Not from the neighbors who suddenly remembered I existed. Not from the so-called friends who hadn’t reached out to me in years. Their sad eyes and sorry faces only made it worse.Without speaking to anyone, I showered, put on my uniform, and left the house before they could stop me. I didn’t slow down when some neighbor tried to pat my arm and mutter something about ‘hope’. I didn’t react when Uncle Garett decided today was the perfect day to confess he’d known about my ‘unemployment’ situation for a while. One look at my face, and everyone kept their distance.Truth was, I had no idea where I was going. Normally, I’d use this opportunity to focus on work, but since I’d missed work for more than three days without calling in, Frank had fired me through t

Raina's POV Lies.I haven't said anything about a lead, yet he knew. I acted like I didn't notice the slip, or the way his mannerisms shifted a bit when I asked the question. Whatever his reason for lying was, I knew I wouldn't get it out by confrontation. I'd just have to play along for now. I faked a small smile when we reached my front door and let go of him. “Thanks for walking me home.”He shoved his hands into his jeans pocket. “Anytime.”We stood on the porch staring at each other in silence for a while. I half-expected him to break the silence and say he was leaving, but he just stood there, shifting uncomfortably on his feet. His eyes scanned our surroundings, before returning it back to me. “Do you mind me keeping you company till your uncle comes? I just…I don't feel comfortable leaving you home alone.”If it had been any other day before I found out he lied, I would have invited him in. His company usually made me feel safe. But now that I knew he was hiding something,

  • Fangs of Windshade   Chapter 22

Raina's POVTwo weeks. Fourteen days of futile searching. No clue about my parents. Nothing new from the police. And still, Liam kept helping me.We'd pulled up every public record we could find, asked around the restaurants where they used to go for date nights, even circled town again, retracing every possible path they could have taken. Still— nothing.I stared blankly into my bathroom mirror as the last flicker of hope slowly burned out. If a vampire with centuries of generational knowledge couldn't dig up a single lead, what chances did I have?I dropped my towel and got dressed slowly, slipping into a short, floral red dress and a black jacket, matching boots completing the look. My hair fell to my shoulders, and just as I reached for my phone, a message lit up the screen.I'm at your doorstep.I sighed, thumbs flying across the keyboard.Be down in a minute.Going on a date was the last thing I wanted to be doing right now, but Silas had been texting me every day for the past w

Liam’s POVI was supposed to turn at 5th Street—the road that would take me to Raina’s house so I could check on her. But the scent of blood hit me like a wall, sharp and sudden, coming from the alley opposite me. It was enough to make me stop in my tracks and veer off course. The smell was fresh—not too fresh. It wasn’t the kind that stirred hunger in me. No, this was different. Wrong. It made my stomach churn. It had to be the creature.I moved closer, every step cautious as I tuned out the stench and focused on any sound, any voice. That's when I heard her.“Dad?” Her voice was small, unsure—laced with fear. “You're hurting me.”I froze. My body went rigid at the sound of her soft treble. The fear in it pushed me into motion.Using the wind to clear the scattered trash and broken bricks in my path, I sprinted forward.“Just one bi—”“Raina!” I shouted, reaching her just in time—moments before the creature could sink its teeth into her.I yanked her up from her knees and pulled her

  • Fangs of Windshade   Chapter 20

Liam’s POV The second Raina stepped ahead of me, I felt it.A shift. A stillness. The kind that didn’t belong in rain or city noise. The kind that raised the hairs on the back of your neck. Like we were being watched.Raina didn’t notice. She kept walking, unaware I’d stopped. I wanted to catch up, pretend I was overthinking—but the presence... they were vampires.“You coming?” Raina called, her voice faint through the downpour.I forced my legs to move, wanting to be near her, even if it was for something as grim as tracking down her missing parents. Still, the unease lingered. I couldn’t follow blindly—not if we were being watched. Not when the clan wanted her dead.I shot her an apologetic look, then glanced at the rooftops. Her eyes followed mine, squinting through the rain. She turned back, raising a hand in question.“You okay?” she shouted, barely audible under the pounding rain. She didn't notice anything. Good. Maybe I was just being paranoid. I took a step forward, about to
