CHAPTER TWENTY- NINE

Xavier never looked at me once. The only time he did was when I entered the dining room, and his expression was one of clear displeasure. His eyes flashed with anger, though I couldn't fathom why. I felt a knot tighten in my stomach, wondering what I had done to provoke such a reaction.

“Hey, you sit there and I’ll sit here,” said a girl who looked about my age. She slipped into the seat beside me with a casual ease that put me slightly at ease.

“Hi, I’m Meredith. I didn’t get the chance to meet you yesterday because I had class,” she explained, her tone bright and friendly. Her presence was a welcome distraction from the tension radiating from Xavier.

“I guess you are the famous mate of my cousin,” she said, extending a hand in a gesture of friendship. I shook her hand, grateful for the small connection in this otherwise isolating environment.

“Yes, that’s me,” I replied, managing a smile. Meredith’s friendliness was a stark contrast to the coldness I felt from Xavier.
