Mira’s POV

I approached the mass grave where I heard my mother’s body had been dumped, still clinging to the hope that it was all a mistake. That somehow, my mother wasn’t really gone, and that everyone in the pack was playing some trick on me.. That this was just some cruel joke.

“Mummy… Noo…Noo,” I whispered in between sobs as I arrived the place, my heavy steps thudded against the earth as I reached the edge of the deep, gaping pit… I still couldn’t believe this was real.

I scanned the hollow, desperate for proof this wasn't real. But when I spotted the cloth she wore the last time I saw here…torn and soiled…something inside me shattered.

The tears came hard and fast, blurring my vision. I opened my mouth to scream, but a strangled growl escaped instead. My chest tightened, air lodged in my throat. My knees buckled, and I sank to the ground, hugging my legs as a sharp, stabbing headache took over me immediately.

“Why would she leave me like this? No one even gave me a chance to mourn her properly. She was all I had.”

I forced myself to remember our last conversation…just last night. She had spoken so much, almost like she knew something. I had taken it as a sign of recovery. But now…

Did she know she was going to die? Was that why she said those things?

My mind spiraled. I held my head in both hands, trying to stop it from exploding.

A hand touched my shoulder, making me jolt. I nearly stumbled straight into the grave.

“Mira,” a familiar voice said gently. “Don't be too hard on yourself.”

It was Nathaniel, but I fondly call him Nate, and if he had not caught me, I might have as well joined my mother in that hole. And for a moment, I wasn’t sure that would have been so bad.

“Nate,” I choked, you scared me.”

My heart was still beating very fast from the shock of what almost happened, my chest heaved from trying to catch my breath.

He held me firmly, eyes full of quiet concern. “I’m sorry about your mom. Truly. But the Alpha’s asking for you. It’s urgent.”

I barely heard him. “They didn't even give her a proper burial. They just dumped her here like she was nothing…”

“I know,” he said, pulling me into a hug. His strong arms wrapped around me, grounding me like they always had.

“You have to be strong now, Mira. Stronger than you've ever been. And if you ever need a break…like the old days…you know I’ve got you, right?”

His voice was low, sure. I didn't want to let go. The hug felt like a warmth in a frozen world.

“Okay,” I said softly, wiping at my tears. I straightened my shoulders.

“Good girl.” He gave me a nod. “Now, go on. The Alpha’s waiting in the ceremony hall. Stay strong. I've got patrol duty now, but we’ll talk soon.”

He turned and headed toward the estate gate. I raised a hand and waved, unable to say more.

I took one last hopeful glance at the grave but silence met me.

Still mulling over my mother’s death, I drew a long breath, steadying myself and proceeded to the hall.

………

The pack estate buzzed with activity. Preparations for the Alpha heir’s eighteenth birthday ceremony were in full swing…decorators swarming, the scent of fresh paint and dusk thick in the air. Music floated through the hall from an open window.

How could the world be celebrating when mine had just ended?

As I stepped into the grand hall, I spotted Alpha Harold, Luna Grace, Alpha heir Liam and the head maid near the entrance. They were laughing. Cheerful. Like my mother hadn't just been thrown into a pit.

Before I could even process the wave of fury that surged through me, the head maid barked from across the hall:

“Mira! Over here quickly. We've been looking for you!”

All eyes turned to me.

I lowered my gaze to the floor as I approached, trying to bury the storm rising in my chest.

“There you are,” Alpha Harold said, his voice brisk.

“Starting now, you’ll handle all personal preparations and deliveries for Liam’s birthday. Every detail.”

I bowed my head in silence.

“This is a test, he continued. “Depending on how you perform, I’ll decide what role…if any… you'll continue to serve in this pack. Let's see if you have any of your mother’s usefulness. Don't disappoint me.”

“Hmmmm… interesting,” Liam murmured, stepping forward.

A small, unreadable smile tugged at his lips, vanishing as quickly as it came. But his gaze lingered…on me. My skin prickled.

He held out a hand. “What’s your name again?”

The moment stretched. I noticed the quick glance exchanged between Luna Grace and the head maid. I didn't take his hand

“Mhhm.. Mhhm.” I cleared my throat before replying. “My name is Mira.”

A sharp tap of heels interrupted the tension. Beta Dahlia glided into the space with practiced grace.

“Good day Alpha Harold, Good day Luna Grace. Happy early birthday, my dear Liam,” she said sweetly, slipping to his side, and brushing past me with her hip.

Her smile was all teeth and games.

“Did I miss anything?” she asked, though her eyes were fixed squarely on me and I couldn't help but wonder if I was the only one who could sense the awkward situation.

“Well.. well.. well.., my dear Dahlia, I do not think it is anything of importance to you. I was just assigning Liam’s little helper for the day.”

“I see,” Dahlia said, her gaze traveling over me, nose slightly wrinkled.

“Mira,” Alpha Harold added, I assume you know your Beta female. You both should be around the same age.”

Dahlia chimed in, voice sharp, “We might be the same age, but obviously not the same class.”

The silence that followed crackled.

The head maid, sensing the rising tension, laid a hand on my shoulder. “Come along, Mira. Let's get you started with Alpha Liam’s quarters. Carry these sheets.”

Grateful for the out, I grabbed the linens and hurried behind her. But even with my back turned, I could still feel Liam’s eyes on me.

And that was a feeling I didn't want to name.

Dahlia’s POVThe moon hung high and luminous, casting a silver sheen over the clearing as the birthday celebration wound down. Wolves laughed, danced and drank until the bonfires flickered low. But none of it mattered to me. Not the music, not the cheer, not even the stars blanketing the sky like scattered jewels. All that mattered to me was that everything had gone exactly as I planned.I stood beside Liam like I belonged there… because I did. The look on Mira’s face when she entered the hall and saw us together? Worth everything. The confusion in her eyes, the sadness she tried to mask, it made me want to laugh. She looked like she barely slept. Good. That means the spell worked. Her scent, once so alluring and potent, was now diluted. Blended with mine. Wolves were already whispering about her…questioning why Liam’s scent clung to her like perfume the day before. The embarrassment she wore like a second skin was just beginning. I wanted her to feel the weight of being invisible, u

Mira’s POVAs much as I wanted to, I couldn’t shake it off. Why could I smell my scent on Beta Dahlia?I nearly collided with Nate on my way to grab cleaning supplies to mop up the mess Dahlia had caused.“Are you okay?” Nate asked, eyes scanning me from head to toe, concern flickering across his face. “Why do you have drinks splashed all over your apron?”“Yes, yes. I am fine,” I blurted, barely thinking. “Beta Dahlia poured the drinks on me.” “What?” He barked, stepping closer, his brow hardening.Panic sparked inside me. I hadn't meant to tell him that. And even if I did, what could I explain? That Dahlia hated me? That there was something strange happening between us I couldn't yet name?“Uhhhm…sorry, Nate. That came out the wrong way,” I stammered. “I got in her way…when I was serving drinks. It was my fault.” I lied, not wanting to stir up any problems. His shoulders eased slightly. “Ok then. Just be careful, Mira. You don't want to offend the high powers,” he murmured, his f

Mira's POV I collapsed onto my cot like a puppet with its strings cut. My chest still heaved from the rush out of Alpha Liam’s chambers and Dahlia’s voice echoed in my ears like a venomous chant. I pressed my face into the scratchy pillow, trying to silence the storm inside me. My lips still tingled from Liam’s kiss. My body still hummed with the heat of his touch, but none of it mattered now. Not with the venom I saw in Dahlia’s eyes, that possessive look, like I stole something that belonged to her. Like she knew what happened between me and Alpha Liam. Did she see us? “Arrrrrgh,” my head was spinning out of control. “What have I done?” I whispered into the dark lonely room. My eyes caught the cot where my mum always slept. She was always so excited to tell me about her day even though I can’t say that I did the same and now she was no more. If only she was here right now so that I could tell her the mess I have gotten into. I didn’t even wait a whole day before I fell

Dahlia’s POVI watched from across the ceremonial hall, my fingers gripping the stem of my glass longer than necessary. The crowd buzzed around me, a blur of movement and meaningless chatter, but I heard none of it. My eyes were fixed on him.Alpha Liam.Even standing among the elders, speaking with that imposing hair that made wolves bow without question, he was breathtaking. Commanding. Mine.Or would be soon. The elders were smiling and nodding at him like proud uncles, and he returned their respect like the obedient son of the pack but I knew him better than any of them. I knew how to calm his storm, how to stroke his ego.Yet, lately, I've been noticing the long distance he has been trying to keep between us. Slipping away for long runs. Shorter tempers, longer silences.Something was off and this is definitely not the right time for distance. Tomorrow is his 18th birthday. He needs to make me his mate as soon a possible. Then, I saw her. Samantha’s daughter. The same Omega who’

Mira’s POVBeta Dahlia’s words cut through me like a knife. I was thankful to the head maid for pulling me away when she did.“Hurry up, girl, I don't have all day,” the head maid called, snapping me from my spiraling thoughts. I hadn't realized how far ahead she’d gone. I quickened my steps, clutching the stack of bedsheets tighter against my chest. We arrived at the Alpha family’s residence…towering above the rest of Pine Shadows like a watchful sentinel. It was sleek and modern, yet edged with old pack symbols carved into the stone arches. This was the first time I had ever been allowed near the Alpha’s private chambers, and I couldn't help but stare as we made our way up the wide staircase, heart thudding. At the top of the stairs, a young Omega ran up breathless, whispering urgently. The head maid turned, frowning.“I'm needed below,” she muttered, her eyes flicking to me. “Take the corridor to the right. Last door at the end. That's the Alpha’s quarters.” She paused, gaze sharp.

Liam’s POV“Shit.”It’s beginning to feel like I’m developing a reputation for being awkward. I saw the confusion in Mira’s eyes when she turned and realized it was me. And honestly, I am as confused as she is.Why do I feel so drawn to her?Kai is no help. He’s been growling in my head with a wave of excitement I can barely contain.“Her scent is so soothing, Liam. I know you can feel it too.” Kai purrs. But it’s not just the scent, it’s everything. Those piercing green eyes, that long, snow-white hair. She’s like winter and summer all at once, and I can’t take my eyes off her.As she bends to pick up the fallen sheets, her fingers trembling slightly, her breath uneven, I feel the heat surge in my gut. My hard length strains as the soft brush of her hips grazes against me while she scurries to collect the fabric. My heart pounds hard, too hard. I shift slightly, trying to focus on anything else, but it’s impossible. I should ask her why she was crying. That’s why I came here. That's
