Chapter 1

"Dr. Mitchell, you need to see this! The bone age doesn't match the degree of weathering!"

The forensic technicians' voices echoed through the autopsy room as my soul drifted in the cold air, nothing more than a wisp of fading mist.

Below me, several young technicians in white lab coats carefully cleaned the skeletal remains, brushing away years of accumulated dirt and debris.

Behind them stood the man I'd once respected more than anyone else in the world—Robert Mitchell, head of the forensic center and the mentor who had guided me through the early years of my career.

"Notify Homicide immediately. The victim died no more than seven years ago. Run a bone marrow DNA test and cross-check the results against the missing persons database."

Robert's voice was as calm and measured as ever, betraying not the slightest hint of emotion. He was as methodical as I remembered, approaching the case with the same precision he'd always demanded from his students.

Yet he had no idea that the skeleton lying on the examination table belonged to the very student he'd once been so proud of.

Then again, seven years was more than enough time for flesh to decay, leaving nothing behind but a pile of bones.

"What a horrible way to die," a young forensic assistant named Ethan Parker murmured as he leaned closer to examine the remains.

"Look at those deep cuts on the ribs and skull. It almost looks like the victim was tortured before they died. Whoever did this must've had a serious grudge. Maybe it was a deal gone bad in the criminal underworld."

He paused, then seemed to remember something.

"Actually, this reminds me of the Scarlet Murders seven years ago. Wasn't Chloe Bennett involved in that case? She was exposed as a traitor after double-crossing the police, wasn't she? What a disgrace to the entire force."

"Enough!" Robert snapped. The hand gripping his clipboard trembled violently for a brief moment, but he quickly regained control.

Another assistant, Oliver Carter, immediately nudged Ethan and forced an awkward smile.

"Sorry, Dr. Mitchell. Ethan's new here and doesn't know the whole story. He didn't mean any disrespect."

"He's not wrong." Robert let out a bitter laugh and slammed his clipboard onto the table.

Without another word, he turned and strode out of the autopsy room, his back rigid and his expression cold.

Just before he disappeared through the door, his voice rang out one last time. "People who betray their beliefs deserve to die!"

The room fell silent.

As soon as Robert was gone, Oliver turned to Ethan and lowered his voice to a furious hiss. "What the hell were you thinking? Didn't you see his face when you brought up Chloe Bennett?"

Ethan looked bewildered. "What did I say wrong?"

"Have you already forgotten what happened to Chloe Bennett? She was Dr. Mitchell's most cherished student, the one he had the highest hopes for.

"But at the most critical moment of an investigation, she betrayed everything she stood for, became an accomplice to a serial killer, and destroyed the key evidence. She disgraced the entire field of forensic science!"

Oliver shook his head and lowered his voice even further. "Dr. Mitchell hasn't smiled once in the seven years since that scandal. Just don't bring her up around him again."

Their words struck me like a bomb going off inside my head. Even as a bodiless soul, I couldn't stop myself from trembling violently.

When my mother learned the whole truth, she collapsed on the spot. By the time she regained consciousness, something inside her had broken. Unable to accept that I was gone, she retreated into her own world, one where I was still alive. She would set two places at the dining table, serve a slice of my favorite pie, and gently call out to the empty chair across from her. "Come on, Chloe, sweetheart. Eat before it gets cold." Sometimes, she'd sit there for hours, talking to me as if nothing had happened. Then reality would come crashing back, and she'd stare at the empty seat before dissolving into desperate sobs, repeating the same words over and over. "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry… I should never have believed her. Chloe, please, come home…" My father's hair turned gray almost overnight. He resigned from every position he'd held at the police department and shut himself away in my room, unable to face a world without me. Day after day, he carefully dusted my forensic science tex

If Sebastian hadn't heard that recording with his own ears, he never would have believed that the woman standing before him was a cold-blooded murderer, not in a million years. "Why are you just standing there? Come help me set the table. Dinner's ready," Isabelle urged as she carried the soup toward the dining room.Sebastian didn't move. He simply stood there, staring at her with a look that made her smile falter. "What's wrong, Sebastian?" she asked cautiously."Seven years ago…" He finally spoke, his voice so hoarse it sounded like sandpaper scraping against sandpaper. "Did Chloe really betray us?"All the color drained from Isabelle's face. The bowl of mushroom soup in her hands began to shake, sending hot liquid sloshing over the rim and onto the back of her hand. Yet she seemed completely oblivious to the burn. Forcing a smile, she tried to sound composed, but all she managed was a strained grimace. "Of course she did. I saw it with my own eyes, and all the evidence w

Sebastian's eyes were bloodshot as he took the recorder, his hands trembling, and entered my birthday. The screen flashed red."Incorrect passcode." He stared at the screen for a moment before something seemed to click. His fingers stiffly tapped in another sequence of numbers—his own birthday. This time, the lock clicked open. The moment the screen unlocked, he clutched his chest as a sharp, crushing pain seized his heart. His vision darkened, and he nearly crumpled to his knees. Robert took the recorder from his trembling hands and pressed Play. The forensic lab filled with a series of muffled yet painfully clear sounds. First came the noise of a struggle, followed by ragged breathing. Then came my final words, so faint and feeble that I could barely force them out. "Dad, Mom, Dr. Mitchell… I… don't know if I'll survive… but I want you to know that I love you." After a brief pause, my weak voice sounded again, carrying a trace of the stubbornness I'd never been able to

"Dr. Mitchell?" Sebastian stared at him in surprise. "What are you doing here?""I asked him to come." Michael stepped out of the forensic lab, his expression grave as he looked from Sebastian to my father. Complicated emotions flickered across his face. After a moment, he let out a heavy sigh. "Come inside. Both of you." The forensic lab was brightly lit, with harsh overhead lights illuminating every corner. At the center of the room, a spotlight shone directly on the autopsy table, where a battered skeleton lay motionless, partially cleared of the dirt and debris that had once covered it. The sight sent a chill through my father and Sebastian, filling them with inexplicable dread. The moment Robert saw the remains, he finally broke down. A strangled sob escaped his throat as tears streamed down his weathered face. My father stared at him in bewilderment, unable to make sense of what was happening. "Robert, what's going on?"Robert couldn't bring himself to answer. Inste

Now, her little princess was nothing more than a pile of dry bones, while the woman who had murdered her daughter basked in all the love and affection that had once been promised to her. But my heart had long since gone numb. I watched without feeling a thing as the family headed toward the movie theater, ready to enjoy a happy afternoon together. Just then, Sebastian's phone rang. It was Robert. "Sebastian, get to police headquarters immediately. Bring William, too!" Robert's tone brooked no argument. Before Sebastian could ask what was going on, the call abruptly ended. Sebastian let out a helpless sigh. "Looks like we're not seeing that movie after all."Isabelle immediately put on a sympathetic smile. "It's okay, Sebastian. Work comes first. Mom and I will take the kids to see it." Sebastian nodded, then turned to William, who had just received a call from his own department. "Dad, looks like we're heading out together." The moment Isabelle heard that, her pupils con

The day I went out on the case, the sky was overcast, with heavy clouds threatening to burst at any moment. Isabelle followed me around like a shadow, her eyes darting nervously from side to side, but I was too focused on the investigation to pay her much attention. Inside an abandoned chemical plant, I followed the clues to a concealed compartment where the key evidence against the serial killer was likely hidden. My entire task force had been working ourselves to the bone for months, and we were finally on the verge of cracking the case. I was so close to bringing everything to an end that I could almost taste the relief of finally getting my hands on the evidence. But before I could even celebrate, a dull thud sounded behind me.The killers had arrived. My heart lurched, and I instinctively shouted for Isabelle to take cover. But when I turned around, she was nowhere to be seen. A terrible sense of dread washed over me. Something was wrong. Without wasting another sec
