Michael already left, leaving me alone here on the bench.

How dare he offer me to be their water boy? And does he think he will make me accept that offer? I have been avoiding those people all my life, and being part of their team, even as a water boy, is a nightmare!

No one can ever make me say yes to be their errand boy.

No one.

“And you said no?”

I was shocked to my core when I heard a voice near me. I rolled my eyes when I saw who that person is. Nathan.

He was leaning against the rusted metal frame of the bleachers, his arms crossed casually over his chest, a wicked, entertained smirk plastered across his face. He had been lurking in the shadows of the storage shed the entire time, watching the whole exchange. He spun his phone between his fingers, the sleek glass catching the dying orange light of the sunset.

"I think the captain is right," Nathan chuckled, taking a slow, deliberate step toward me. His heavy sneakers crunched against the dry dirt, every step echoing the suffocating authority he thought he held over my life. "It is good to have you in our team, as a waterboy."

My hands locked into tight fists deep inside my hoodie pockets, my knuckles turning stark white. I glared at him, forcing my voice to stay cold, sharp, and laced with absolute disgust. "No. I am not going to be part of your team, nor anyone's team."

Nathan let out a low, mocking scoff as he stopped right in front of the bench. The smirk on his face didn't fade; it only grew darker, more deliberate, like a predator enjoying a cornered prey.

"I think you'll say yes to me," Nathan said smoothly, tilting his head with a fake, sickening softness.

I met his gaze head-on, refusing to shrink back or give him the satisfaction of seeing me flinch. "I said no to your captain, so how could a person like you change my mind?"

Nathan's amused expression instantly vanished, replaced by a cold, sharp glare that made the air between us turn to ice. He raised his right hand, holding his phone just inches from my face. With a deliberate, slow tap of his thumb, the screen lit up, illuminating the dark evening with the paused thumbnail of the exact video that had been keeping me awake for months.

The sight of it made my heart stop completely.

"Because Michael doesn't have this," Nathan whispered, his voice dropping into a low, venomous rasp that made my skin crawl. "He offered you a choice, Niel. I’m not giving you one. You’re going to take that job, you’re going to fetch our water, and you’re going to be right where I can see you every single day."

My stomach dropped into a sickening, icy pit. The breath caught in my throat, choking me, while my pulse hammered so hard in my ears it sounded like deafening thunder.

"If you disobey me," Nathan leaned in even closer, the smell of his cologne suffocating me as his dark eyes locked onto mine, "this video goes live on the school forum, the sports board, and every admissions office on your list before first period tomorrow. You won't just be ruined at Fiat Locke. You'll be done everywhere."

My jaw set so hard the muscles in my cheek twitched, my fingernails biting deep into my palms until it throbbed with sharp pain. Everything inside me raged. I wanted to tear that phone out of his hand, smash it against the concrete, and slam my fist straight into his smirk. But I stayed completely frozen, paralyzed under the crushing weight of his blackmail.

Nathan tapped the screen dark, slipping the phone casually back into his pocket with a satisfied, triumphant grin. He reached out, patting my shoulder with two heavy, mocking thuds that felt like lead weights.

"Think about it, freak," Nathan scoffed, turning on his heel. "I'll be waiting for your answer at practice on Friday."

He strolled away toward the parking lot, the sound of his arrogant laughter slowly fading into the quiet evening air until the field was completely silent.

Once again, I was left alone on the empty field under the darkening sky.

The wind picked up, rustling the dry grass around my shoes, but I couldn't move. I stood there frozen by the wooden bench, my entire body trembling with a violent mix of blinding rage and suffocating, helpless fear. His words lingered in the air around me, heavy and toxic, echoing over and over in the quiet space of my head.

I hadn't given Nathan an answer. I hadn't said a single word as he walked away into the shadows. But deep down, as I stared at the empty path leading out of the school gates, the brutal reality settled in my bones. If I disobeyed him, if I tried to run or pretend this wasn't happening, he would push that button without hesitation.

There was no escape. No matter how much I hated it, I was being forced straight into the lion's den.

I walked through our front door with the same miserable loop playing in my head: Do I take Michael's deal and walk straight back into a lion den of bullies just to keep my secret safe? Or do I try to save whatever tiny shred of dignity I have left and let Nathan leak the video to the whole school? It was a stupid choice. It should have been easy. Walk away, keep your peace. But instead I was standing in the hallway, paralyzed by the realization that I was trapped between acting like a complete puppet or letting my entire life blow up."Hey, you are finally home. Did you eat yet?"I stopped at the edge of the kitchen, blinking against the sudden brightness. Hudson was sitting alone at the marble counter, presiding over a mountain of food. Platters of steak, roasted potatoes, and takeout boxes covered every square inch of the surface. The rich smell of grilled meat and butter hit my nose, but it only made my stomach twist in knots. Was he planning to feed an entire hockey team by himself

The Pathfit class ended and everyone already left. Since this is our last subject everyone already went home while me, I was left behind because I am packing up my things so I can go home too. I zipped my backpack shut, slinging it over one shoulder as the silence of the field settled around me. The sun was starting to dip lower, casting long, orange shadows across the empty bleachers. Until I felt a presence behind my back. My posture went rigid instantly. My grip tightened on the strap of my bag, a familiar, bitter tension coiling deep in my gut. Even without turning around to check who that person might be, I already know who’s presence it is. “What do you want, Nathan?” I turned my back only to be surprised it wasn’t Nathan at all. It is Michael. He was still wearing his sweaty practice jersey, holding his dark duffel bag over his shoulder. His dark hair was damp, sticking slightly to his forehead, and those cold, sharp eyes were fixed entirely on me. “Sorry, I thought you

It’s our last subject today, and it is the one I hate. Pathfit class.I don’t even know why I still have this class in my fourth year. It’s not like I am going to use this for my business career in the future. The sharp blast of Mr. Torres’s whistle cut through the hot afternoon air. "Five laps around the track! Let's go!"I didn't rush. I set my foot on the warm orange track and started running in a steady, comfortable pace. Running like this was easy for my body, like something I had done thousands of times before, but I kept my pace slow on purpose. I hid my good footwork and stayed right in the middle of the crowd. I just needed to look like everyone else so I could get this useless requirement over with.I don’t wanna be someone who I used to be before. When I crossed the finish line on my fifth lap, I wasn't even tired. I walked over to the wooden bleachers, took a small drink from my water bottle, and sat down on the bottom bench. The heavy sound of sports shoes hit the gravel

I did not sleep at all that night.Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Nathan's phone screen glowing in the dark, or Owen laughing with those guys from Fiat's Eagle Locke. I kept rolling over in bed, staring at the ceiling, feeling stupid for ever dropping my guard under that old tree.By the time morning came, my head was throbbing, and my eyes felt heavy and dry.I got to school early, walking with my head down, avoiding every single person in the hallway. I skipped going anywhere near the field during the morning break. I just hid in the library, sitting at a corner table behind a row of tall bookshelves, waiting for the hours to pass. When the noon bell finally chimed for lunch, my stomach twisted into a tight knot.I knew I shouldn't go back to the oak tree. It wasn't my safe spot anymore. But the cafeteria was packed with students, and the hallways were loud and suffocating. I couldn't breathe inside the building. So, holding my paper bag lunch tightly in my fist, I slipped throu

  • Heat and Cold   Chapter 7

The loud, shrill ring of the afternoon bell shattered the quiet peace of the field. My body flinched on instinct. The sudden noise signaled that lunch was over and thirty minutes of peace had just run out. The tight, familiar anxiety instantly crept back into my chest, reminding me that I had to go back inside that big stone building and pretend to be invisible for four more hours."Guess that is our cue," Owen said from the other side of the tree. I heard the rustle of his jacket as he stood up, his heavy sneakers brushing against the dry grass.I let out a slow breath, gathering my empty wrapper and shoving it back into my paper bag. I pushed myself up against the rough trunk, my knees feeling a little stiff from sitting on the cool ground. For a second, I hesitated. Part of me wanted to just turn around and walk away without looking back, keeping Owen as a nameless, faceless voice on the other side of a tree trunk. It felt safer that way. If I did not get close to people, people co
