Eden’s Point of View
Tracing the scalpel with perfect precision, I cut open the flesh, making an incision; sweat dripped down my jaw, my breaths came out shallow, I was basically gasping for air at this point.
I still don’t know why I get so nervous whenever a person is laying on the operating table.
Especially when the person is a child.
“Vitals?” I asked just before I commence surgery, the case was delicate, and I fear the outcome of the surgery. I am aware I shouldn’t do it, because I wasn’t a pediatric surgeon, but time was wasting, and this boy will not make it before a consultant come in.
Even if they use a chopper he won’t.
I was sure I could do it, but why am I so scared now?
“BP is at 115 over 80, heart rate is 85, and Saturation is 96%,” Nurse Luke replied promptly, I nodded my head because the vitals was good enough.
I can do it, I encouraged myself, and almost immediately my trembling hands slipped and my eyes widened when the very precise scalpel punctured something.
“What is that?” I asked my surgical assistant, Dr. Farha.
“That is the superior vena cava.” She answered with the same panic, and I felt my chest tightened.
Fuck, I am fucked.
“The patient is hemorrhaging.” She announced, and almost immediately, the alarm sounded from the machines.
“Vitals!” I demanded.
“Pressure is dropping, heart rate is rising, 140 and still rising! We are losing oxygen.” Nurse Luke yelled at me, while I tried to fix the damage I caused, I could barely see anything, the entire chest was filled with blood.
“Clamp.” I announced trying to steady my breathing, I collected it from the scrub nurse as I held the damaged blood vessel together.
“I need suction.” I called out to one of the standby nurses who hurriedly wheeled the suction machine towards us.
“No pulse—he’s flatlining!” Nurse Luke yelled again.
“Compressions!” Yelling out, then Farha gets with the compression, I sutured the wound as fast as I could.
“He’s stabilizing.” That was the only word I needed to hear at this point.
****
“How was the surgery?” I jolted slightly; the parents of the boy were in front of the emergency room.
Worry lined their faces, especially the mother whose eyes were swollen, they had been skeptical about letting me do it, but the mother was willing to take the risk with me, and I am glad I didn’t fail.
“He is fine, the surgery was a success.”
Their gasps were of both shock and relief.
“Thank you so much, doctor.” The mother’s thanks were my everything, and once again, I was filled with a sense of fulfilment.
“You did great in there, doc.” My assistant Farha, and Lisa the scrub nurse, pulled me into a hug, I guess they noticed how tensed I have been, and I needed the hug.
“Thanks to you both, my life saver.” I smiled. “I owe you dinner.”
“Don’t mention.” Lisa grinned also.
“Doctor Eden!” Anna, secretary to the director, called holding some files close to her chest, and I paled. “You are summoned to the office of the director.”
The director of Montclair Medicals, also known as my father, needed me to be in his office.
“Why did you do it?” He snapped and I flinched, I didn’t plan to be met with such level of hostility.
“It was a success.” I answered defensively.
“It was a delicate one, and you are not even qualified for the surgery!” He snapped. “What if the boy had died, what would you have done?”
“The boy would have died if I hadn’t attended to him, we were the second hospital they referred him too.” I defended. “I just couldn’t turn them away when I knew I could do it.”
That was a lie, I was uncertain also.
“That’s all the more reason you should have turned them away! If things had gotten worse, we don’t have the funds for a chopper.” He yelled at me.
“He won’t even last that long.” I retorted.
“We both know this hospital is at its last days, I don’t want to ruin the image my mother suffered so hard to build. I made it clear; don’t take extreme cases you would be unable to handle. And the reports—”
He slammed the files on the table.
“You punctured the vena cava during surgery?” I fell silent. “You are not a bloody intern anymore, Eden, you have done surgeries for 2 years. You shouldn’t be at the stage where you puncture anything, especially at such delicate case.”
I bit down on my lips.
“I can’t wait for Evangeline to be done with med school; she seems to have better potential than you.” He slammed those words that I have always heard since I was a child. He had always compared my little sister to me, and now even though she isn’t even a surgeon yet, he still did the same shit.
“The fact remains the surgery was a success despite the complications, and that just added to our good image.”
“You are suspended, Eden.” His voice was stern, he didn’t have any reason to do it, but he just did it. “Let Doctor Logan take over from you.”
In anger, I pulled the stethoscope hanging on my neck and slammed it on his table before leaving his office.
“I hate my father so much.” I texted Uriel, my fiancé, “I think I might quit, I can’t stand him!”
I texted again, but there was no reply.
Fuck. This won’t do; I am going to find him.
I pulled out of the driveway in my Toyota Mirai, realizing just how bad of a fiancée I am to Uriel. Due to my heavy schedule, I barely responded to any of his text during the week.
Maybe I needed this suspension.
I could use the opportunity to bond with Uriel, and then we can plan our wedding with a clearer head.
Throwing the keys in my pocket, pausing slightly when I noticed the door was opened; he wasn’t usually this careless.
Hesitantly, I pushed the door opened, my eyes darting around suspiciously, the living room was empty, and my eyes fell on the half-filled champagne glasses on the table.
Dd Uriel have a visitor?
I wondered as I made my way up the stairs, I heard a sound and my heart tightened, cold sweat popping from my forehead, and I followed the sound to the bedroom door.
“Argh! Um… Yeah, harder!” I stood frozen in front of the door, my eyes glossy with tears from the disbelief. The moan was accompanied by wet smacking sounds, the sounds of bodies slapping together, creating a twisted rhythm that made my head spin.
Not only because I just found out that Uriel was cheating on me, but because the voice of the woman he was with sounded so familiar.
“Fuck, you are so tight.” I heard him groan. “Your stupid sister won’t even let me touch her. She is always too busy.”
“You shouldn’t even compare us.” Her high-pitched squeals echoed again. “Ugh! Yeah… Oh, God, yes!”
I stood there as I tried to catch the pieces of myself, wondering if I should leave or go inside, I decided on the latter, I stormed in.
Uriel, and Evangeline, my half-sister was naked, I was soon overwhelmed with the intense feeling of disgust and rage.
“What the hell are you two doing?!” I screamed.
Theron’s Point of View“What do you think you are doing?” I heard Eden’s voice from behind me; I glanced briefly at her. She was still in the doorway, she got inside, and closed the door. “Why are you out of bed? You haven’t been discharged yet.”I was already so tired of staying in the hospital, it was so boring, so I took off the patient gown I was wearing. It was so painful, the bullet had damaged some vessels around my collarbone area, so my right arm hurts like a bitch, the nurses placed an arm sling on it, even though it makes the pain easier to bear, it has greatly hindered my movements because I am right-handed.After struggling to bring my pants to my waists with one hand, I am unable to slip the button on my pants, apparently you need two hands for something like that. That was what I was struggling with when Eden’s voice interrupted me, but I am quite glad she was here, she could help me. “As you can see, I am trying to get myself discharged.” I confessed leaving the but
Eden’s Point of View “With the condition of the assailant it’s difficult to tell who the victim truly is.” One of the policemen said with a small frown on his face, and his colleague stifled a small laugh.“And what is that supposed to mean?” I asked folding my arms across my chest.“According to the patient report, the victim Nico Colombo suffered severe injuries to his face, and neck, including and not limited to a broken nose, jaw and collar bones, he also lost three teeth. It’s difficult to believe it was just self-defense? According to the CCTV footage, the gun was knocked out of his hands the moment the last shot was fired.” Anger slowly began to seep into me.“Coupled with the fact that the person who attacked Nico is a diagnosed psychopath, this calls for serious concern. We believe the excessive use of force should be monitored, and then the victim—”I interrupted him sharply.“Do you even hear yourselves?” I questioned stepping forward, my eyes flickering between the two of
Eden’s Point of ViewA small frown knitted on my forehead as I wobbled out of the ward only to be met with Thorne some centimeters away from the door, I sucked in a deep breath, glanced at him briefly before trying to walk away.I became stunned when he suddenly grabbed my arms, and I twisted away from him sharply.“What?” I asked looking him in the eyes in confusion.“I need to talk to you.” He said, and I ignored him as I tried to walk pass him, he blocked me with his body. I looked around, wondering if he doesn’t realize that we were in public and he was invading my privacy in a suspicious manner.“I have nothing to say to you.” I said, as I tried to pass him again, but he stretched his legs forward as he blocked me again. “Thorne, please, I am so tired.”“I need to speak to you.” He grabbed my arms, and dragged me off to a more secluded place, and this time I didn’t struggled with him, because I knew he wasn’t going to let me go, and yelling would only draw unnecessary attention t
Theron’s Point of View“Won’t you come closer to me?” I asked curiously, my eyes never leaving Eden’s glossy eyes, she stared hard at me before her legs moved nearing me. There was a light feeling in my chest, feels like a small vibration, as she got to the edge of the bed.“You don’t look very happy to see me awake.” I teased, as I pulled her to sit down on the bed. “Did you probably want me to die?”“Isn’t it too early for your dark jokes?” She queried, and only when her face was inches away from mine did, I notice her eyes were swollen, my gaze swept towards her plump lips that had a cut at the sides.Even though the wounds have been cleaned with no blood in them anymore, I felt anger tightened my chest once more.“Did that bastard die?” I asked curiously, and she shook her head. I should have killed him, how could anyone ever look Eden and want to hit her? She was too precious, too perfect, and too beautiful to be hit.And that animal put his hands on something so precious to me,
Eden’s Point of ViewTears wet my lashes as we pushed him into the Operating Room, he seemed to have passed out, probably from hypovolemic shock.“We need to begin a blood transfusion, right away.” I told the nurses. “Make provisions from the blood bank.”“Dr. Eden, I don’t think you should be doing this.” Felicia said as she grabbed my shoulders. “Let Dr. Johnson take this one.” She advised, and even though she was looking out for me, I felt insulted by this statement. “This is my specialty, the bullet is lodged in his chest, I can get it out.” I said with confidence. “Please unhand me.”“I know you can do it, there is hardly anyone whose skills match yours, but you are trembling right now, you mustn’t hold the scalpel.” She declared calmly. “We will make sure we save your husband, please wait outside.”My eyes flickered to Theron on the operating table, he is only there because of me, he got shot because he was trying to save me, and now they want me to wait outside?“No.” I was d
Theron’s Point of ViewMy head went blank, seeing Eden under the mercy of another man with that look in her face made the monster inside me break off their shackles, and I didn’t try to even stop it, instead I embraced the madness. I tackled the man to the ground, landing hard on him, but the gun went off anyways before slipping from his hands, I felt the wetness near my chest, I was bleeding, but I didn’t feel any pain… not in this moment.I was filled with so much hate, and malicious killing intent than to be bothered by some gunshot.Even if I was going to die, I would make sure I take this motherfucker with me. Anger bubbled inside my veins as my fist connected to his mouth, he tried to me push me off with his body, but I pressed my knees against his abdomen. I was bigger and stronger; he didn’t stand a chance against me.I punched him in the throat, connecting a heavy blow to his windpipe with the hope to realign his respiratory system. He tried to cover up, but I punched him
