"What's he doing here", Lylah repeated.

Raj simply threw a smirk at the young lady. He enjoyed getting a reaction out of her every single time.

"Lylah, please join us", Mark pointed to the empty seat next to Raj.

Lylah reluctantly walked to her seat, then finally sat down, trying her best not to offer Raj even a glance.

She didn't want to see his stupid smirk again.

"I have an urgent assignment for you both", Mark cut to the chase.

Lylah's eyes narrowed as she sat down next to Raj in Mark's office. She couldn't believe she was being forced to work with her ex again.

Mark smiled, not quite oblivious to the tension between them, but he making money off his capable employees was more important.

"So, I'm sure you're both aware of the upcoming conference for publishers. We've been invited to attend, and I think it's a great opportunity for us to network and learn more about the industry."

Lylah's gut tightened as Mark dropped the bombshell.

"I've decided that Lylah will be attending as our editor, and you Raj, will be joining her as our graphic designer."

Raj's smirk made Lylah's skin crawl. She knew he was enjoying her discomfort.

"Errrm, excuse me Mark but I think Francheska or Luna would be a better fit for the job", Lylah politely declined.

Mark's expression turned quizzical.

"Oh? Why's that, Lylah? You're our top editor, and I think you'd be perfect for this conference."

Lylah hesitated, trying to come up with a diplomatic explanation.

"Well, Mark, I think Francheska or Luna would be a better fit for this conference. They're both familiar with the publishing industry, and they'd be great representatives for our company."

Mark leaned back in his chair, steepling his fingers together.

"That's outrageously ridiculous young lady", Mark shook his head.

"You Lylah, you are Prose and Co's star editor, you've handled so many projects effortlessly. You can withstand pressure. Do I honestly need to spell out how great you are at your job?"

"But Mark, I think the others should be given a chance to prove themselves too, I can't always take every-

"Oh yeah, like Luna and Francheska?", Raj chimed in smoothly.

Lylah paused.

"As a matter of fact yes", her tone was sharp.

"Miss Jeurgens, this program isn't a talent scouting program but rather it is to enhance your editorial skills. I can't have my star editor lacking. This isn't up for discussion. You're on", Mark barked.

Lylah's heart sank. She had been hoping to avoid spending a week with Raj, but it seemed like that wasn't going to be possible.

"I...I suppose you're right, Mark," she said reluctantly.

Mark nodded, a smile spreading across his face.

"Great! I'll make sure to have Kim book your flights and accommodations. You and Raj will be representing our company at the conference, and I expect you both to make a great impression."

Lylah felt a surge of anxiety. A week with Raj? She wasn't even sure if she could handle it.

"How long is the conference again, Mark?" she asked, trying to stall.

Mark checked his notes.

"It's a week-long conference, starting on Monday. You and Raj will need to arrive on Sunday to check in and get settled."

Lylah nodded, trying to process the information. A week with Raj, stuck in the same hotel, attending the same conference. She wasn't sure if she was ready for this.

"Well that would be all", Mark clasped his hands together.

Lylah nodded in understanding then rose.

"And oh Lylah, after this conference, you can have your leave"

Lylah replied with a tight smile before stepping out of Mark's office, Raj following closely behind.

Lylah reached her cubicle and sat comfortably in her seat.

She was ready to clear the few manuscripts she had to edit before this unplanned trip.

She looked at the ceiling, lost in her own thoughts.

"I guess I'm picking you up at 1 in the afternoon on Sunday then", she heard him say.

"No need, I can find my way to the airport", Lylah nonchalantly typed on her keyboard, avoiding Raj's gaze.

She could feel his gaze on her. But who cared, she obviously didn't.

Sunday swept by in a blur. And Lylah was just too edgy for her own good. She took one last look at herself in the mirror, before finally dragging her luggage with her.

Before, this would have been a dream come true, but right now, she wasn't even attracted to the man anymore.

"Where are you off to?"

Luna stood in the living room, stuffing her face with cookies and a bowl of ice cream.

"Hi Luna"

Lylah whispered sheepishly.

"Don't hi me", Luna rolled her eyes.

Lylah left her luggage by the dining table and approached Luna.

"Adwoa, come on. I decided to give you a call when I'm already there. I didn't know how to tell you", Lylah tried explaining.

Luna squinted her eyes a bit, then shook her head. She was a bit confused.

What was so hard for Lylah to say that she'd rather speak of it over the phone.

"Oh my Goddddddddddddddd!", Luna jumped, abandoning her snack, focusing solely on Lylah.

Lylah looked on clearly amused. But knowing Luna, whatever she was about to say wasn't something too good.

"I can't believe you finally listened to me. I've been telling you to get laid for months and now your clothes it's packed. I knew it oh Jesus", Luna rapped.

Lylah folded her arms.

"Do you still have a good gag reflex though, because girl, you have to choke on some di-

"Luna!"

"I'm not going to screw some weirdo and definitely not Raj", Lylah cut in.

The things Luna said sometimes.

"What?"

"Raj?", Luna popped an eyebrow up.

Lylah sighed.

"There's a publisher's conference happening in Kumasi, and myself and Raj are to represent PROSE AND CO. And it's a whole week", Lylah revealed.

"I even tried to push the opportunity to you but Mark wouldn't have it", She whispered the latter.

"Ly, we both know you're the best PROSE AND CO ever had. Don't let Raj ruin anything for you. Go out there and shine", Luna giggled.

"Who cares, just go and be you"

Lylah hugged Luna as silent sobs wrecked her body.

"Why are you crying idiot?", Luna questioned.

Lylah laughed.

"I'm not, I think my pussy leaking into my eyes", Lylah replied.

They both bursted into laughter as they broke up the hug.

"C'mon, let's go, you need a ride to the airport", Luna grabbed Lylah's luggage.

A look at Luna and Lylah smiled. There was no one like her.

She too was family.

Her sister.

"Where were you?, you are almost late", Faye pointed out the obvious. "I'm here now, ain't I?", Lylah sighed as she took off her dark glasses.Lylah's eyes were bloodshot and heavy, the whites tinged with red, a telltale sign of a late night and too little sleep. Dark circles etched beneath her eyes like shadows. The skin underneath was puffy and dark. The spark that usually lit up her face had dimmed, leaving her gaze dull and lacklustre, giving her eyes a perpetually sleepy look."Ooh, what happened to you?, you look a hot mess. I leave you for a while and I can't find you anywhere. Oh right I found you close to twelve hours later, which is like now", Faye dropped the bomb on Lylah."Why are you making a mountain out of a molehill?, not like I didn't call you severally before?", Lylah rolled her eyes.Faye scanned her friend up and down, she almost looked like she got no sleep at all. This was no way to look presentable for a presentation.Well definitely not the type of upper eche

"You look so bomb, the smokey eye is definitely your style", Faye encouraged. Lylah smiled, admiring her reflection in the mirror. She was pretty, pretty enough and she didn't need one man to make her feel like she wasn't.Not just make her feel, to tell her that she wasn't pretty."Earth to Lylah", Faye snapped her fingers in Lylah's face.Lylah blinked twice, her eyes following the direction of Faye's fingers. She raised her left eyebrow quizzically. "I said we're done here. Where have your mind been?", Faye questioned. "Sorry, I just be doing that a lot sinc-"Stop", Faye interrupted. "Just stop Lylah. Your every single conversation leads back to him, that one. Why do you keep on inflicting on yourself so much pain", she added. Lylah rose up and settled on the bed. She looked up, like those ceilings were the most fancy thing she ever saw.She embraced herself, cause after all all she had was herself. She wanted to cry but she didn't want to do it before Faye. Lylah's world was crumbling and she felt like she was on the verge of a breakdown, the great pillar of her life was tumbling down on her and she was struggling to cope. What happened to her?, to them?, she was still in denial, trying to escape the reality of the situation.Lylah felt suffocated in her own skin. But the water was alive, its soft caress wrapping around her ankles like a lover's touch. Lylah sighed, letting her head fall back against the tub. The jets massaged her scalp, a gentle pulse that seemed to sync with her heartbeat. She felt weightless, suspended in a world of warmth and comfort. The bubbles tickled, a playful laugh that echoed through the bathroom. "Glub glub glub," they whispered, a soothing lullaby.Seeking solace, her eyes drifted shut, she sucked in her breath a submerged herself in the tub, letting herself sink deeper, into the peacefulness of it all as the water enveloped her.The bubbles tickled her skin, a strange comfort. It felt peaceful down there

"Are you okay?", he asked. Lylah's eyes looked empty; it was like every single blood had been drained from her face. The moisture in her lips was gone and it had been replaced with a rather dry lip. Her chest felt heavy. "Why do I let this happen to me over, and over, and over again", she mumbled. Her eyes landed on the smug looking guy standing right next to her. Marshmallow friend. "Why is he still here?", Lylah thought. She popped a questionable brow his way. "Randoff at your service ma'am", he replied. Lylah rolled her eyes, she wasn't even asking for his name. He seemed to be following her around and it was starting to feel awkward. She didn't want his attention. The irony wasn't lost on her, the one person she wanted was nowhere to be found. Life had a way of rubbing it in her face, didn't it? "Hey, you don't look too good, are you even supposed to be here at all", Randoff questioned. "Stop it", Lylah seethed. " I don't know you, I don't want your care, why are yo

  • HURT IN A YEAR    Bad Day

Lylah frantically rummaged through her closet, the ticking clock seemed to mock her, each passing second a harsh reminder that she was running perilously late for the most important conference of her career. The air was thick with the scent of her sweat, even after washing down for the second time that day, and it was just a few minutes past 12 in the afternoon. Her fingers flew through the rows of clothes, rejecting each outfit with a dismissive swish of her hand. Where was that one dress, the one that made her feel invincible? She didn't want to struggle with her choice of clothes and that was why she unpacked her clothes from the suitcase into the wardrobe. She snatched a glance at the clock on her nightstand, and her heart sank. Thirty minutes. She was thirty minutes late, she had less than 5 minutes to transform herself from a chaotic mess into a poised professional. The sound of her own ragged breathing was the only soundtrack as she seized the cream-colored pencil skirt

Lylah Jeurgens walked down the hallway, her heels clicking softly against the plush carpet. She had stayed at this hotel before. The layout was familiar and comforting. As she approached her room, she slipped her key card into the slot and pushed open the door. The familiar scent of fresh linens and the soft glow of the lamps welcomed her back into her sanctuary. Lylah smiled, feeling a sense of comfort and relaxation wash over her. A small smile tugged at her lips. But that serenity was short-lived. The familiar scent of mint and wood hit her like a ghost of the past. She didn't even need to look to know he was there. He sat at the mini-bar, a glass in his hand, the liquid swirling as he twirled the glass. "So, where did you vanish to after your little moment with Mr. Replacement?", Raj muttered before draining his glass. Lylah just picked up the tv remote from the cobalt carpet, her gaze caught on his familiar blue baseball cap. She bent down to pick it up, but then she pau
