ZAYDEN

Cold sweat broke out on my skin as I waited, each second dragging out longer than the last.

“Relax. Even if it's broken, I can still fix it up. You will only need to stay in bed longer than you should have.”

If his words had been intended to be reassuring, it failed woefully. If anything it made me more anxious, laying out everything I could lose and prying apart all that was at stake.

Time was the most expensive luxury to me at the moment. I didn't have any to waste in bed.

  • Hate to love you: The star's forbidden obsession   Only disgust

RONANBy the time I reached the headquarters, my heart was already boiling with suppressed anger.I wasn't exactly close to Bryan, so why would he suddenly summon me?Instead of taking the main entrance, I directed my Aston Martin into the underground parking lot.I parked in the president’s designated spot. Not that I'm the president, though. The area was unnaturally quiet, almost deserted. Yet countless cameras were positioned strategically along the walls and ceilings, their lenses quietly tracking every movement. At the first sign of danger, emergency countermeasures would be activated immediately.I made my way to the private elevator reserved for the chairman.Facial recognition scanned my features before the doors slid open. I stepped inside and pressed the button for the executive floor. The elevator seemed incredibly slow today. This fucking company was the last place I wanted to be.Every time I came here, the same suffocating disgust rose from somewhere deep in my belly, cr

  • Hate to love you: The star's forbidden obsession   Strange family dynamics

OMNISCIENT POV[This POV is used when the chapter requires immersion and the two main characters are not involved. However, omniscient POV will only occur in limited chapters throughout the story.]Devereaux Holdings, HeadquartersBryan Devereaux sat behind his desk, brows furrowed as he went through a report. The soft rap against the door drew his attention from the document. He lifted his head. “Enter.”The door opened, and his assistant, a male beta in his late twenties, stepped inside with a tablet in hand. “We have a little problem, sir.”Bryan's eyes narrowed slightly. “With the production line?”The assistant hesitated. It was barely noticeable, but Bryan caught it immediately. The young man's fingers flexed around the tablet, and a faint awkwardness settled across his features before he finally looked at his employer.“No, the date you asked me to arrange…” His pitch was low, as if the very thing he needed to say was extremely embarrassing. “... might have a problem.”Bryan dr

  • Hate to love you: The star's forbidden obsession   Making an exit plan

ZAYDENThe thought felt somewhat terrifying, especially considering everything I'd been through to succeed in my chosen career.I shifted my bathrobe aside and examined my left arm. Outwardly, nothing seemed to have changed. There was no obvious swelling or deformity, but the few times Slade's hand had come down on it left me doubtful. What Leslie had said about it was still vivid in my mind.'Avoid every impact for at least six months, otherwise it would require major surgery to correct.'I had carefully avoided every impact while I was outside. Only to come home and collide with an unexpected problem.Although it didn't feel like it had broken again, one couldn't be too sure without an X-ray.And, honestly, I was scared of an X-ray.What if it confirmed my fear? What if that hit had just now affected a nerve? Wouldn't it be game over for not just hockey, but programming too? Both my careers required extensive use of my fingers and hands. But hockey was significantly more demanding o

  • Hate to love you: The star's forbidden obsession   Maybe, it's time to let go

ZAYDENMy door shut with a quiet click, and I slowly made my way to the bathroom. My entire body ached terribly, and I could barely see straight. My head felt woozy and heavy, as though someone had stuffed it with cotton. The strange hotness behind my eyes made me wonder if something was seriously wrong with my body.I stopped before my bathroom cabinet. There were sachets of special herbs Doctor Leslie had given to me.I hadn't noticed them until I opened my bag to unpack, only to realise he had placed not just the herbal massage oil inside, but also free calming incense sticks and dried herbs. The ones suitable for external use were placed in my bathroom cabinet, alongside Leslie's handwritten note.I picked up the note and checked it again. It was stuck to one of the packets."You have trouble sleeping, so you should often use the one in the blue pack to bathe and also light that incense. It will help you sleep. Don't worry, the incense has no smoke."My gaze moved to the next para

  • Hate to love you: The star's forbidden obsession   You were the reason I failed

ZAYDENMy head was getting woozy, and his voice became a distant sound echoing somewhere at the edge of my consciousness. The room seemed to tilt beneath me.Suddenly, Leslie's face flashed before my eyes. ‘Don't you dare waste my hard work. You mustn't let this arm get damaged again.’My eyes drifted open. The pain returned with brutal clarity.I scooted backwards until my back hit the wall, instinctively hiding my left arm where his punches wouldn't affect it. My breathing came in shallow, uneven bursts, every movement sending another pulse of pain through my battered body.“You son of a bitch!” His voice echoed all around me, full of anger and hatred. He suddenly grabbed the glass vase near the TV stand and hurled it at me.I barely raised my right hand to shield my head in time. The vase collided with my elbow with a jarring clang before exploding into countless glittering fragments.A sharp cry escaped my lips.Tiny pieces of glass scattered across the floor and lodged against my

  • Hate to love you: The star's forbidden obsession   Sure, I will die

ZAYDENI didn't know how I got home. My feet merely kept moving, carrying me forward even when my mind seemed to have completely abandoned them. The sounds of drivers yelling at me to get out of the way and the relentless honking of car horns followed me all the way home. But they sounded muffled inside my head, distant and distorted, like voices echoing from the bottom of a tunnel. I knew people were shouting. I knew cars were passing dangerously close to me.I simply couldn't bring myself to care. The next time I looked up, I was standing in front of our house. The familiar two-storey grey building loomed before me, somehow appearing even colder than it had that morning. The windows stared down at me like dark, unblinking eyes, and for a moment, I couldn't bring myself to take another step.My heart felt impossibly heavy.Breathing had become a difficult task, every breath scraping through my lungs like shards of broken glass. I dragged air into my chest anyway, but it never seemed

ZAYDENMy jaw locked. The room turned stifling, air too thick to breathe, my heart hammering against my ribs like it wanted out. My thoughts frayed at the edges, vision swimming at the corners. Ronan’s eyes gleamed, vicious satisfaction naked in them. His hand slid up my spine, slow and deliberate

  • Hate to love you: The star's forbidden obsession   A recipe for disaster

ZAYDENOne hour at the gym, and another ten minutes at the school sports facility did nothing to loosen the knots in both my shoulder muscles and chest. It felt like something heavy was crushing me from the inside. It didn’t matter. I had to shove it down and enter the rink. Today was the internal

  • Hate to love you: The star's forbidden obsession   The cost of losing

ZAYDENMy hands gripped the report sheet so hard my knuckles turned white, eyes fixed on the leaderboard. Blood in my mouth from biting my tongue too hard. Ronan Devereaux. Number one in Managerial Accounting, two points higher than mine. Statistics, one point higher. One fucking point. General

  • Hate to love you: The star's forbidden obsession   The one I hate the most

Zayden MercerThe scent hits my nose the moment I step into the villa. The luxury holiday cottage which the school had prepared for our hockey teams as we competed with Worcester’s Polar Titans. I marched into the house. There in the central living room, Ronan Devereux was sprawled on a sofa, trou
