The Gifts- Book One- Chapt Four

After school Galen was there to pick us up. Kieran ran to the car and with much excitement began to tell Galen about the incident as she climbed into the car.

“Galen, it was as if she were standing there invisible. I was able to see through her.” She looked over at me from the back seat as I got into the front seat next to Galen. “She says she saw and heard her mom.”

Galen looked over at me, “You saw your mom?”

“It was as if I was there with her. I never had anything happen like that before.” I glanced his way then looked down at my hands on my lap.

“Galen, I think Rayna has begun to develop her gift.” Kieran sounded so excited over that fact.

“So, what is this gift thing you keep speaking of?” I asked.

“Well, my gift is speed and strength. I just am not allowed to use it in this world.” Kieran answered.

“Speed and strength?”

“Yeah, I can run-up to ten times faster than any human, and stronger too.”

“Oh, I see.” I turned to ask Galen, “And what about you Galen, what is your gift?”

He glanced my way before looking back at the road. “I will tell you about it one day soon.”

“Why not now?” I persisted.

“It’s not the right time.” He answered sternly, hands gripping the steering wheel so hard his knuckles turned white.

I knew to back off.

“Okay,” I said breathlessly. It was almost as if whatever his gift is must be torture to him. I can’t help but wonder why?

Once back at the Guardian's home Galen spoke, “Kier, let everyone know I will be back soon.”

Galen then helped me out of the car then got back in and took off away from the house, leaving Kieran and me standing there alone. I looked at her perplexed at his actions, and she only shrugged her shoulders.

“Come on I will show you my gift.”

She led me to an open field, away from the house and then she took off like a shot. Before I could grasp what just happened, I could not see her anymore. I kept looking in the direction she ran off in when something tapped my shoulder; I jumped then turned to see Kieran behind me. My eyes widened I have never seen anything like this in all my life.

“See, told you I was fast.” She said with a smile. I just couldn’t believe my eyes. She seemed to be as fast as Superman in the movies if not faster.

I mean… “Wow.”

she laughed.

I must have spoken that out loud, but what I just witnessed was so incredible. Then she walked over to a boulder nearby and bent down and lifted it as if it were a feather. She then set it down and looked at me as I stood there my mouth gapped open again in shock at what I just saw. Walking over to me she said, “We all have unique gifts; even you. Now, do you believe that I can protect you?”

“Yes, I do, so what else are we able to do?” I had to ask.

“Come…” She said as she led me to a cliff with a fifty-foot drop. She walked closer to the edge and held onto my hand. I looked at her and shook my head knowing what she was thinking.

“You have got to be kidding,” I said in dismay.

She smiled and looked at me and stepped off pulling me with her. But instead of the big fall, I was expecting we both while holding hands floated gently down to the ground.

It was then I understood about the night Galen jumped out of my second story bedroom window and why when I did, I did not feel the fall.

“Wow…” I said again as I looked up at where seconds ago we stood.

“There’s more.” I heard her say near my ear. Again, she took my hand and looked at me “When I say jump, jump with me. Ready?” I nodded, and she said “Jump.” we jumped up and landed back on the ledge where we began. I looked back down and couldn’t believe we just did that.

“We can jump higher too.”

I looked at her in disbelief.

“Are you kidding? Like fly?”

“Nope, just jumping high, and I am not kidding. Remember we are not of this world. We can do things that others here cannot. From my understanding, it has something to do Earth’s atmosphere and the one sun where our world has two. It’s different than home.” She turned towards me to look in my eyes.

“Amazing, right? You will catch on don’t worry.”

We turned to walk back towards the cabin. When finally I asked her. “So, the abilities don’t work in our world?”

“Not the jumping. Only our gifts such as my speed and strength will still work. They are a part of us.” She answered. Now I am understanding.

When we got back, Galen was still unaccounted for, which did bother me. I can’t help but feel at fault about his leaving the way he did.

It was well past supper, and I was helping Kieran with cleaning the dishes. I was still concerned about my mother when, I suddenly was there again, standing right in front of her. She was looking down at her feet and standing there chained to a wall. Then suddenly as if she was aware, she slowly looked up like she was staring right at me. Then she whispered my name.

“Rayna, how did you…”

Suddenly I was back in the kitchen with Luziann and Kieran watching me with a concerned expression.

“It happened again,” I whispered, and the two nodded as if I asked a question.

“We know. It was like the last time. You became transparent only more so then the last time.” Kieran found her voice first.

“Did you see your mother again?” Luziann asked me.

I looked at Kieran, “I told mom what was happening while you were gone. She walked in just as you went transparent.”

“She saw me,” I said still not believing what was happening. “My mother saw me.”

“What?” Luziann exclaimed, “What do you mean she saw you?”

“She was standing in front of me and looked right into my eyes and said my name. She saw me.”

“That would explain why you go transparent. You are a teleporter!” Exclaimed Kieran as she took hold of my upper arms. She was excited, yet I was still bewildered.

“A what?!” I spoke aloud.

“A teleporter, don’t you see? You can teleport yourself to other places. That is why you go transparent.”

Then she frowned dropping her hands away from my arms.

“I can’t help but wonder; are you not fully able to use your gift or is this all there is? I mean, it seems you only go to a point where we are still able to see you. I can’t help but feel you are not using your gift to its potential.”

I can see what she is getting at, what if I could fully teleport myself to anywhere I wanted to go.

“This means I have to learn to harness this ability to work completely. The question is could I learn to teleport completely?” I looked at Kieran and her mother.

“I see where these thoughts are going, and I am not sure I can approve of it.” Luziann finally spoke. “We are supposed to protect you, not let you go off into danger.”

“What’s this about danger?” Bryden, Kieran’s dad walked in.

“Dad Rayna here is a teleporter.”

“She is?” the way he looked at me I can see in his eyes he knew of this kind of gift as well.

I stepped closer to Bryden and answered, “Yes sir I am, and I need to learn to harness this gift and use it to its full potential.” I looked him squarely in the eye before I spoke my next words. “I want to teleport to my mother and get her out.”

“Can it be done, dad?” Kieran stepped next to me to face her father.

“There had been only one other with the gift of teleporting, only one. If what you say is true, this would mean you have gained this ability for a reason.” He looked me in the eye, “And I am the only one who knows how to help you to control your gift to its full potential.”

“Then teach me,” I said and meant it.
