"Screw cooking, I ordered pizza," Mom announces as she walks back into the living room.

I jump, startled, my attention still fixed on Drevin's text.

"Hmm?" I glance up at her, quickly locking my phone and placing it facedown on the coffee table. I try my best not to let her see how much that message has affected me.

"I said I ordered pizza," she repeats, a little slower and quieter this time.

"Oh, yeah. That's great. Dad and Callum love pizza."

"Yeah, plus we're not done with our girls' day."

I don't get a response from Drevin. Not that I'm waiting for one.Okay, maybe I check my phone a couple of times before I finally plug it in to charge. But that's only because he was the one who wanted to talk in the first place. You'd think he'd have his phone nearby.Maybe he's busy, Nyx offers. Then he can be busy. She doesn't answer, but I can practically feel her rolling her eyes.I turn my phone facedown on the nightstand and climb beneath my blankets. For a little while, I stare at the ceiling, listening to the muffled sound of the television downstairs.Part of me wants to pick the phone up again.I don't.Eventually, I roll onto my side and fall asleep.***The next morning, I wake feeling better than I have in days. Not perfect. My legs are still a little sore from my first shift, and there's a dull ache in my shoulders when I stretch, but at least my head doesn't feel like it's stuffed with cotton anymore.I reach for my phone.Nothing.I stare at the empty notifications fo

"You know," Callum says around another mouthful of pizza, "this tastes a lot better when it's stolen."I narrow my eyes at him."Get off me, you big oaf!" I laugh, shoving against his shoulder. He grins and deliberately drops more of his weight onto me."Say please.""Callum!" I shriek, smacking his arm. "You're crushing me!""Please, Callum, my favorite and most handsome brother," he says in a high-pitched voice, apparently trying to imitate me."You're my only brother, idiot!""And your favorite."I roll my eyes before managing to shove him hard enough that he loses his balance. He tumbles sideways, and I scramble to my feet before he can grab me again."You're such a jerk.""Love you too, Cammy."I stick my tongue out at him and head back toward the kitchen, brushing myself off.Ask him.Nyx's voice sounds in my head.I'm getting to it.You were staring at him.Thank you, I hadn't noticed. She huffs and settles back into silence.Callum catches up to me just as I reach the kitchen,

I'd assumed that with Dad and Callum coming home soon, our girls' day would be over."No way, favorite daughter!""Only daughter," I remind her, rolling my eyes. She laughs and reaches down to pull a box from the floor. For a moment, I feel a familiar rush of excitement before reminding myself that I'm not five years old anymore.Still, somehow, that box has the same giddy effect on me that it always has. It's nothing special to look at. Just a plain white box, battered and worn from

A couple of hours later, I find myself curled up on the couch beside Mom, my face covered in some kind of dark green goop.According to her, the mask is supposed to detoxify and tighten my skin, while the lavender oil in it is meant to help me relax. Apparently, it's also great for headaches and relieving tension."Okay, what are we watching?" she asks, tossing me the remote. "There's a new romantic comedy on Netflix I've been dying to see."My nose wrinkles before I have a chance to school my expression.Unsurprisingly, Mom notices, but she doesn't say a word."Or," she continues, "I saw a new documentary on Hulu about that serial killer on the West Coast." She smiles and reaches for the bowl of popcorn on the coffee table. "You know, the one who leaves tarot cards at every murder scene?""That one!" I say before she can suggest anything else. "You know I can't resist a good serial killer documentary."Mom smiles and nods as I press the Hulu button on the remote and search for it.A

By the time the sun rises the next morning, I am wrecked. My body hurts, my head feels swollen and plugged, and worst of all, there is a throbbing thread that seems to lead to the one person I least want to think about right now.I pull myself from bed, turning the shower to scalding before slipping beneath the spray and letting the heat cascade over me.When I step out ten minutes later, I only feel marginally better. I look a little better, at least. The angry redness around my eyes has faded, though faint shadows still sit beneath them, and my face isn’t quite as puffy as it was when I climbed out of bed.I sigh as I stare at my reflection in the mirror, my hair dripping around me.*I think this might be the best it’s going to get today.*I can feel Nyx inside my mind. She doesn’t speak, but she rubs against my ribs in quiet comfort.I slip into a pair of maroon sweats and a black hoodie before carefully opening my bedroom door. I linger in the doorway, listening for the familiar s

Callum opens the back door just as I reach the first step.Of course. That’s the thing about my brother. He has this supernatural ability to appear at the lowest moments in my life. The ones I don’t want anyone to witness. Usually shoveling food in his mouth as he asks questions.Tonight he opens the door in gray sweatpants and an old Washington Commanders T-shirt stretched over his broad frame, a turkey sandwich hanging from his hand, mustard staining his cheek. His brows furrow as his gaze travels over me.“Jesus, Cam.”I glance down at myself. Mud streaks my pants, the knees dark and wet. My sweater has water stains and is still damp around the cuffs from brushing the wet undergrowth, there is a dark smear across one sleeve where I must have wiped my face at some point. My hair feels like a mess, I imagine it looks much worse. I could hear the crunch of leaves as I tuck it behind my ears.“I.. went running.”He frowns.“At midnight?”“Nyx likes cardio.” I shrug casually, maybe t
