It’s been a week and Ben is coming over today to get started on rebuilding the shed.

I hear a large truck coming down the driveway. The supplies for the shed are being delivered, finally. I was ready to get back to painting.

I’m glad they are here today because I am expected my mother tomorrow and it would just give her another reason to be snippy if they were late.

Two men get out and start unloading materials onto the lawn in front of the Bunkie.

I am eager to see Ben again, so I grab my phone and dial his number.

“I’ve been waiting for you to call” he answered right away.

“But how did you know if me was calling?”I asked a little weirded out.

“Lucky guess and I heard a large truck with a lot of supplies headed that way about twenty minutes ago” he said.

That makes sense he does live down the road.

“When can you start?” I asked.

“Lucky for you, right now,” he said, “I’ll be over soon.”

Shortly after we speak Ben shows up in on a big red motorcycle.

“Nice ride” I said.

“Maybe one day I’ll take you for a ride on her” he said smacking the leather seat behind him.

He gets off the bike and hangs his helmet on the handle. He sees the material on the lawn and jokes “Looks like we are going to be spending a lot of time together”.

“I guess it depends how long it takes you to build this shed” I joked.

“It’s going to take me long if I don’t get started” he said as he walks over to the pile of supplies.

Ben spends the rest of the morning measuring and cutting the frame for the new shed. After a couple of hours, I bring him out a sandwich and a pitcher of grape kool aid.

“This looks like a perfect time to take a break” Ben said when he sees me coming outside.

“I hope you’re hungry” I tell him.

He grabs the sandwich and takes a bite “I am famished” he said with his mouth full.

“How long do you think this will take you?” I asked pointing at the base of the shed.

“Probably about a week weather permitting” he said taking another bite and then a drink of juice.

He finished his sandwich and gets up to go back to work.

“I’ll leave you to it” I said but Ben was already so busy in what he was doing I doubt he heard me.

I spend the rest of the day cooking a spaghetti sauce to freeze while he works on the shed. I should be practicing my magic but it would feel weird with him here.

The sun is starting to set, and I decide to check to see how he is doing. He’s made a lot of progress and has started to build part of the frame for the new shed. It might not even take him a week.

“What do you think so far?” He asked walking up next to me. I could smell his cologne, and it smelt great.

“You’re doing an excellent job” I told him, “I made spaghetti for supper if you’re hungry.”

“If you don’t stop feeding me, I might never leave” he joked.

“It’s the least I can do while you work out here all day.”

We go inside together, and Ben sits down at my table. I serve him a plate of spaghetti and sit down with him.

“This is the best sauce I have ever tasted” he exclaimed after taking a few bites.

“Thanks, it’s a family recipe” I smiled.

When he’s finished eating, he looks at me with his piercing green eyes. I can’t help but wonder what else he knows but isn’t telling me.

“Come on you have to tell me something, how do you know about witches?” I pleaded.

He starred at me for a minute, and I didn’t think he was going to answer me.

“My best friend is a witch” he told me, “He trusted me with his secret when we were young, and I have always kept it for him.”

“What is his power?” I asked.

“He can make himself invisible” he answered, “he used to really mess with me before I knew about it.”

I’ve never met anyone with that power. Invisibility would be way cooler than setting things on fire.

“That’s really cool” I said, “I wish I could control my power.”

“You will learn eventually, you have to believe in yourself” he encouraged me, “you can’t be the only witch who struggles to control their powers?”

“I’m the only one in my family” I said.

“Stop worrying so much about it” he said.

“That’s easy for you to say” I grunted, “how many people have you almost killed?”

“Actually, a couple” he said dropping his gaze to the floor.

This seemed like a touchy subject.

“It wasn’t my fault though. Being a firefighter is a big responsibility and sometimes the decisions you make will cost people their lives” he explained.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t realize” I said.

“Why don’t we go outside and have a fire, you have plenty more burnt wood to get rid of” he suggested changing the subject. He was really good at that.

“Alright” I said.

We go back outside to the fire pit in my backyard. It’s one of my favourite things about this place. There is a beautiful sitting area and a garden back here.

“Show me how you do it” he said.

“I feel like you aren’t telling me everything” Tyler said during the car ride. He knew I was an awful liar. “I don’t have time to explain everything to you right now” I snapped and I didn’t want to anyways. “We have some time and you look like you need to get some things off your chest. Come on you know I’m here for you.”“If you thought I was crazy you before” I laughed, “you might thing I belong in a nut house now.”“No, I’ll believe you no matter how crazy it all sounds- I promise.” He sounded sincere. I started to tell him about my soul living forever and how I’d been around for over 500 years. I told him about all the lives I’d lived; even the one I where I was a hunter. Then I told him about how I screwed things up with both Ben and Rod; which in some weird way was the most painful part. “Tyler I was responsible for building the hunter army that is hurting all those witches.”“Clara you know that wasn’t your fault right?”“That’s where you’re wrong. I was their lea

I’m back outside my bunkie, oh how I missed this place and the days where all I had to worry about was lightning forests on fire. I turn around and the shed hasn’t been burnt down yet. It worked and the crystal is gone just like the dragon told us. Even though I am not in any immediate danger I want to talk to my mother as soon as I can. I call her cell phone- no answer, we were going to have a serious talk about this. On the bright side, now I had an idea of where to look for her. But I needed help, going alone would be too dangerous and I only had once chance at this. Now that I know how to teleport I travel to the cabin where Ben’s staying, this is going to come in handy. I spot his motorcycle and the small fire truck out front; good he’s here. I run up to the door and knock hard. “Hello” he opened the door. Once he saw who I was there was a flicker of disbelief. They say you have one second to see someone’s true reaction on their face and I know he recognizes me. “B

I remember the kings voice warning me “not all the lives are good.” Like he knew all along, but didn’t want to tell me. I turn towards him and he has a shameful look on his face “why didn’t you warn me.”“Somethings you have to find out on your own Clara” he sad sadly. I had one life left to remember and it was the worst one I’d ever lived; it also happened to be my last life. I was a hunter and not just one of them, their leader. I’m so ashamed I once fell to dark magic and even worse - Damien was my lover. I had helped him slaughter so many witches. Or more like he had helped me. Tears came to my eyes, I was the reason they were so strong. Damien was in a different body which explains why I didn’t recognize him before. His soul was too evil, I had blocked him out. It was my idea to create the ritual with the elemental powers. All of this was my fault. The evil I created got my mother and Hope killed. A small part of me missed the feeling of being so powerful from stealing

Why should I make a deal with you when I can just melt you and take the crystal once you’re dead” I yelled.“Because before you kill me I can take down at least one of your friends, I suspect you don’t want that. Plus I have something to offer you” he pleaded. “How do I know you won’t betray me like everyone else” I screamed. “Clara, your anger is not with him, he is but a protector” the king whispers to me. “We can’t trust him. He did eat me.” The last time the king and I were looking for the crystal it was for our own personal gain. “His job is to protect this magic at all costs. This crystal in the wrong hands could destroy the world- you know that.”“Listen to the old man” the dragon hissed. King Salazar was a wise man, I’d learnt many lives ago to trust him. “What can you offer me?” I pushed the magma back into the earth, I’d spare him for now. “I will give you one of my scales, they are indestructible and can be used to create potions you’ve never heard of” he of

“Thank you for freeing us” they spoke, “too long were we under control by that horrendous demon, watching all those poor people being murdered.”Have they been trapped here all these years? It must have been hundreds of years since the king and I had been here last. “We are glad to help, would you mind pointing us in the direction of a safe camp?” the king asked. “Please stay the night here. We will keep you safe, our magic is strong. It’s why the demon consumed us.” The trees creaked around us but they did not move. “Thank you, then it is settled we will make camp here for the night ” the king takes off his backpack pulling out a small tent. It doesn’t take us long to set up camp with our small sleep tents. I start a fire for us, the trees groan at the smoke. If I didn’t know any better it seemed like they wanted me to put the fire out. “Don’t worry, I won’t let it burn you” I whispered. The trees seemed to calm with my reassurance. The king and Tyler join me around th

The next morning I wake before dawn just like we planned. I grab the survival pack I assume one of the servants left for me at my door and sneak out of the palace. I find Tyler and the king waiting for me at our agreed upon location just outside the city. The king’s absence would only upset his people so he had a few trusted soldiers covering for him. I didn’t say goodbye to either Rod or Ben, they were both furious with me. Good thing I was probably going to die and would never have to face either of them again. “Where’s Rod?” Tyler asked. “He’s not coming” I shot him a glance and he knew not to ask why.“Are we ready then?” King Salazar asked, “I don’t want to be gone from my people for long.”Tyler and I nodded. I was grateful he was coming at all. The king downs a potion and his tail is replaced with two human legs. “I was wondering how you were going to walk up a mountain” Tyler said. We all hold hands and I picture the bottom of the Appalachian mountain. There’s
