Dante's POV

I stared at the pool of blood at my feet a sense of satisfaction filling me, it feels good to get rid of certain people, I wish he didn't give up like some putty, it would have been a lot more fun if I got to put a few more knives in him before he died so easily,

"Don" I greeted as I picked up my phone walking towards my black Rolls Royce that sat in the middle of the dark lonely road,

"My office now" he ordered, ending the call before I could even reply, so much for going home for some liquor. Sometimes being the right-hand man to a well-known and dangerous Don has its disadvantages but like he will always say there is no better man for the job.

~~~~~
"I have already sent some men to clean up the mess you made," he said as I walked in his face buried in his paperwork with his usual scowl on his face,
"Would have loved his dearest wife to see his body on the news though" I scoffed making myself comfortable on the sofa beside the wall,
"We don't need the police on our backs right now" he replied his concentration still on his work,
"Sometimes I am grateful I picked the dirty work because I cannot be staring at papers and screens all day, what's the fun in that" I joked fishing my phone out of my pocket,
"Well someone has to do all the paperwork" he replied,
"Good thing we have you" I answered,
"Now over to the reason you are here, there is work to be done" he spoke his voice stern and straightforward finally looking at me,
"There is always work to be done" I replied sarcastically,
"This is not your usual dirty business and I need you to be as discreet as possible" he continued ignoring my sarcasm, I sat up a little noticing the seriousness in his tone,
"As discreet as possible, meaning just a few men are involved?" I asked cocking my head a little to the side and studying his facial expression as he spoke,
"No meaning only you and I are aware of this" he replied sternly,
"Hmm" I hummed, this is more serious than I thought then,
"What's the issue?" I asked in all seriousness,
"You would be going to New York," he said shocking me a little but I made sure it didn't show on my face, he never sends me so far away,
"What if something comes up and you need my help?" I asked the one question running through my mind, throughout our six years working together he has never sent me more than three hours away, he became Don at 19 right after the last Don died in an attack from an insider, he had taken us from the orphanage where we were brought up and he trained us till the day he died and Ivan took over while I became his underboss although I do more of the work of an assassin than an underboss but he understands where my strength lies,
"You would only be gone for twenty-four hours, anything higher than twenty-four hours and I would send someone to drag your ass back to Italy" he replied a smug look on his face as he said the last part, he knew how much I hated when someone is sent to babysit me or anything like that, I am used to having their backs and not the other way around, I move alone for a reason and I am feared for a reason,
"What's so important that I have to go all the way to New York?" I asked ignoring his previous comment,
"I need you to protect someone" he replied his serious look back on like it never left,
"Uhm okay, is this person like a president or something?" I asked confused as to why he would pick me to protect someone, that's like an insult to my career if you ask me,
"Oh you wish" he chuckled picking up his phone,
"I am confused right now," I said wondering where this whole conversation was heading,
"I want you to protect her," he said turning his phone screen to me, 'her'? my eyes slowly fell on the screen, a girl with her blonde hair packed in a ponytail sat with a pile of books by her side, she is obviously a nerd even her big round glasses say a lot, she looked fixated on whatever information she was getting from the book that even if an attack was to happen in the room right beside her she may not even know, but something about her made me feel there was more than what meets the eyes,
"A girl really?" I asked in a bored tone,
"A college girl if I may add" he replied a small smile on his face at my discomfort, I never deal with women ever and he knew it,
"I am not doing it" I concluded standing up to leave,
"She is going to die in less than twenty-four hours in the most brutal of ways if you don't" he suddenly said his voice going back to being all serious,
"How? What could a college girl possibly have done that would put a death penalty of that kind on her head?" I asked getting irritated by all of this,
"She witnessed a murder right by her dorm" he replied confusing me,
"And?, can't we just call the police as an anonymous caller or better still pull a few strings to ensure her safety if you so badly want to save her?" I asked with a sigh of irritation,
"The Irish Mafia is after her, she witnessed the murder of her roommate who so happens to be a member of the Irish mafia who tried to steal from them and now they want her dead too, something about her having information she is not supposed to have" he explained,
"So is this about the murder or the information?" I asked still confused,
"Both, the murder is a cover-up from what I have found out, they think her roomate must have told her a thing or two so they want to get rid of her before she goes to the police and we need to make sure neither of that happens" he explained,
"So she can't be killed and she can't go to the police too?" I asked,
"Exactly" he replied with a slight nod of his head,
"I still don't understand the aim of all of this but I will do it because I so hate that Sullivan," I said seating back down although everything in me screamed at me that this was such a bad idea, I vowed to never go on missions involving women after I killed a woman I wasn't supposed to kill just because her husband was an asshole and I had to take care of their son who still doesn't know I was the one who killed his mum,
"That's the spirit, I will send you the details now, you leave in an hour" he replied focusing his attention back on his previous work,
"Wait what? an hour?" I repeated shocked, he already had everything prepared like he knew I would agree to this,
"She may not be alive if we wait any longer so I advise you to do all you need to do before an hour" he concluded, eliciting a sigh from me. I wonder why I look forward to going home at times like I ever have free time even at home.
    Audrey's POV I could still feel his hot breath on my face meaning he was still so close so why isn't he kissing me yet?I slowly peeled my eyes open, my cheeks tinting pink in pure mortification as I took in the expression that was now on his face—pure mockery and disgust.He chuckled, a dark and unamused one, " Women...always the same. You all will never miss an opportunity to get laid" he snorted, his hands dropping from my face as I burnt him.Did he just insinuate what I think he is insinuating? How could he even think like that? How stupid can I even be, what was I expecting? I couldn't help it as tears welled up in my eyes. I am a virgin, promised myself to remain a virgin till my wedding night and here I was fully ready to let a man I didn't even know touch me all because of hormones...I thought I had trained myself better than this."You'd better eat something, you would need all your energy for what's going to go down tonight" he dismissed taking a step away from my mortifi
    Audrey's POV Blank.Empty.Shattered.Guilt.Those were the only things I could feel.It has been three hours since I saw that picture and I can't unsee it. The tears kept falling while I just sat staring at the wall in front of me, the days, weeks, months, and years Mrs.Rachel and I had spent together replayed over and over again in my mind.She was like a missing piece I didn't even know I needed. I always spent weekends and holidays with her and her husband whenever I couldn't make it back home. Mum and Dad loved her so dearly too, they would always ask to speak to her whenever they called...she always told me I made her forget that she didn't get to have a child of her own.We would have little picnics and barbecue together and then I would help her pack up and put her husband to bed before going back to my form. She made me forget how unbearable Katelyn made the dorm feel ...and now she's gone just like that...her husband will not take this news lightly. I need to get to him one
    Audrey's POV "Let's go to my office" Ivan declared, pushing himself up from where he sat but Dante’s next words stopped him."You want to marry her into the family right? There is no need to go to your office, we can talk here. She is going to be part of us soon anyway" Dante’s eyes were fixed on me once again as if waiting for a reaction from me, his words calm yet threatening. How can a man be so quiet yet scary?The other two men also turned to look at me, their expressions quite different from Dante’s, the man who just walked in had the most horrific look on his face and that was all I needed to know that whatever it was he wanted to say I was going to hate it."This isn't the time to act up" Ivan piped up turning to look at Dante whose eyes remained on me. "I am not acting up, Leonid can talk, I am sure Audrey here doesn't mind right?" He definitely doesn't want an answer.Leonid, it suits him perfectly."Audrey please excuse us" Ivan totally ignored Dante, his voice commanding
    Audrey's POV I stood in front of the little mirror in the bathroom with mixed feelings in my heart.I was dressed in the same gown I had on when I was brought here, my bouncy and shiny blonde hair looking dry and frizzy. Although there were no eye bags under my eyes I felt utterly exhausted even having just woken up from my little fighting session. I feel miserable and my appearance is giving that off properly. The thought of being married to a stuck- creepy guy has kept me uneasy all afternoon, calling it a fake marriage doesn't even make me feel any better."Miss Audrey" A voice called out snapping me back to the life that has become my reality."I will be down soon" I yelled hoping whoever it was could hear from outside the door."Don Ivan says they can't start till you are down" If J wasn't uncomfortable with eating with them before, I sure am now.I didn't bother giving her a response and she didn't say anything else either. I sighed deeply to myself preparing myself for whatev
    Dante’s POV "Poisoned food, really?" I threw my hands in the air in anger and frustration at how gullible Ivan was being. The tension from our earlier conversation and fight still lingered between us making everything much more heated. "I believe her," he said flatly. He walked past me taking a seat at his desk."You believe a naive 20-year-old college girl who was just brought nine hours away from home? Of course, she would feel like she was poisoned, she was brought here against her will" I threw my hands up in exasperation. Ivan has been frustrating and annoying since I brought Audrey here. First, he wanted her safe at all costs to the point of sending me hours away, something he has never done before and now he is trusting her over Deborah who has lived with us for years. He is definitely not saying something."That girl is smarter than you think and I know for sure she wouldn't raise an alarm if there isn't any. She knows very well what that would mean for her" The certainty in
    Audrey's POV I burst into laughter clutching my stomach as tears threatened to spill from my eyes."You are so funny" I continued laughing, totally ignoring the large scowl on his face at my reaction. I guess Mafia men don't like their jokes being laughed at...but they are jokes for a reason, aren't they? "I am just a twenty-year-old girl waiting to finish college, get her business degree, and get a job and you are asking me about marriage. Really?" I managed to say."The perfect age," He said, his voice dead serious. That's all been picked? These Mafia men have a big problem, I am sure of that. "You are serious aren't you?" I mummured blinking blankly at him."I am glad you have realised that" "You want me to get married to you?" I asked before I could stop myself. I have always read about such types of marriages but never in a million years, did I think I would find myself His lips curled in a smirk causing my heart to drop...it has to be him right? At least he is nice compar
