The morning after her first shift was one of exhaustion and awe. Eve woke with a headache, her body aching in places she didn’t know could ache. But it wasn’t just physical—it was as though something inside her had shifted too, in ways she couldn’t yet understand. The wolf was there, prowling in the back of her mind, always present. Even though she was back in her human form, she could feel it, like a quiet hum beneath her skin.

The moment she stepped out of the small cabin she had been given within the Silverclaw compound, she could sense the change in the air. There was an unusual tension, a heaviness that hung over the camp. The usual bustling sounds of the wolves preparing for the day were muted, and there was a quiet that didn’t quite fit.

Luca had told her they would train every morning. But today, something felt different. Something was off.

Eve met Luca outside, her nerves still a mess from the previous night’s transformation. He stood with his arms crossed, his usual calm expression slightly hardened, as if he were expecting something—or someone.

"What's going on?" she asked, her voice tentative.

Luca’s gaze flicked to her, his eyes scanning her face before settling on the horizon. “There’s been a... development,” he said slowly. “Something we weren’t prepared for.”

She frowned, stepping closer. "What do you mean?"

His jaw tightened, and his gaze darkened. "There’s word that Elias Thorn has been seen near the border of the Silverclaws' territory."

Eve felt a sudden lurch in her chest at the mention of the Shadowfangs’ leader. Elias was the one person she had been warned about. The one person who could disrupt everything.

“Elias? What’s he doing here?” Eve asked, her voice rising with alarm.

“We don’t know,” Luca replied, his voice tense. “But we can't afford to underestimate him. He’s a master manipulator. If he’s here, it means trouble.”

The fact that Elias was so close sent a ripple of unease through Eve. She had heard stories about the Shadowfangs—violent, ruthless, cunning. And Elias Thorn was their leader, known for his charisma and power, as well as his dangerous ambitions. He would never approach the Silverclaws unless there was something in it for him.

“Are we going to do something about it?” Eve asked, trying to hide the panic creeping into her chest.

Luca studied her for a moment, his gaze unreadable. “We have to wait for the right moment. We can’t confront him without knowing exactly what he wants.”

“I don’t like the idea of just waiting around,” Eve muttered. “What if he comes here with intentions to attack?”

Luca’s expression softened slightly. “We’ll be ready for him. But for now, we need to focus on you. Training continues today.”

Eve opened her mouth to argue, but Luca’s stern look silenced her. She knew he had a point. There was nothing she could do to stop Elias from making his move. But she couldn’t ignore the fact that she was now caught between two worlds—the Silverclaws, her new family, and the Shadowfangs, led by a man who could bring everything crashing down.

Her mind was swirling with questions—Why was Elias so close? Was there a reason he was interested in her? What did the prophecy have to do with all of this? But all she could do now was focus on Luca’s training. She couldn’t afford distractions, not if her future depended on it.

“We’ll continue with the training, but I want you to stay aware,” Luca said, snapping her attention back to the present. “If Elias is moving closer, there’s a good chance the Shadowfangs will try to make a move on us soon. We need you ready.”

Eve nodded, trying to ignore the feeling of dread tightening in her stomach. The pressure of the situation was suffocating, but there was no turning back now. She had to be strong, for herself and for the pack.

The training was more grueling today. After the previous day’s shift, Eve had thought she might be able to handle it. But she quickly realized that she had only just begun to scratch the surface of her power. Every movement felt awkward at first, as if her body hadn’t fully accepted what had happened to her. The wolf inside her, although awakened, was wild and unrefined.

Luca didn’t go easy on her.

He pushed her through drills, making her run, shift, and practice controlling her strength and speed. Every time she faltered, he was there to correct her, sometimes with praise, but often with sharp commands that made her grit her teeth in frustration.

By the time the sun had reached its peak, Eve was sweating, exhausted, and sore all over. She had been shifting in and out of her wolf form so many times that her muscles felt like they were on fire. Her body was still adjusting to the new reality, and every shift felt like she was being pulled in two different directions—her human self and her wolf.

"You need to focus," Luca said firmly as she stumbled during one of her shifts. "The wolf doesn't follow orders unless you give it control. You’re still thinking too much like a human."

Eve clenched her jaw, frustration bubbling up inside her. "I’m trying. It’s not as easy as you make it look."

Luca’s expression softened, but he didn’t let up. "I know it's not easy. But that’s the point of training. You have to learn to control the wolf, or it will control you. And when that happens, you won’t just be a danger to others—you’ll be a danger to yourself."

The harshness in his words stung, but Eve knew he was right. Her struggle wasn’t just with shifting. It was with accepting the animal that lived inside of her. The wolf wasn’t just a part of her— it was her now, and if she couldn’t control it, she could lose everything she had left.

She pushed herself harder, concentrating on each shift, on feeling the wolf, not as an enemy, but as a part of her—something she needed to understand. The process was slow, and each time she faltered, it felt like a setback, but with every mistake, she felt a little closer to the truth.

Hours later, when the training finally ended, Eve was mentally and physically drained. The sun was beginning to set, casting long shadows across the compound. She couldn’t remember the last time she had felt so exhausted, but as she made her way back to her cabin, she noticed the tense atmosphere had only grown thicker.

Something was coming.

As she passed the common area, she caught sight of a few of the pack members gathered in low conversation, their faces serious, their eyes darting toward the horizon. It was a look she had come to recognize—a pack on high alert.

Luca had been right. The Shadowfangs were getting closer.

She felt a chill run down her spine, and she knew, in that moment, things were about to change forever.

That night, as Eve lay in her cabin, the sounds of the forest surrounding her, she couldn’t shake the feeling of impending doom. The sense of something dark, something threatening, lingered in her chest. Every instinct she had told her to be ready—to fight, to run, or to hide.

But there was nowhere to hide anymore.

Eve had stepped into this world, and now, it was her responsibility to navigate it, to protect those she cared about, and to confront the shadow that loomed over her life. Elias Thorn wasn’t just a threat to the Silverclaws. He was a threat to her very existence.

And she had no choice but to face him.

They feared what you might choose.”Eve tore her gaze from the parchment and looked at her aunt. “Then tell me—what exactly am I supposed to choose?”Helena hesitated before exhaling. “The prophecy speaks of two paths. One leads to salvation, where the packs unite under your rule, bringing peace. The other… leads to destruction. A war so fierce it will tear apart the werewolf world forever.”A chill ran down Eve’s spine. “How do I know which path I’m on?”“You don’t,” Helena admitted. “But one thing is certain—the Elders believe you’re a threat.
