Chapter 4 The Offer

last update publish date: 2026-10-15 17:03:56

Boney stood alone in the empty ballroom long after the ambulance lights had faded from the windows. Chairs lay overturned. Someone's abandoned phone still blinked on a table, forgotten in the rush. The silence hit him differently now than it had an hour ago, when he'd imagined this moment as something closer to victory.

He hadn't expected the blood or the way she'd looked at him right before her knees gave out, like some part of her was still waiting for him to say it was a mistake.

A door suddenly opened behind him.

"You look like a man who just lost, not won." His uncle's voice was calm, almost amused, as he stepped further into the room, hands folded behind his back.

Boney didn't turn around. "She was pregnant."

His uncle nodded. "So I heard."

"You don't sound surprised." Boney turned and held his uncle's gaze.

"I'm not." His uncle came to stand beside him, studying the wreckage of chairs and spilled wine glasses like it was art. "Does it matter?"

Boney's jaw tightened. "She lost the baby tonight. Because of...me."

"And?"

Boney was silent for few seconds.

"I felt something when I saw her on that floor." His voice was quieter now, almost like a confession he hadn't meant to make out loud. "I don't know what to call it."

His uncle turned to face him fully. "Pity, perhaps."

"Maybe."

"For her? Or for the child you never wanted, from a woman whose family destroyed everything you were supposed to inherit?"

Boney said nothing.

"Do you remember your father's face?" his uncle asked, softer now, almost gentle, which was somehow worse than if he'd shouted it. "The last time I saw him, before the illness took him completely in prison, he asked me one question. Do you know what it was?"

Boney's hands curled at his sides. He knew what was coming. He always did, and it never stopped working.

"He asked if anyone would ever pay for what they took from him." His uncle let that settle before continuing. "Not money. Not the company. His name, Boney. They buried his name in filth and let him die believing the world thought he was a criminal."

Boney blinked repeatedly. "I know."

"Do you?" His uncle's voice sharpened, just slightly. "Because tonight, for one moment, you looked like you'd forgotten."

The pity Boney had felt disappeared. His chest went cold again, and the familiar cruelty returned.

"I haven't forgotten anything," he said with an empty eyes.

"Good." His uncle patted his shoulder once. "Because pity is a luxury men like us cannot afford. Least of all for the daughter of the people who put him in that grave."

Boney's expression hardened, the brief crack sealing itself shut as quickly as it had opened.

"They will rot in that jail cell," he said. "Both of them. And I promise you, whatever mercy I felt tonight was the last mercy any of them will ever get from me. Especially her."

"Her most of all?" His uncle asked with a smirk, eyebrow raised.

"Her most of all," Boney repeated. "I'll make sure her life is unlivable. She won't have a single place left to hide."

His uncle smiled, satisfied, and straightened Boney's collar like a proud father fixing a son's tie before an important meeting.

"Now that's the man I raised," he said. "So. What's next? A phone call to remind the judge whose evidence he's holding? Or something more... immediate?"

---

Outside the police station, the night air was cold enough that Caramel could see her own breath.

"You look worse than the last time we met."

Her body stiffened.

She turned and saw him. The same man from her wedding night.

"You again?" she said, eyes widening.

He stepped closer, stopping at a distance. "I warned you."

Her eyes hardened. "You don't get to talk to me."

"I think I do now." He smirked. Plus, something in his tone made her pause.

Caramel blinked. "You said he wasn't a good man," she said slowly.

He didn't deny it.

"Now you see it."

Her jaw tightened. "How much do you know?"

He smiled faintly, and played with his fingers. "Quite a lot."

Silence stretched between them, both looking at each other.

"You can stand here and let him destroy everything you have left," he said calmly, "or you can do something about it."

She stared at him, her emotions raw. "And why would I trust you?"

He smirked. "You don't have to trust me."

He held her gaze. "You just have to want him to pay."

Her breath caught.

"Are you ready to take my offer now?"

She said nothing. Everything in her wanted to walk away, to tell him she didn't need anyone, least of all a stranger who'd shown up twice now like he'd been waiting for her to break completely. But some other part of her was tired of not knowing anything.

He watched her hesitate, and something shifted in his expression, like he'd expected exactly this.

"Before you answer," he said, "follow me. Let me show you something."

Caramel's stomach turned. "Show me what?"

"Something you need to see. Not hear about. But see."

"I don't even know your name."

"You don't need it yet."

She almost laughed, except nothing about this felt remotely funny. "You expect me to just follow a stranger somewhere at night, after everything that's happened tonight?"

"I expect you to make a choice," he said. "Come with me and find out what I know. Or walk away and keep believing whatever's easiest."

Her hands curled at her sides.

Every instinct told her this could be exactly the kind of trap her mother would warn her about — a man who knew too much, appearing at the worst possible moments, offering answers that came at a price she couldn't see yet.

But another part of her, colder now than it had been that morning, whispered that she had nothing left for anyone to take.

She looked at him for a long moment, searching his face for something, anything, that would tell her whether this was rescue or ruin.

He didn't move or press her. He just waited, like he already knew this wasn't a decision she could rush.

"Well?" he said quietly.

Caramel's heart pounded. She didn't know if she was about to make the smartest decision of her life, or the most dangerous one.

The door of Room 1108 stayed closed, but Caramel could not stop staring at it. She just made a deal with a stranger and her heart was pounding hard. “I need to know something,” she said, turning to the man beside her. “What is your name?"“Messi.”“Messi who?”“For now, it's just Messi,” he started walking towards the elevator. “Names are easy to find but trust is not and I need you to trust me.”Caramel followed him. “So, why do you hate Boney?”“Let's just say he took something from me too.”“That’s not an answer.”“Well, maybe not. But that is all you should know for now.”The elevator opened and she stepped in beside him, her eyes caught a reflection of herself in the mirror wall; her hair was messy, eyes red and swollen. She was still wearing the birthday dress with a dark stain near the hem. She looked away fast. Her phone buzzed inside her hand bag: she had forgotten it was even there, she took it out and frowned looking at the screen. [Your account access has been suspended

Caramel stood there long enough that he almost turned to leave. Then she took a step forward. "Fine." She looked at him and held his gaze. "I'll go with you. But..." She paused and Messi eyebrow lifted."If this is a trap," she continued quietly, "you'll regret it. I promise."He smirked then his face turned cold at once. "Noted." He turned and walked toward the street while Caramel followed. The car was parked beneath a streetlight. She hesitated before getting in, then forced herself into the passenger seat.Neither of them spoke during the drive. Caramel sat with her arms folded across herself, staring out of the window. She was exhausted. Her body still felt weak from the hospital, and her head was full of things she couldn't make sense of.The car eventually slowed in front of a large hotel. Caramel looked through the windshield. She had never been here before. She turned to look at Messi "Why are we here?"Messi turned off the engine. Then he looked at her for a moment through

The first thing she saw was white. For a few seconds she only stared, her breathing uneven and her mind struggling to catch up with her body. Everything felt heavy, like she'd been dragged out of somewhere deep and dropped another place, she didn't recognize. Then everything came rushing back, at once. The stage. The crowd. His voice against her ear. Her chest tightened, and her hand moved instinctively to her stomach. The chair beside her bed was empty. She was alone. The door opened and a nurse stepped in, followed by a doctor."What... happened?" Caramel's voice came out dry."You were brought in after collapsing," the doctor said. "And I must say, you lost a lot of blood."Her fingers curled against the sheet. "And... my baby?"The silence lasted only a second, but it was enough. "I'm sorry. We lost the baby."Everything in her stilled. Her hands pressed harder against her stomach, like she could hold onto something already gone. Tears slipped down her face, silenty. Afterwards, t

Boney straightened and watched Caramel's face carefully waiting for a crack. Caramel didn't move at first. Her head was lowered and her hands was trembling badly. Gradually, she lifted her head and looked at him.The man in front of her didn't look like the person she fell in love with. He looked like a total stranger. Before she could speak, Boney gave someone a small signal and a screen lit up behind her.She didn't turn immediately. But the room wasn't the same anymore. Chairs scraped and her parents looked up sharply, their faces filled with shock as they stared past her. Slowly, she turned and saw it.Apparently , everything she'd just read was projected for the whole room to see. Her breath caught and the paper slipped from her fingers to the floor. "No..." she whispered.Murmurs rose around her."What is that?""Divorce on her birthday?"She turned back to him, eyes heavy with tears. "Is this some kind of sick joke?" Her voice shook. "What's going on?"He didn't answer. Cameras

The night Caramel's husband decided to destroy her started like a celebration."Please, let's welcome on stage with me...my beautiful wife, Caramel!" Boney called out with a smile as he looked in the direction of his wife. When he called her name, applause had instantly erupted in the room. Caramel froze for a second, then she glanced around as if to confirm she hadn't misheard. And yes- Everyone was already on their feet, looking at her while still clapping. Even her parents were there. Her chest warmed up. She felt shy but smiled anyway because she was genuinely happy tonight. Just hours ago , she had thought her husband forgot her birthday. The tension that has been in their marriage lately made it easy for her to believe that. But then he surprised her. She stood, smoothed her dress and walked towards the stage, still smiling. Her hand brushed lightly over her stomach instinctively. Her husband didn't know yet. She had planned to tell him tonight. Not right now but when they we
