STORY 8

Ed Jones got out of his car and looked at the tall building with a sigh of mixed emotions, anxiety, fear and excitement. He headed inside, trying to embrace the excitement he felt and ignore the fear and anxiety. Ed grabbed the door handle, for some reason making a mental note of how cold the handle was but put it off to the wind chilling the metal handle and headed inside. As he walked in Ed found that there were a couple more people that were new hires there and felt a bit less special, having thought that he was the only new hire. He chuckled to himself as he thought back and felt like he’d assumed that then and sat down in the lobby with them to wait for their initiation. As he sat there Ed happened to notice a fairly good looking redheaded standing behind a cubicle but looked away, not wanting to get caught gawking. A moment later he noticed the redhead walk out from the cubicle and could not help but notice her body. Ed had to control his eyelids so they wouldn’t widen and give it away as the woman walked towards them. Ed looked away, actually fearing making eye contact first but the woman walked up to them.

“Glad ya like it.” Darla said with a smile before she turned around and waved for them to follow and Ed’s eyes dropped, checking Darla out again as the rest of the new workers walked off ahead of him; as he looked away Ed thought about how many hours he’d spent creating software and the hardware to run it on as he kept pace with the others who were going to be doing just one of the jobs it seemed, making him feel special once again, “Now we’re gonna be headin’ into the engineering lab, so it might be a little loud. We’ve got all sorts of projects going on at the moment that could be quite beneficial to everyone if we can work these kinks out. We won’t take a venture into the Research and Development department, don’t wanna run into any tests now do we?”

“What sort of tests?” One of the other guys asked, getting a chuckle from Darla that was quite sexy as well.

“That was a joke, dear. All our tests are done in controlled environments, not just inside the door.” Darla said, getting a laugh from most everyone yet Ed just managed to chuckle as they walked into a room with all sorts of machines creating the hardware for other machines and it made Ed think about how much faster things would have gone for him back in his garage days had he had an assembly line, or even anyone else helping him, “This is the hardware assembly area, where some of you will be spendin’ your time. Now let’s head up to the cafeteria and see what they’ve got cookin’ up for today’s lunch, eh?”

“We’ve got a cafeteria here?” Another female worker asked as they headed up some stairs out of the hardware assembly area; Ed thought about how much easier that would make getting back and forth between work and taking a lunch break, “That’s awesome!”

“Indeed it is. I enjoy eating here. I haven’t eaten elsewhere since I started working here.” Darla said as they walked down the hall, getting a whiff of the delicious food being cooked and it made Ed’s mouth water, “Mmm... that smells good. We have all sorts of food that gets cooked here daily and we even have a chef, but I don’t suggest talkin’ to him, he’s kind of an arse.”

Everyone chuckled as they walked into the cafeteria, finding the smell to be incredibly enticing and Ed couldn’t wait to take a lunch break to get something to eat from there yet thought about the peanut and butter sandwich he’d brought and planned on eating in his car. Darla led them into where all the food was served and stopped, smiling back at everyone as they grabbed something to eat for breakfast. “Everyone ready to get to work?” Darla asked before she looked over at Ed, “I need to speak with you though.”

“He’s a software designer and analyst as well as a hardware designer.” Darla replied with a smile as she looked at the guy before she looked over at Ed and waved him over, “My computer’s been on the fritz and I need you to take a look at it. The maintenance man said he couldn’t figure it out either so I’m hopin’ that with your expertise you can.”

“I’ve sorted a lot of bugs out of computers in my day.” Ed said, somewhat intentionally to show up the guy that Ed just knew was the kind of jock in high school who used to pick on him for his nerdy love for computers yet was now trying to break into the industry; as he and Darla walked off Ed just casually looked around and did his best not to look at Darla yet also tried to make it not look obvious, “This place is pretty amazing.”

“I’m glad ya like it for the price I hired ya for. That was one hell of a biddin’ war for ya. Your experience is quite desirable.” Darla said as she smiled over at Ed and got Ed to both look at her and chuckle but he quickly looked away as his shyness overpowered him.

“Make. Eye. Contact!” Ed yelled at himself in his head yet he just kept looking forward while following Darla, “So what’s the problem with your computer Mrs. O’Grady?”

“Oh, it’s miss O’Grady.” Darla said as she looked over at Ed with a seductive look but Ed figured he was reading too much into it and just nodded as if he was oblivious to her possible flirt, not wanting to think she was flirting and be wrong, “And you can call me Darla. Everyone’s on a first name basis here, yet we don’t forget that there is a hierarchy. I just think it brings us all closer as a whole if we call each other by our first names. The hierarchy seems to be built on mutual respect that way rather than fear. As for my computer, it’s been acting weird. I go to open a program and it’ll open several others and before I know it my screen’s full of programs yet when I try to close out of them they restart.”

“Sounds like a bug for sure, maybe some malware.” Ed replied, unaware that Darla was flirting with him, or the fact that she found his American accent to be sexy yet nowhere near as sexy as his nerdiness.

“I’m glad you’re so experienced.” Darla said as they walked into her office and felt an immediate wave of cool air from Darla’s AC unit before she turned quickly, intentionally swiping her breasts along Ed’s shoulder as she turned to her coat rack.
