Chapter Ten: A First Message

Adam returned to his small room late that night.

The road was quiet, and the city that had slowly begun to feel familiar seemed different that evening.

He wasn't thinking about the streets.

Or the cold.

Or even the exhaustion weighing down his body after a long day of work.

He was thinking about the advertisement.

A small sheet of paper between the library shelves...

yet it carried a much bigger question:

Did he have the courage to start over?

He sat on the edge of his bed and placed his bag beside him.

The room was simple.

A small bed.

An old desk.

And a laptop he had kept from his previous life.

In the past, he had opened that laptop to study and plan a future that everyone else had designed for him.

But now...

he opened it to look for an opportunity.

He turned on the screen.

The cursor blinked in front of him.

He typed the message.

Then read it.

He didn't like it.

He deleted it.

He wrote another message.

Then deleted that one too.

It wasn't the person who had posted the advertisement he was afraid of.

He was afraid of himself.

For the first time, he wasn't introducing himself by his family name.

There was no one there to say:

“He is so-and-so's son.”

There was no money to open doors for him.

No status to make him different.

He had to say only one thing:

“I can do this.”

He closed the laptop.

He thought he wouldn't send it.

He lay down on the bed, but sleep wouldn't come.

His thoughts kept returning, again and again.

He remembered the mansion.

He remembered the university he had stopped attending.

And he remembered his father's gaze, the one that always seemed to tell him that the world had no mercy for those without power.

Then he remembered the library.

The scent of books.

And that strange feeling that he had found a place that resembled him.

He opened his eyes shortly before dawn.

He sat up.

Then turned the laptop on again.

This time, he didn't think for long.

He typed a simple message:

“Hello, I saw your advertisement regarding the need for a French translator. I have a good knowledge of the language, and I would appreciate the opportunity to submit my work. Thank you for your time.”

He read it one final time.

It wasn't a perfect message.

It didn't contain any grand promises.

But it was honest.

And right now, he needed an honest beginning.

He pressed the send button.

He continued staring at the screen for several seconds.

Then one word appeared before him:

Sent.

He took a deep breath.

Nothing in the room had changed.

He hadn't become rich.

His fear hadn't disappeared.

But something inside him had changed.

Because for the first time in a long while...

he had made a decision no one had forced him to make.

He didn't know that this small message would reach someone who would give him the first real opportunity of his new life.

And he didn't know that a single press of the send button...

would open a door that had never existed in any of the plans others had made for him.

The first hours passed painfully slowly.

That morning, Adam went to the library as usual, but he was slightly different.

Every now and then, he checked his phone.

Looked at the screen.

Then slipped it back into his pocket.

He tried to convince himself that he wasn't waiting for anything.

But the truth was obvious.

He was waiting.

The message wasn't simply a job application to him.

It was the first door he had knocked on with his own hand.

And that was why he was afraid it might open...

or close.

The library owner noticed his distraction.

As he arranged some books, he said:

“You look like you're waiting for some news.”

Adam smiled.

“Maybe.”

“Good news?”

Adam looked toward the shelves.

“I don't know yet.”

The man chuckled softly.

“Then it must be important news.”

Adam didn't answer.

He didn't want to explain a feeling he didn't fully understand himself.

There was a strange fear inside him.

Part of him wanted to succeed.

Another part was afraid of failing.

Because this time, failure wouldn't mean failing an exam as a student...

It would mean failing as someone who had tried to stand on his own.

That evening, while he was returning a book to its place, his phone vibrated.

He stopped for a moment.

He looked at the screen.

A new message.

It wasn't from his mother.

Nor from his friend.

It was from the person who had posted the advertisement.

He opened it slowly.

“Hello, Adam. We received your message. We need a short translation sample to assess your level. If the work is suitable, we will contact you.”

He read the message once.

Then again.

It wasn't an acceptance.

But it wasn't a rejection either.

And for now, that was enough.

He sat down on the nearby chair, feeling something small stir inside him.

Finally...

someone had seen what he could do, not who he was.

He returned to his room that night, but he didn't feel the same loneliness he had felt during his first few days in the city.

He opened his laptop again.

A short text was waiting for him to translate.

He stared at it for a long moment.

Then he began working.

It wasn't easy.

He checked every word.

Searched for the most accurate meaning.

He didn't want to simply transfer the words...

he wanted to carry the feeling behind them.

Hours passed without him noticing.

When he finally raised his head, it was already midnight.

He looked at the page in front of him.

He smiled.

He didn't know whether he would get the job.

But for the first time, he felt that he had something he could offer the world.

Something that had nothing to do with his family name.

Or his father's wealth.

Or the place where he had been born.

Something he had built himself.

The following morning, he sent the translation.

Then he waited.

Without knowing that this small step would become the beginning of a long journey...

a journey that would take him from a small room in a strange city to places he had never even dreamed of while living in his old mansion.

After sending his first translation, Adam didn't sit around waiting for everything to change.

He knew that one opportunity couldn't build a future.

The next day, he went out with a small notebook and began searching.

He wasn't looking for an important position.

Nor a luxurious office.

He was looking for any door he could knock on.

He entered small cafés frequented by students and read the advertisements posted on the walls.

He visited printing centers, offices that handled documents, and even a few shops that sold used books.

He would ask calmly:

“Do you need someone to help with translations?”

Most of the time, he heard the same answer:

“No.”

Or:

“Leave your number, and we'll contact you.”

And he knew that many of those numbers would never be called.

But that didn't stop him.

He had learned from the past few days that doors didn't always open on the first knock.

One evening, he returned to the library carrying several small sheets of paper.

The library owner looked at him and smiled.

“Looks like you've become a hunter of opportunities.”

Adam laughed for the first time in days.

“Maybe.”

The man sat down across from him.

“And did you find anything?”

Adam looked at the papers.

“A few small things.”

“And small things don't appeal to you?”

Adam shook his head.

“I used to think only about big things.”

He fell silent for a moment.

“A prestigious university... a great future... a high position.”

Then he smiled sadly.

“But I'm beginning to understand that big things don't start out big.”

The library owner took an old book from the shelf.

“Look at this book.”

He opened it.

“Before it became a book, it was nothing more than blank pages.”

Adam looked at him.

“Then someone wrote the first page.”

The man returned the book to its place.

“What matters is that you write the first page.”

The sentence stayed in Adam's mind.

That night, he didn't just search for translation advertisements.

He began learning how to present himself.

How to write a better message.

How to provide a sample of his work.

How to make others see the value in something he had once considered ordinary.

As the days passed, he began receiving more replies.

Some were rejections.

Others asked him to complete a small trial.

Translate a paragraph.

Review a text.

Correct a few words.

They weren't jobs that would change his life.

But they were steps.

And Adam was discovering something new:

The knowledge he had carried with him from his old life wasn't a burden...

It was the only capital no one could take away from him.

Late one night, as he was closing his laptop, a new message appeared.

A short message.

But it was different from the ones before it.

“We have another text that needs translating. Can you handle it?”

Adam stared at it for a long moment.

Then he smiled.

For the first time since he had left...

he felt that the road ahead was no longer simply an escape.

It was a beginning.

A door leading toward a part of herself she had neglected for too long. Adam, meanwhile, found himself waiting for her replies as well. He wasn't waiting for her love. Nor was he
