Chapter 81

The air in the hall was heavy, thick with fear, and even though the terrorists tried to appear confident, I could see the unease in their eyes. They didn’t expect the police to connect to the giant screen earlier, and now, even without direct communication, I knew the police would not sit idle. They would act.

I already saw the red light blinking in the cctv and I knew that the police were on the rescue plan. The terrorists had earlier turned off all the cctv but it seems like they do not know how determined our state’s police is. Our technology is upgraded to the highest level so connecting to the cctv would be a piece of cake for them.

At first, everything was still and tense with silence as the terrorists muttered in low voices, clutching their weapons tighter, while the hostages held their breath. My hands trembled in my lap, not only from fear but from the anticipation of what might come next. My thoughts went briefly to Nathan wherever he was, if he was even alive. Th

  • THE WOMAN THEY COULDN’T BREAK   Chapter 100

Chapter 100The restaurant Lucian took us to was warm, golden-lit, filled with the hum of quiet conversations and clinking glasses. The scent of grilled steak and fresh bread drifted through the air, making my stomach grumble despite the knot of nerves still twisting there. We sat in a booth by the window, and for the first time in days, I felt almost… normal. The waiter brought our meals, plates of sizzling steak, creamy pasta, and baskets of warm rolls. Conversation flowed, surprisingly easy. We laughed at Ava’s dramatic retelling of how she had barged into the police parking lot like a “guardian angel with perfect hair.”For a moment, I allowed myself to sink into it. To smile. To eat. To feel human again. But halfway through, Ava’s phone rang. Her laughter stilled. She glanced at the screen, and all the colour drained from her face.“Excuse me.” She stepped aside to answer, her voice low.Lucian and I exchanged worried glances.Moments later, Ava returned, her expression stricken.

  • THE WOMAN THEY COULDN’T BREAK   Chapter 99

Chapter 99Jasper’s laughter broke through the air, cruel and echoing. “Ohhh, Lucian,” he sneered, his voice carrying across the stone like a curse, “you have no idea who you’re messing with. If I could kidnap my stepbrother, then you….” he pointed a finger toward Lucian, his face twisted….“you’re just an ant to me. Watch your back.”His eyes flicked to me, glinting with obsession. “And you, Elena… don’t think for a second that you’re free from me. You were mine first. My mistake was letting you walk away, but I’ll compensate for that. When I get you back, you won’t leave again. You’ll be mine… my slave.”The word dripped with venom.“You think national recognition makes you untouchable?” Jasper sneered. “You don’t even know what’s coming.” His laugh rang out again, unhinged, before he finally turned and stalked away.I couldn’t breathe until his silhouette disappeared from view. I couldn’t hear the things he was saying but I knew he was cursing us.“Don’t let him get to you,” Lucian

  • THE WOMAN THEY COULDN’T BREAK   Chapter 98

Chapter 98I never thought the air outside a police station could feel so heavy, like a storm waiting to break. The doors slammed shut behind us as Lucian’s hand tightened protectively around mine. My wrists still ached from the cuffs they had only just removed, the skin red and raw, but it wasn’t the physical pain that stung the most, it was the shame of being paraded like a criminal.Lucian, tall and sharp as always, exuded a calm authority I didn’t realise I desperately needed. His presence was the only thing keeping me from collapsing into a heap of nerves. But before I could even exhale fully, before I could taste the first hint of freedom, a figure darted across the courtyard. My heart froze when I recognised him.“E..... Elena!” Jasper’s voice sliced through the air.I stiffened, my chest locking. His footsteps pounded closer, echoing off the pavement until he was standing right in front of us. He didn’t hesitate, his hand shot out and yanked me away from Lucian’s hold with a f

  • THE WOMAN THEY COULDN’T BREAK   Chapter 97

Chapter 97Lucian’s jaw tightened. He stepped forward, his voice ringing clear. “Because she is my friend and did you all see any evidence that proves she is what they accused her of? Now, you all should listen to me very well, I will not allow you to smear her name for another second. Do you want proof? I will give you proof.”Another reporter raised a hand. “What kind of proof?”Lucian turned slowly, gesturing at the leader of the terrorists. “You will hear it from the very man who accused her.”Gasps filled the room. The leader, bruised and broken, stepped toward the cameras. His voice trembled but carried enough weight to make every microphone stretch closer.“Elena Rivers is innocent,” he said, his eyes darting toward me. “We… We blamed her because we were told to. A stranger contacted us. We never saw his face. Only a phone call. He promised us Rashid’s release if we gave Elena’s name. So we obeyed, but she is not our boss. She has never been with us. She knows nothing of our ca

  • THE WOMAN THEY COULDN’T BREAK   Chapter 96

Chapter 96I nodded numbly, my throat too tight to speak. He faced the terrorists once more, his jaw clenched. “If you confess right now that Elena has nothing to do with your crimes, I will have your brother released.”The leader’s eyes narrowed, his lip split and bleeding. “We don't believe you. We need to see him first,” he spat. “We need proof. Show us our brother.”Lucian’s gaze hardened, but he didn’t hesitate. He turned to the inspector. “What’s his name?”The inspector, still trembling, mumbled the name and prisoner number. Lucian pulled his phone from his pocket and dialled a number I didn’t recognise. My heart pounded as I listened. The entire room watched him, breathless.“Yes, put me through to the head prison immediately,” Lucian ordered. His voice cut like a blade, sharp and commanding, impossible to disobey. There was a pause, then he said, “Warden, this is Lucian Evans. I need a secure call patched to cell block C, inmate [he repeated the number]. Now.”Murmurs rippled

  • THE WOMAN THEY COULDN’T BREAK   Chapter 95

Chapter 95“Elena,” he said, his voice softer now, but no less commanding. He crouched slightly, his eyes meeting mine. “Are you okay?”For a moment, my throat locked. The chaos of the past hours swirled inside me, all the accusations, the insults, the fear and here was Lucian Evans, my unexpected ally again. I nodded weakly, though my hands trembled.Lucian stood, straightened, and barked to the officers, “Remove the handcuffs. Now.”The inspector blinked, panic flashing across his face. “Sir, with due respect, she……..”“NOW!” Lucian roared, his voice reverberating against the walls. The silence that followed was suffocating. The officers scrambled, fumbling for the keys, unlocking my wrists. The cuffs fell away with a clatter that echoed like freedom. Before I could even process it, Lucian reached forward and pulled me into a hug.I froze. The warmth of his embrace startled me. For a second, my body stiffened. Lucian was my friend, even though I never thought about him since that da
