Chapter sixteen

I woke the next morning to Abbigail stroking the scar on my shoulder from the night I almost died. Beth was trying to calm her down and wasn't able to. I sit up, wrapping my arms around her. I motion for Beth to come on my other side, noticing that she was upset about not being able to calm down Abbigail.

I kiss both of their heads and rub their backs. I know no words will do justice to calm them down so I just hold them. I let them calm down at their own pace and occasionally kiss their heads. "I'll make my special breakfast," I say softly as I got them mostly calmed down.

"Will you add extra chocolate chips," Abbigail asks in a choked whisper and Beth nods in agreement.

"I can do that," I say in a soothing tone, give them a kiss and head to the kitchen.

I gather what I need to make chocolate chip pancakes and mix up the batter. I feel as the girls take turns hugging me at my back. I turn to give them a kiss on their foreheads and continue with breakfast. There was a knock a
