The whole building was quiet, it had always been like this. Anytime blood spills or anyone dies, silence follows. This silence leaves me alone with the voices in my head.
I poured my self a drink from the bottle of wine I promised myself not to touch, ignoring the sting I felt on my shoulders and stomach. I lost two men, two great men. Marco’s child was due next month, and sadly he won’t get to see his child, Viktor wanted out, this was supposed to be his last operation, but he was gone too. I promised my men protection, and I failed woefully tonight. I was so close to losing most of them tonight, one crazy thing I hate is losing my men, I prefer to lose money instead.
Money can always be replaced, but my men can’t be replaced, they are loyal to the core. And loyalty was hard to get, I took a huge gulp from the wine, allowing it to burn my throat. Miguel was once planted as a spy in the Fords household, instead he had a thing with one of the enemies daughter, who is now my wife.
I stared at the untouched plate Eliz brought in few minutes ago, right now food was just pointless, it was the last thing on my mind.
I heard the door creak open but I didn’t move, it was probably Eliz again.
“Diego.” I heard that familiar soft voice, she stood at the door barefooted wearing one of the pajamas that was initially shopped for her run away sister.
“I knocked but I didn’t get a response.” She added, she hesitated a bit not knowing if she should step in or not.
“You haven’t eaten.” She said looking at the direction of the tray of food.
“I am not hungry,” I replied, not looking at her.
“But you need to regain your strength, you lost a lot of blood tonight and…”
“What a caring wife doing her wifely duties, don’t forget our marriage is only real on paper, we both don’t have feelings for each other.”
She flinched, I noticed the sadness in her eyes and that made me regret the words I just spoke. I didn’t mean to say it that way, I was still annoyed by what I saw when she looked at Miguel, it wasn’t just shock or pain.
It was something else, and I didn’t fail to recognize it.
“You are right though, I know that, we both know that. But I don’t understand why you’re so angry.”
“Maybe because you were looking at another man, while I was bleeding right in front of you.”
She gasped loudly,
“That is not fair Diego, I was literally worried about you.”
“No, you stopped worrying as soon as your ex lover stepped in,” I said, stepping closer to her, I could feel the air between us thicken, the smell of her and the way she trembled as she swallowed.
“You should eat something, Diego.” She said stepping back, I caught her by the wrist pulling her closer to my chest as I wrapped my hands around her waist.
“What if it’s something else I want to eat,” She froze immediately, her eyes widening.
I leaned closer to her making sure she felt my breath on her face, her breath hitched but she didn’t try to move away.
“I think I’ve lost my appetite but I will like to try something different, something more sweeter.”
“Diego,” she whispered, trembling in my hands.
“Isabella,” I whispered back.
“Maybe it’s time to fulfill our matrimonial duties, or what do you think. Is it too early or too late?”
“It’s been long I got laid, I want to remain devoted to my wife, the De’ Luca’s don’t commit adultery and it won’t start with me.”
Her eyes searched mine as if she was trying to see the truth, I could see the fear, doubt and uncertainty, but I saw something else that mirrored my hunger. Maybe this hunger will be killed once I have her in my bed. What the fuck was I doing, holding her and staring at her lips as I if I want to devour. This was strictly business.
Love is sickening and I don’t do love, I can’t afford to fall in love again, again? That wasn’t love but an obsession likened to addiction. I should give her space before this worsens.
I just want her in my bed, nothing else. I let her go and turned my back to her before I did something I regret, the last thing I need right now is for her to start getting funny ideas in her head.
“You have to go to bed, Isabella.” I said in a very low voice, I didn’t hear her move.
“Can we discuss our matrimo…”
“Please,” I said cutting her off entirely.
“But you brought this up Diego, I know I have my duties the same way you have yours, like you said we are married on paper, it’s a mere contract, I am a replacement, whate….”
“Let’s discuss this later.” I cut her off again.
“Just leave please.”
After a while, I heard the door open. She left already, but her smell still filled my room. I sat back on my bed, my dinner was still there untouched, but I was full of want, anger and something I didn’t have the right to feel.

Isabella's point of view I heard the sound first, the loud roars of engines, the sound of tires screeching on the floor that it hurts my ears, then the slam of car doors, I rushed to my window, pulling the curtain back.Black SUVs following each other were parked at the driveway, something seems to be wrong with the way different men stepped out so fast, then I saw him.He was half carried and half walking between two of his men, I noticed the white shirt he was wearing was torn open by the side and there was a huge red stain, I ran downstairs, barefooted with my hands trembling, my speed was likened to flash, I was so worried and scared, I knew trouble comes with the type of job he does, but this is my first time experience of seeing a crash out like this one. I could feel my heart beating against my ribs, he is my husband I should be worried about him.I watched in fear as they got him inside and laid him on the couch, the sight of him caused great fear in me, he was really in a ba
Isabella's point of view I haven’t slept, I was awake all night because I couldn’t give in to sleep. It was like every sound in the mansion now felt louder, I’ve been at alert since I found out the bit of the truth Diego told. I heard the footsteps of Eliz loud and clear, before she came to knock this morning, I didn’t reply her, she left when she didn’t get a response. My husband Diego De’ Luca, capo of the mafia.A loud knock broke into my thoughts, I just stared at the door with no plans to move or respond. The door opened and Diego stepped in, he was dressed in a black shirt different from the one he wore yesterday, he seems to like the color black, perhaps black is his favorite color. The sleeves are rolled up and the first three buttons undone like the last time. A gun holster was visibly hanged on his pants.“Morning,” he said, in a voice obviously rough from lack sleep. I stared at him and then at the gun.“Eliz said you haven’t eaten breakfast and you’ve not been responding
Isabella's point of view Diego was sitting at the head of the table, a navy blue sweat shirt replaced the black shirt he was putting on this morning, I took my seat across from him, inhaling the sweet aroma coming from the delicacy before me, the cook seems to have outdone herself, the table was filled with all kinds of food, roasted chicken, mashed potatoes, pasta, sea foods and even fine wine.“Do you always eat like this?” I asked, helping myself to a plate of pasta. He took a sip from the glass of wine in his hand, before he dropped it on the table. I watched him pick a file folder, this action made me sigh. Even at dinner, he was still working. He didn’t even bother to look up, he just nodded his head. Before I could repeat my question the double doors opened, a tall man in black suit stepped in and walked directly to Diego, he leaned close to him and whispered some words in Italian. Capo, that was the only word I could hear, even though I strained my ears to listen. Diego’s exp
Isabella's point of view I still find it hard to believe that my life had a huge turnaround all of a sudden, I was once single and now I am married. I’m a fucking Mrs!The silence was the first thing I noticed when I woke up, it was strange that I slept all through the night as it’s an habit for me to lose sleep whenever I find myself in new places.I didn’t need any reminder that I was in the De’ Luca’s mansion, it has already been stucked to my subconscious mind. For a moment, I lay on my bed enjoying the solitude, my wedding gown was still on the armchair I placed it last night, looking at it made me rethink my life.A knock on the door got my attention.“Come in,” I said pulling the sheet closer to my bodyEliz entered quietly, holding a tray filled with toasts, coffee and fruits.“Good morning, Mistress. I hope you slept well.”“I did,” I replied, I watched as she set the tray on the table, I wanted to start a conversation with her but I could hardly think of the right words to
Isabella's point of view Cameras flashed repeatedly almost blinding me, this was an evidence that the press was present. The hall belongs to the De Luca and according to their traditions, every member of their family must get married in this hall. The hall was filled up with different guests, the city’s elite, even the ones who thrived on anything that has to do with gossip were present, they were probably waiting for a mistake they can all dwell on and spread around social media. Some might think it would be the most beautiful wedding ever, only if they knew the truth. They are not aware that the bride behind the veil wasn’t the intended bride but a replacement, all they knew was that the bride is a Ford and of course I am a Ford. None of them knew I was a stand in, a replacement , a daughter who was buying help for her father with her future.I found it difficult to breathe under the gown, maybe it’s the awareness of who the gown actually belongs to, but I still held my chin up as
