Chapter 5

“The first shift”

POV Samatha

I wake up in the morning, and Kyle is still in my bed. Luckily, he’s lying on his back, and completely out. I know there will be lots of dishes after the wedding. I have a quick shower. Put my hair up in a bun. Then rush upstairs to the kitchen to start on the dishes. I am more than halfway through the dishes. When Amanda shows up. She says," Good morning, Sam," then goes about her usual duties. Nothing gets thrown at me. No rude comments. It’s like I waiting for the shoe to drop. 

 It’s almost 10:00pm when I finally catch up with the dishes from yesterday’s wedding, and today’s dishes. I go down to my room to have a long bath. Then the shoe drops. Melanie is sitting in my room. If looks could kill. 

“Hi Melanie, what’s up?” I say. She says nothing. She sits there with her death stare. I decided to skip the bath and just get ready for bed. I brush my teeth. Comb my hair and put it in a braid. I put on my nightgown, and go to bed.

When I wake up in the morning, she’s gone. What a weird world I live in. After getting up, I have a shower, then get ready for work. I head upstairs to the kitchen and remember everything is done. I wander out to the dining room and see that the tables need wiped down. This keeps me busy until Amanda shows up. Amanda gets me to prep the food for the day. The day goes by quickly. I’m feeling better about myself. “I’m a strong, confident wolf,” I say to myself. 

Amanda let me go after dinner at 7:00pm. I head down to my room, and once again, Melanie is sitting there with a death glare. This time she has a gun. She was playing with it in her hands, mumbling to herself. I can’t mind-link anyone. No one will answer. I’m a slave. 

She finally speaks." Come here now!" I move closer to her. “Come closer,” Melanie demands. Now I’m right in front of her, and she stands up and slaps me hard in the face. “You slept with my husband on my wedding night, you whore! If I kill you, no one will miss you. You're a worthless piece of garbage that nobody cares about,” she smiles. Then, she puts the gun in my face. “Any last words, whore?” Melanie asks. I’m thinking about what to say. What would be my last words? I’m so tired nothing comes to me. 

I hear a growl. It scares me, and when I look around to see where the growl came from, once again I realize it’s me. My hand turns into claws so fast that I swipe the gun out of her hand. The gun Flys against the wall and lands on the floor. Melanie looks shocked. She shifts. She turns into a silver wolf with red eyes. Then I felt the pain of my first shift. I feel my bones snap, and my flesh stretch. Melanie’s wolf, Sarah, lunges at me. I’m only halfway changed. Gabriel jumps out of the way, and finishes shifting. I see big white paws, but I no longer control my body. Gabriel lets out a growl so loud it feels like it shakes the walls of the room. Sarah is no match for my wolf. Gabriella lunges at Sarah so fast that she has no time to react. Gabriella is on top of Sarah, beating the crap out of her.

“Stop!” I hear a familiar voice yell. However, Gabriel continues to beat Sarah and is now choking her within an inch of her life. Suddenly, Kyle wolf Darius slams into Gabriel, knocking us off Sarah. He commands Sarah to shift, and she does. Melanie is standing there, dazed and confused. 

“Get out!” Darius yells at Melanie. Melanie runs for her life. Then it’s just Gabriel and Darius. Darius changes back to Kyle. He looks sad and hurt. “I’m so sorry, Sam,” Kyle says. I will never let her touch you again. She has no right. Then he turns and walks out of the room.
