Zoe's POV

I barely heard Xavier start talking. I knew he had been planning this speech since we got in the car two days ago.

"Zoe, I won’t pretend to understand your pain. I won’t insult you by saying I do. But I know how many times I’ve let you down." His voice was careful, like he was walking on thin ice.

"Don’t. Please." I turned away. I had dreamed of this moment so many times—Xavier realizing what a huge mistake he had made. But not like this. Not when I was barely holding myself together.

"Let me say this. You need to hear it, and I need to say it." He stepped closer, his hands resting lightly on my arms. Not trapping me. Just asking me to stay.

"Why?" My voice was bitter. My body tensed under his touch. I hated how my senses reacted to him now—too sharp, too raw. "You didn’t care about talking months ago."

"Believe me or don’t, but I thought letting you go was the right choice. I wanted you to have a fresh start." Regret thickened his voice, but I didn’t care.

Zoe's POVI climbed the stairs, leaving Xavier in the garage. He needed time to calm down. My forgiveness—if it ever came—wouldn’t be immediate. That was his problem, not mine.He wanted to tell me something about Claire, probably to convince me I had nothing to worry about. But I didn’t care about her. I was done caring about him. His past didn’t matter to me anymore. The only thing that mattered was getting to those coordinates. I had no idea what I would find there, but it was my only lead. My mother left me that clue for a reason. I wouldn’t ignore it. A decade had passed. Anything could have changed. But I needed answers.I rushed through the house, grabbing only the essentials. Clothes, water, a flashlight, a knife. I packed quickly, like I had done this before. Because I had. Running was second nature now."She’s really doing this," Aunt Julie muttered from the kitchen doorway.I ignored her. Nothing to say.Xavier, however, had other plans. By the time I reached the garage, my

It took an hour and a lot of emotional blackmail from Aunt Julie to convince me to let Xavier come to Kansas City. The only reason I agreed was to test if he could keep his word. Nothing more, nothing less. After endless talk about mates, second chances, and the Moon Goddess, Aunt Julie smiled and patted my back. "I'll go tell him you need to talk. Be nice, okay?"I didn’t roll my eyes, though I wanted to. I respected her too much for that. Instead, I shook my head, knowing she had played me perfectly. She always did.If anyone had a right to push me, it was Aunt Julie. She had done more for my family than anyone. More than just a distant cousin of my dad or a housekeeper—she was family. The closest thing I had to a mother."Be nice, Princess." She gave me one last sweet smile before heading inside.I sighed, leaning against the hood of my car and fidgeting with my keychain. My fingers itched for something that wasn’t there—my father’s necklace. The one I had given him in the prison.

Book Two:Do you know what they say about life? They say it's like a journey. Twisting and turning, never stopping until the final destination is reached. And despite everything that I've been through, I feel like my journey has a lot to show me before my final destination. Many thoughts ran through my head as I drove through the American landscapes silently. My beast, Dahlia hadn't talked to me since I started on this road trip. Not that I minded the silence. I won't deny that while once I had been dying to get my animal, having someone hear and judge my every thought became a little annoying, especially because I was going through so much stuff as well.'You are not as entertaining as you think you are either,' I resisted the jumpscare as Dahlia finally decided to let me know that she had indeed been listening to my every thought for the past many hours.'Yes, I have been listening because you still haven't learned to build the mental wall to allow each of us some much-needed priva

Xavier's POVZoe had been distant with me since we started the road trip. Who could blame her? I didn't. I blamed my bad decisions for putting such a wall between us that it was going to be hard to break it down and get to her. But I was nothing if I wasn't relentless. We had no idea what to expect in Kansas City. I would've asked someone to fly in and take a look before us just for Zoe's safety. But, I needed to stay out of touch for the sake of keeping my pack safe from the consequences of my actions. An Alpha was nothing without his pack. But, a wolf was nothing without his mate. To be a stronger Alpha and protect my people, I needed to be a better mate. And that meant doing everything I could to seek Zoe's forgiveness and hopefully take her back to my pack that had been without a leader for so long. I knew leaving Gramps in charge was as good as it could get. She was resourceful and wise but the world was changing. Awful things were going on. I was hoping that this road trip w

I woke Xavier up early the next day and grabbed breakfast to-go. I was eager to get to the coordinates my mother had left me. Desperation clawed at me—I needed to find meaning in my life. I had to find a purpose. We only stopped at a gas station to refuel, grabbing lunch to-go before getting back on the road. Xavier kept glancing at me with concern, and I could see the worry in his eyes. He was hoping that whatever was waiting for us in Kansas would help me, the way I needed it to.The journey was monotonous, the silence stretching on. Spike wanted to talk to Dahlia, but Dahlia still hadn’t accepted his mind-link. She was eager to know more about her mate, but loyal to me. If I was that upset with him, she thought, then he must’ve hurt me badly. Honestly, I was a little mad at him too. Mates were supposed to respect, love, and protect each other. They were supposed to have each other's backs. But Xavier—my mate—had abandoned me and chosen someone else. The sun began to set, casting or

"Are you okay?" Xavier asked—again. Like the hundredth time tonight.I let out an annoyed sigh. "Yes, I’m fine. Quit asking.""Just checking," he said, shrugging."Don’t," I snapped, rolling my eyes. For once, I wasn’t even mad at him. Just pissed at this stupid weather. We were already stuck in the middle of nowhere, and then—because why not?—the clear sky decided to dump a full-blown storm on us in like thirty minutes. Now we were trapped in the car, waiting it out.I slumped in the driver’s seat, arms crossed, glaring at the rain pounding the windshield. Xavier, meanwhile, was burning through his phone battery playing some offline game like it’d magically fix our situation. No clue how long this storm would last, and walking anywhere meant turning into a soaked mess. Like it or not, we were sleeping in this car tonight. The day had been long—eating junk food, driving for hours, barely stopping. At some point, exhaustion hit me like a truck. The steady drum of rain turned into a wei

I clung to Xavier's hand as we hurried after the old man through the woods. His flashlight barely cut through the darkness, and the drizzle made everything feel like some weird nightmare.I was scared—like, really scared. But Xavier was holding my hand like he was the one who needed it, so I didn’t pull away. I could practically feel his nerves through his death grip on my fingers. Weirdly enough? I was kinda glad for the storm. Without it, he’d never have dragged me out here like this. There was something hanging in the air between us, but I was too busy trying not to freak out to figure out what."How much farther?" Xavier demanded, voice tense. His grip tightened even more—my fingers were going numb. Every thunderclap made me jump, my whole body shaking. I was barely holding it together. I needed walls. A roof. Now."Just up ahead," the old man called back, not slowing down.Xavier muttered under his breath, "Yeah, sure," eyeing the guy like he might turn into a serial killer any s

NarratorThe dinner was delicious. Zoe quietly sipped on her mushroom soup, but Xavier looked everywhere for clues. He had seen many shady people in his life and this old man was very shady. A lot of things he said did not match what Xavier was seeing around the cabin. The place was too well-kept for an old man's cabin in the woods. "So, your son's a mechanic?" Xavier started with small talk."Yes." The old man gave a short answer and focused on the toasted cheesy garlic bread on his plate. "Why settle in the woods where rarely any car passes? Why not get a job at some workshop in the town?" Xavier pushed casually."The road busier than you imagine. This is our family cabin. My grandfather built it. My ancestors were gatherers. Woods worked in our favor for generations. It was only honorable to stay." The old man did not meet Xavier's eyes while answering and Xavier found that odd. Usually, liars don't look in the eyes while talking.Xavier let Spike sniff out any suspicious scent
