CHAPTER 63

CALLIE

THE TRUTH THAT CUTS

The moment the PI asked that question, the room went completely still.

“Did you guys know who Marco was?”

Confusion crossed the room in an instant as we all stared at the PI like he had suddenly grown two heads. The question made me question all the things I've ever known about him. If they were true or just made up.

I glanced instinctively at Santiago, then Matteo, then Sienna, but no one answered immediately. Of course there was going to be no response.

CHAPTER 69CALLIETHE EAST WINGI literally set the stove, placed the pot and diced myself into the pot to cook. How courageous ca—sorry….. How stupid can I be?I realized it late, but the first thing I realized after they dragged me away was that courage has a very short lifespan. A lifespan that's shorter than that of a mosquito. Courage burns bright when you need it to get through iron gates and into rooms where monsters sit comfortably on velvet couches. But once the door closes behind you, and the sound of the person you love voice is ripped out of reach, courage fizzles out into something quieter. Then it transforms into something shakier… something we all know as fear. The guard gripped my hand tightly, another one walking beside us as we walked down the corridor. Their presence was heavy and wordless and their boots echoing against polished marble floors that were far too clean for a place I was sure was soaked in so much blood. My instinct screamed at me to push them off me

CHAPTER 68MARCOTHE SOUND OF HER VOICEAt first, when that guard walked in and mentioned a girl refusing to leave then putting Callie's name to the unknown girl’s face, I thought the universe was playing some kind of stupid prank on me by bringing someone with the same name. But the moment I walked into the living room, to see MY Callie staring back at me, my heart shifted from the left side of my chest to the right. I couldn't fucking believe it. How the hell did she find me? Why is she here? And why is she here alone?I watched her converse with my father, completely dumbstruck and unable to say anything. I just stared and tried to regulate my heartbeat. Then she said those words that snapped me out of my reverie and made the world stop the second she said it. “I’m not leaving here until you come with me, reject me… or until you kill me.”The words slammed into my chest like a physical blow and knocked the air from my lungs. For a moment, I forgot how to breathe, where I was o

CHAPTER 67CALLIE THESE GATES DON’T OPEN FOR MERCYOkay… Maybe this is where I die because even if the gun is placed to my head… I'm not leaving this place. The gun didn’t tremble in his hand, that was the first thing I noticed. The barrel was steady and aimed straight at my chest like he'd done this a thousand times before. He probably had.My heartbeat thundered so loudly in my ears that I was sure he could hear it, and taste the fear rolling off me in waves. Even if I tried to mask it up with courage.I stood rooted to my spot trying to look him in the eyes rather than the barrel of the gun. I refused to flinch or take a step back. If I did, everything I’d built the courage to do since we began our search for Marco, would crumble right here at these gates. “I said leave,” the guard repeated, his finger tightening slightly on the trigger.Oh Selene, don't let me die here. I know I'm stubborn, but let me get off this once. The other guards had spread out now—four of them, all arme

CHAPTER 66MARCO THE WEIGHT OF BLOODI didn't know if to be happy or relieved that this wasn't about my father anymore and I had every justifiable reason to want to watch him burn. The whole thing still clung to me even long after I left Travis behind in the lab, sinking into my bones with every step I took away from the sterile corridor. The doors sealed shut behind me in a mechanical hiss as I walked on. Thankfully, I didn't run into my father like I thought I would. I didn’t slow down or bothered to look back. That was rule number one when dealing with Alessandro De Luca’s world: never look like you're hesitating. Any moment of hesitation could place you under his scrutiny. I walked by a glass building and my reflection flashed briefly in the glass panels lining its walls and I took a look at myself. I was nothing like the man I had groomed myself to be when I ran away from my father. This version of me had a sharp jaw, calm eyes, a composed posture and the perfect son to my fat

CHAPTER 65CALLIEWHERE THE DEVIL LIVES The room felt too small for the truth we had just swallowed. The whole room was dead silent, all of us reeling in the shock of our findings. I sat there long after the door clicked shut after the PI walked out. The file felt so heavy in my hands like it was made of iron instead of paper. No one spoke or tried to add no one even breathed properly. I was sure of that. It was as if saying anything out loud would make it real in a way we weren’t ready for.Marco De Luca. The son of a monster who was technically also as violent as his father. A monster….. trying to escape another monster. No… it can't be real! Selene wouldn't fuck me over like this!My fingers trembled as I closed the file and pressed it to my chest. I could still hear the PI’s voice in my head. “Be prepared to burn”. But all I could think about was Marco’s laugh, the way his voice softened when he said my name, the way he always looked like he was bracing for something to go wron

CHAPTER 64MARCOCRACKS IN THE FOUNDATION“Someone who wants your father dead.”The words didn’t echo and they didn’t need to. They settled heavily and deliberately right in the center of my chest. I stared hard at Travis, as if looking hard enough would make him laugh and say it was a joke. But Travis had never been a man of jokes. He was all silence with sharp edges, a weapon my father trusted. .After all, weapons don't think, they only obey. Except apparently, this weapon was beginning to think..“You don’t get to say something like that and expect me to just nod,” I said slowly, shrugging my shoulders for emphasis. “So start talking… do it carefully.”Travis gave a long and tired exhale like he had been holding the breath for a long time. “You shouldn't be here, Marco.” Of course, he'll try to downplay it. “That’s funny,” I shot back. “Because I was about to say the same thing to you.”His mouth twitched as I fixed my gaze on him. He glared at me from under his lashes like he
