Chapter 4

작가: AgustD
On the day we were leaving, the butler brought three offer letters from the firm.

Lily, Ethan, and Julian tore theirs open right away.

All three were offer letters from the firm's New York office.

Lily threw herself into Julian's arms, thrilled.

"I can't believe it, Julian! I actually got into the New York office! Now all three of us can work together!"

Then, as if she'd only just remembered I was there, she scrambled out of his arms.

"I'm sorry, Evelyn. I got carried away. Please don't blame Julian. I'm the one who begged him to stay in New York because of my health."

Julian seemed uneasy, probably because I'd been so cold the past couple of days.

He stepped past Lily and pushed a box from a duty-free shop into my hands.

"Evelyn, I got you a little something."

He spoke in a patronizing tone, as though I should be grateful.

"London isn't the place for you. The British aren't exactly welcoming to outsiders, and you're too stubborn for your own good. You'd have a hard time there.

"Stay in New York. I pulled some strings and got you an administrative position at the New York office. The pay isn't great, but I can support you for the rest of your life."

I looked down at the wallet in my hands. It looked cheaper than something a company would hand out for free.

It was some cheap thing he'd grabbed on his way through the airport.

Lily, meanwhile, had a bracelet he'd bought at auction the night before for $300,000.

Smirking, I tossed the wallet into the trash right in front of the three of them.

Julian's smile froze on his face.

"Evelyn, what's that supposed to mean?"

"Nothing. I'm just putting trash where it belongs."

Julian went pale with anger.

"Quit acting like a spoiled child, Evelyn! I owe one of the partners a huge favor for getting you that job!"

Just then, my parents walked in, loaded down with shopping bags and in a great mood.

My mother pressed two sets of brand-new car keys into Ethan's and Lily's hands.

"Ethan, this is the newest Porsche. Lily, this custom pink one is for you to drive to work.

"We can't let the Howard family look bad!"

Then she dug an old key out of the bottom of her purse and tossed it to me.

"Evelyn, this used to be the housekeeper's car. We've had it serviced and cleaned up. Since you'll be working an office job in New York, you don't need anything fancy. Don't expect a brand-new car like Ethan and Lily."

Everyone was busy fussing over Lily and tossing me their scraps.

That was when my phone rang.

It was Edward, calling from the London headquarters.

I put it on speaker.

"Evelyn, the firm's management committee has unanimously approved your appointment as a senior associate at our London headquarters. We've also arranged an apartment for you."

The smug smile slid off Lily's face.

Ethan stared, wide-eyed, unable to believe it.

Julian went white and blurted, "That's impossible. I already withdrew..."

Unfortunately for him, Edward heard every word.

"Withdrew her application, Mr. Walker?" Edward's voice turned cold. "You accessed her email without permission and sent a fraudulent withdrawal in her name.

"Both our London headquarters and New York office have revoked their offers to Lily. We've also filed a formal complaint against you with the appropriate attorney disciplinary authority in New York."

"Thank you, Mr. Thorne." I hung up.

The keys slipped out of Lily's hand and hit the floor. She sank onto the couch like her legs had given out.

Julian reached for me.

"Evelyn, let me explain. I just wanted to keep you close..."

I stepped back out of his reach, yanked off my engagement ring, and threw it in the trash with the wallet.

"Mr. Walker, spare me the savior act.

"Since you're so eager to take care of Lily, she can have you. She can have everything that comes with being a Howard, too. I don't want any of it.

"And that old car? Give it to someone who actually needs it."

I picked up the suitcase I'd packed days ago.

Without another glance at my parents, Ethan, or Julian, I walked straight to the waiting car.

"Enjoy your lives in New York."

The work wrapped up on my last day in town. While I was there, I also had to finalize the paperwork to remove my name from a family asset registered under my name years ago.So I offered to come home for dinner. My parents were thrilled when they heard.Days ahead of time, they had Ethan text me to ask what I wanted to eat.I glanced at Edward, my fiancé, who was sitting beside me, and named a few of his favorite dishes off the top of my head.On the day of the dinner, Edward and I walked in together. But the moment we did, everyone in the room looked stricken.Sitting on the other side of the table was Julian, whom I hadn't seen in years. He looked even more haggard than he had back on that London street. He saw me walk in with my fingers laced through Edward's.The glass of water slipped out of his hand and hit the floor. He sat frozen in his chair. It turned out my parents were afraid I'd stay in England for good. They wanted me back together with Julian, who was no longer engaged t

But none of that had anything to do with me anymore. As my career took off, my life only got busier.I kept winning major cases and made partner.Every Christmas, I had my secretary mail a plain card to my parents' house.Other than that, I never went back to New York. I never even called. That changed on Christmas Eve, three years after I'd moved to London. My parents got through to me on the firm's main line and insisted on a video call. When it connected, I was at my desk reviewing files. My parents looked older on the screen. My mother studied my cold expression. She sounded hurt, like she was testing the waters."It's been three years and you haven't called once. Are you still angry about how we treated you?"I looked up at the screen, surprised."So you do know you treated me badly?"My calm response left them struggling to keep up appearances. My mother's eyes went red, and she got worked up."Yes, we favored Lily. But we scolded her for what she did! Are you seriously going to

Life in London moved fast.In my first year, I worked under Edward, and we won three high-profile international cases back to back. That earned me the right to lead my own team.Edward was four years older than me.He came from a long line of British judges and barristers, and at work, he gave me nothing but respect and support. We worked well together, and after hours we'd often talk through our cases over dinner.Little by little, things between us grew warmer.Once I got to London, I cut off every personal tie I had in New York. That lasted until early winter, a year after I started. My firm was advising on a cross-border merger involving British and American companies. The American delegation arrived in England.I was in charge of greeting them, and to my surprise, I spotted Julian at the very back of the group. He looked thin and worn out.His suspension had ended that year, but his name was mud. Nobody would give him any real cases. He'd landed a minor spot on the advisory team t

"You idiot! Now everyone's saying we teamed up to lie to the public, and three more partners want out!"Out in the hallway, Gregory was screaming at Julian. My father looked at Lily on the floor, then at the reporters outside. He knew the Howard family's reputation was in tatters."The internet already knows about the wedding plans. The only way to limit the damage is for you two to announce your engagement now!""What?" Julian cried. "I'm not marrying her! I'm marrying Evelyn!""You don't get a say!"Gregory slapped him hard across the face."If you don't get engaged and back up the story, you'll ruin your career and drag the entire family down with you!"Lily kept her head down, but she couldn't quite hide the gleam of triumph in her eyes.I put on my coat and walked past all of them."Congratulations. Now it's official."The next day, Julian and Lily's engagement was all over the headlines.Lily clung happily to Julian's arm.Julian stood beside her like a puppet, letting his father

"Ethan, she's your own sister!"I told you to look after Lily. I never taught you to make your own sister take the blame for someone else!"Ethan scrambled to explain."That's not what I meant. I just think family should help each other out...""By sacrificing Evelyn's future?"I watched in cold silence as the four of them turned on each other. My parents glanced over and caught the cold look in my eyes. They stopped short.I didn't argue or try to defend myself. I barely reacted at all.And it finally hit them. There was a reason I was this calm.Over the last seven years, this same scene had played out at home more times than I could count.Every time Lily messed up and played the victim, Ethan would jump to her defense. And somehow, I always ended up paying the price. They looked at Ethan, defending Lily no matter what she'd done. Then they looked at me, numb to it all.And for the first time, my parents felt something like guilt. My mother reached for my hand."Evelyn, we were wron

Edward knew what I'd been through. He'd booked me a hotel so I could rest.I'd also be attending a client reception the London headquarters was hosting in New York. After that, I'd fly straight to London and start my new job.In a room with no fighting and no favorites, I slept soundly. The next morning, the doorbell rang.I opened the door.My parents, Ethan, and Lily were standing outside.I made no move to invite them in.My father frowned and pushed his way in anyway."Evelyn, you threw a tantrum, checked into a hotel, and didn't even bother telling us? What kind of behavior is that?"He still talked down to me, like always.I didn't take the bait."If you want something, just say it."Seeing that I wasn't backing down, my mother tugged at my father's arm and forced a smile. She pulled out a property transfer agreement and a check for $2 million."Evelyn, this is from your dad and me. A gift for your new job."I glanced at the papers.Tucked beneath the property transfer agreement
