Chapter Fourty-four

I'm waiting for Eugene to finish the phone call from Anica's husband, Deon. When Eugene sat down in the bed and glanced at me, I bit my lower lip nervously. I immediately asked when he finally ended the call.

"W-what did he say? How is Anica?" my voice shakes with fear.

"Deon is still unsure of Anica's condition because she is still in the emergency room," he explained.

My shoulder drops as I wipe away my tears. Why is it always like this? We're always having problems, and someone close to me is always getting hurt; it's never-ending, and I'm sick of it. If I am happy for a short period of time, there is always a problem that will take those happy memories away from me.

Eugene's phone rang for the second time, which startled both of us. He let me see who was on the other end of the line before answering.

"Yes, hello?" he answered the phone as I stared at him blankly.

His expression was solemn as he listened to what was being said on the other line.
