Aria's POV

I stared at him.

One month. Thirty days in this horrible house surrounded by people who either wanted to kill me or wanted me to be a woman who might not even exist.

"One month?" I repeated, my voice hollow. "You expect me to gamble one month of my life on your obsession?"

"It’s not a gamble, Aria. It's a test." Alexander said, his eyes never leaving mine. "If you are so certain you are Aria Bennett, then thirty days is a small price to pay for your absolute freedom. I will provide

Aria's POV Mila stood up, standing face-to-face with me.“Aria, please, just admit you are joking about this.”“Mila, I’m so sorry for dragging you into this mess,” I said, reaching for her hands. “If you want to go back now, I’ll find a way to get you on a plane. I feel so guilty that you're stuck here because of me. I can handle this alone.”“No, Aria", her voice softened as she squeezed my hands back. “When I said I’m not leaving your side, I meant it. We’re in this together. But what changed your mind? You were so desperate to leave this country.”“I have to prove to them that I’m not Isabella, especially to Alexander.” I sighed, “We made a deal. If I stay for a month and it’s proven that I’m not her, he will let us go. He’ll even escort us to the airport himself.” For the first time in days, I felt a spark of hope. It was a clear path to freedom.Mila didn't look as happy as I felt. She bit her lip, looking at me. “I don't know, Aria... but what if Mr Sterling tries to trick yo

  • Her Face, My Wife's Shadow    Chapter 18: The Kindness, I Don't Trust

Aria's POV I glanced between Pearl and Stella, searching for a hint of malice I had seen in Veronica’s eyes. If Alexander’s mother hated me because she believed I had killed her son, shouldn't these two girls hate me too?I was supposed to be the woman who nearly destroyed their family, yet they were looking at me with nothing but warmth. It didn't fit.I shut the door behind me a little harder.“Where is Mila’s room?” My voice came out flat. She didn't flinch. Instead, she simply lifted her finger, pointing down the corridor. I walked past them without looking back, waiting for a cold silence, instead I heard giggles and a hurried scurry of footsteps trailing after me.“Isabella, how did you survive?”Pearl skipped a little to walk beside me, her eyes shining with curiosity.I pressed my lips together.Isabella again?“Yes,” Stella chimed in from my other side. “Those years must have been horrible for you. We’re so sorry... we truly thought you were dead. If we had known, we would

"If you are so certain you are Aria Bennett, then thirty days is a small price to pay for your absolute freedom. I will provide the papers, signed and notarized. You stay, you engage with this family, and if at the end of the month the truth hasn't surfaced... I will personally escort you to the airport and never look for you again."I hesitated, my heart hammering against my ribs. The thought of staying in this house, especially near that little boy, terrified me. But the thought of being hunted for the rest of my life by Alexander Sterling was even worse. This was a deal with the devil, but it was the only exit strateg

  • Her Face, My Wife's Shadow    Chapter 16: He Is Your Son

Aria's POV Alexander didn't flinch under his son’s gaze. Instead, he stepped forward, his shoes echoing on the polished marble. He placed a hand on the boy’s head, a gesture that was surprisingly tender yet possessed an underlying sense of ownership."No one is going to bully her, Leo," Alexander said softly. "I’ve brought her home. That is the end of the discussion."The boy, Leo, didn't look convinced. He finally let go of his grandfather’s trousers and took a single step toward me. Every eye in the room followed his movement. My knees felt weak, my hands slick with cold sweat. I wanted to run, to tell them all that this was a mistake, but my throat felt like it had been sewn shut.Leo stopped a few feet away from me. He tilted his head, searching my face with a clinical intensity. He wasn't looking for a hug; he was looking for the soul of his mother."Your eyes are different," Leo whispered. "They’re sadder than the ones in the

Aria's POV Alexander turned his head slowly, his gaze dropping to the glowing screen of his phone. His jaw was so tight I could see the muscles leaping in his neck, a physical fury he was struggling to contain."They will face the consequences for helping you escape," his voice was flat, vibrating with a terrifying coldness. "I do not pay people to facilitate my wife's disappearance. They betrayed their duty to me. They’ll be lucky if they ever practice medicine again."The air in the car turned frigid. A sudden surge of protectiveness bypassed my fear, a heat flaring up from my core. I leaned toward him, my eyes narrowing into dangerous slits."Don't you dare," I whispered, my voice trembling with conviction. "If you lay a finger on them or ruin their lives because I forced them to help me, I will hate you for the rest of eternity. I will make sure every look I give you is poisoned. Do you understand me? You will never get a single drop of kindness from me again."For the first time

  • Her Face, My Wife's Shadow    Chapter 14: The Name I Shouldn't Know

Aria's POV The name felt like a cold sound sinking into the pit of my stomach. “The Boss.” I remembered the warning Alexander had told me in my room, his voice heavy with a terror I hadn't understood until now: “Stay inside, Aria. The Boss is a dangerous man. You wouldn't want to meet him twice.”"Who are you?" I whispered, my fingers digging into Mila’s hand. She was shivering so violently behind me that the entire seat seemed to vibrate. The tall man in the suit didn't flinch at the sight of the dead driver or the smell of iron and gunpowder filling the car. He looked at me with calm, patience. "Aria, why don't you come out first? Then we can start with the introductions.""Answer me first," I demanded, trying to find a spine of steel amidst my own fear. "How do you know my real name? Everyone in this country calls me Isabella. I’m guessing those men who attacked us the day I arrived... they were yours, weren't they?"A slow, chilling smile spread across the man’s face. "You're sma
