XANDER POV

I don't think I'd ever kissed anyone the way I kissed Mabel that night.

It wasn't the practiced kind of kiss I'd perfected over years of being exactly who everyone expected me to be, careless and easy and forgettable by morning. This was different.

She'd kissed me back like she meant it, like something in her had finally stopped fighting itself, and when the softest sound slipped out of her against my mouth, something primal in me nearly lost every ounce of control I had left.

19MABEL POVThe moment the door clicked shut behind Xavier, I found myself pacing the length of my room, his final words looping over and over in my mind until they stopped making sense entirely.“I wish I could tell you the truth.”What truth? Truth about what exactly. My thoughts spiraled in every direction at once, snagging on each unanswered question only to tumble forward into another, more tangled than the last. Why had he come here in the middle of a lockdown just to warn me away from his brother. Why did it matter to him who I chose to kiss when he was the one who had stood in front of the entire academy and rejected me without hesitation. And what possible truth could he be hiding that he couldn't bring himself to simply say out loud. What exactly was going on?I stopped pacing long enough to grab my phone, my fingers trembling slightly as I pulled up Ava's contact and pressed call. She answered before the first ring even finished, and within a few minutes I heard quick fo

  • Fated to Both Alpha Heirs.   Chapter 18

18MABEL POVI stood frozen, staring at Xavier as he stepped past the threshold and into my room like he had every right to be there, like the lockdown currently sealing off the entire academy simply didn't apply to him.Even now, even with confusion and dread tangled together in my chest, some traitorous part of me still noticed how effortlessly graceful he was, the way he moved like every step had been considered and executed with precision, the way his presence alone seemed to shrink the space around him.He shut the door behind him with a quiet click, his gaze never once leaving my face."We need to talk," he said.My heart leapt before I could stop it, an involuntary, humiliating response to four simple words from the boy who had once stood in front of the entire school and rejected the bond between us without a flicker of hesitation. Why would he want to talk to me now, of all moments, after everything. My mind drifted, unbidden, back to the elevator, the way the doors had opene

17 MABEL POV I couldn't stop staring out that window, my mind refusing to accept what my eyes had already confirmed. This is both weird and confusing, I can't lie. "Mabel." Ava's voice pulled me back, and when I turned, she was holding her phone out toward me, screen glowing in the dim light of the room. "Students are already talking. Look." I took the phone from her, scrolling through a stream of messages and posts, all buzzing with the same confused speculation. Someone had spotted my father from their dorm window too, and now half the academy seemed to be asking the same question circling endlessly in my own mind. Why was Victor Sinclair standing in the middle of a crime scene at a school he had never once set foot on in all my years attending it. "I need to know why he's here," I said, already reaching for my own phone, my fingers trembling slightly as I found his contact and pressed call. He picked up on the second ring, his voice warm and steady in a way that only made

16MABEL POVI thought the video would be the worst part of my day.By the time I stepped out of my dorm that morning, it felt like the entire academy had already seen it, the kiss, the tears on my face, Xander's hand against my cheek, all of it dissected and passed around like currency.I kept my head down as I walked, avoiding every glance, every whisper that trailed behind me like smoke. I told myself I could survive judgment. I'd survived worse.I had no idea the day still had something far worse waiting for me."You still haven't told me why," Ava said, falling into step beside me, her voice low but insistent, the same question she'd been circling since the moment she found out. "Why did you kiss him, Mabel? You didn't even mention it happened.""I wasn't ready to talk about it." I kept my eyes forward, my arms wrapped around my books like they could shield me from the stares I could feel prickling against my skin. "I still don't really know how to explain it.""That's not an ans

She looked shaken, guarded, almost angry, like she regretted every second of what had just happened between us. I wasn't used to caring what a girl thought of me after a kiss. I wasn't used to ca

  • Fated to Both Alpha Heirs.   Chapter 14

14MABEL POVEverything happened so fast and before I knew it, it was the day of the welcome back party. The great hall had been transformed into something out of a magazine spread, string lights woven through the rafters, tables draped in silver cloth, music thumping low enough to talk over but loud enough to make the whole room feel alive."You need to calm down," Ava said, nudging my elbow as another cluster of students swept past us in a blur of silk and gold. "You've been fidgeting with that bracelet for the past ten minutes straight.""How are you calm right now?" I hissed back, glancing around the ballroom that Mooncrest had transformed into something out of a fever dream, chandeliers dripping light onto polished floors, the entire student body dressed like royalty for a party none of us had asked to attend. "Everyone is staring at me, Ava. I can feel it.""Not everyone is staring at you.""Everyone is staring at me."She opened her mouth to argue, probably to tell me I was bei
